How does the contents page follow general and layout conventions?
The contents page maintains brand identity of the ‘Vibe’ magazine and establishes it style: Urban, stylish and professional, however it does
follow conventions within music magazines, for example.it includes its contents with its page numbers on the side which allows to audience to
go straight to that page. It also features a main image of the artist who features in the magazine. The contents page is also split into sections
making the layout clear and readable, e.g.‘THE NEW SCHOOL’ and for each article, a brief description of the content of the article and page
number are provided which is common in music magazines. The colours used: ‘Black and silver’ reflect the type of magazine which is stylish
and sophisticated and also reflects the readership and the genre being promoted. In this case, RAP. The image of the artist is also separate from
the contents allowing the audience to see that the image is the main focus.
The Analysis
The background is continued from the front cover as the black, grey and white colour schemes merges into one. The use of this allows the
magazine to maintain its identity and also allows to audience to identify a theme within the magazine which is effective as it will help the
magazine sell. The use of little props or other images allows the central focus to be that of the image and contents list. This engages the audience
into further purchasing the magazine as their only focus is the main image which is attractive and appealing.
The fact that the background consists of three colours shows that there is more than one side of Ciara and that she will reveal all inside. These
colours are usual traditional colours and once again reflect the slick style of the magazine as it is professional and classy.
The main image is of Ciara as she poses laying down insilver coloured heels and anude coloured body suit revealing her legs which continues
the mood that the issue will reveal information untold. The fact that she’s laying down shows that she is quite vulnerable. The fact that her hair is
down shows that she is revealing and seductive. The position of Ciara has her main body against the white and light grey section of the
background whichhighlights her and puts her at the attention of the audience. Highlighting Ciara shows the audience the importance of her in
this issue as she is clearly the main selling point of this issue. The fact that Ciara crops up twice in the magazine allows the audience to feel a
personal connection with her as she is repeatedly shown and the audience may also feel that they are getting all the details on her that no one else

2. can making them feel special and want, making them further want to purchase the magazine. She makes eye contact (direct address) with the
audience allowing them to feel important and to let them know that this magazine is aimed at them.
By looking at the front cover and contents page which are both linked in terms of its sexual imagery and dominance, we can tell that this
magazine is aimed at a male audience as Ciara looks seductive and it states on the front cover that : ‘CIARA REVEALS ALL’. The use of
anchorage as Ciara is fully naked clutching a white cloth maintains brand identity and allows the audience to know that she is the main focus of
this magazine. The fact that she is fully naked also attracts male attention and will further make them want to purchase the magazine.
The body suit worn by Ciara is grey fitted with a nude belt shows off her femininity and seductiveness. It is often an image of large writing of
the editor which is in place, however ‘Vibe’ doesn’t enforce this typical feature and so we are feeling ‘Vibe’ doesn’t stick to all conventions of a
music magazine and that it truly is a magazine all about the artists music and they speak for themselves. This allows ‘Vibe’ magazine to stand
out and makes the audience establish that ‘Vibe’ differs to all Rap and R&B magazines and has its own distinctive look to it.
The layout is very basic and allows all the contents features to be clear and visible. The title ‘CONTENTS’ is bold which stands out. As a
conventional feature the audience are made aware of the information found on this page and can navigate through the magazine easily. The
layout of this with the word ‘CONTENTS’ is broken into three lines which adds an edge to the page and is consistent with the sleek style of
‘Vibe’ magazine. Although the layout is very basic, it does attract the audience into further purchasing the magazine as Ciara again looks sexy
and seductive which will draw the audience in,
The contents list is very basic and straight to the point with little use of subheadings the contents are separated into two categories. This makes
the magazine easy to navigate around and avoids any complications when reading the features found in the magazine. The two subheadings are
followed by a small list of to which have page numbers as to which have a small caption of information about the specific article. This gives the
audience a list as to what can be found on that given page and so the use of highlighted key words helps highlight who, what and where certain
parts of the texts can be found. This prevents the audience from having to search around to find the specific parts of information in the magazine.

that the magazine is celebrating her success and achievement. This is further emphasised on the front cover of the magazine.
‘Features and ‘Fashion’ are presented in a bold, fancy font reflecting the fact that they are headings and that the magazine is split into two
sections. The fancy bold, black writing relates to the fact that there is a female on the contents page as the use of handwritten writing reflects
femininity and intimacy. This also stands out from the rest of the text on the contents page as they are stand out less. This allows the audience to
identify that the magazine contains both features and fashion and that there is a diverse range on contents included in the magazine.
The composition is laid out clearly and effectively. Ciara is positioned at the bottom right to centre of the page , dominating the page. The
contents is pushed over to the right hand side of the page allowing the audience to read to contents page last which is very clever of
‘Vibe’ as this is the last thing they read on the page. The ‘V’ for ‘Vibe’ is placed at the top centre of the page in between Ciara’s legs as
she forms a ‘V’ shape which allows its brand identity to be continued and reminds the audience that this is the contents of ‘Vibe’
magazine which induces the audience into purchasing the magazine.
The keywords highlighted in bold is a feature greatly used in magazines because the audience’s eyes will be attracted to the bold text and so they
have an idea as to what and who the articles will be about and so audience’s looking for specific information will avoid them having to read the
whole text which is effective as they will not have to search for any particular text.
