Lesson Three
I.

Analyzethe Learners: I will be teaching a class of twenty-five fifth grade students-twelve girls and thirteen boys, four of whom are African Americans. All students are
between the ages of ten and eleven years old. Overall, I will be incorporating a
variety of teaching strategies to appeal to the various learning styles of my students.

II.

State Objectives: My fifth grade students will research information about important
individuals from the Civil Wardescribing their effect on the war’s outcome by
utilizing online research, QR codes,Twitter, vokis, scripts, and mock interviews/roleplay by the end of the day with 95% accuracy.

III.

Selecting Methods, Material, and Media: To pique the interest of each child, I will
incorporate the following materials throughout the lesson:
Smart Board: I will be using the smart board throughout the lesson to display
my voki, the class WebQuest, and its instructions.
Voki: I will introduce the lesson and assignment with my Abraham Lincoln voki.
QR Code: I will allow the children to use either their smart phones or the class iPads
to scan the code that will direct them to their WebQuest assignment.

Computer Lab: I will reserve the computer lab and iPads for partner research.
Important Civil War LeadersWebQuest: The WebQuest will provide the students
with assignment instructions, kid-friendly websites, videos, blogs, and podcasts that
they can utilize for research regarding their assigned Civil War leaders. This
WebQuest also provides sample interview questions and formats.
Role-play: As one of the activities, students and their partners will be
encouraged to share the information they have gathered by presenting a
mock interview, in which one student will portray his or her assigned Civil
War leader, while the other student acts as the interviewer.
Audacity: The students will create a podcast by recording their mock
interviews.
Twitter: After the lesson, the students will tweet one important fact they
learned about their assigned historic individual.
IV.

Utilize Media and Material: Prior to class, I will preview all materials and electronic
devices that will be incorporated into the lesson. Thus, I will pre-check the smart
board and my voki to make sure that my digital materials are working properly.
Furthermore, I will have all the iPads in a basket that will be located on a table in
front of my desk. Before class begins, I will check that the iPads have all the
necessary apps that will be utilized throughout the lesson. (Such apps would include
the QR scanner and podcasting software.) Also, I will have a list posted on the smart
board to assign students partners and a specific historic individual to research. The
rubric for this assignment will be located on the classroom WebQuest, so that
students will know exactly what is expected of them.

V.

Require Learner Participation: At the beginning of class, I will display the Abraham
Lincoln voki on the smart board to briefly introduce the topic of the lesson as well as
the project the students will be completing. This will inform the students that they
will conduct a mock interview of an important individual from the Civil War. The
students will then be divided up into partners and given the name of an important
individual. After finding their partners, students willbe allowed to use their iPhones
or the classroom iPads to scan the QR code that I will have posted on four different
bulletin boards around the room. These codes will then direct the students to the
class WebQuest, entitled: “Important Civil War Leaders.” Each pair of students will
then follow the instructions provided in the WebQuest, and utilize the listed
websites to uncover information about their assigned individual. Before conducting
any research, each pair of students will make 15 mock interview questions that
would describe the role and impact that their historic figure had on the Civil War.
Once the students have found this information, they will create a Question/Answer
scriptand will then conduct and record their interviews. To do this, one student will
play the role of the historic figure, while the other student acts as the reporter who
records the mock interview. They will then edit their recordings on audacity. Finally,
to briefly reflect on this assignment, the students will tweet one important fact they
have learned about their assigned individual.
VI.

Evaluate and Revise: To evaluate my students and check for comprehension, I will:
Circulate throughout the room asking students questions,
Check for student participation,
Collect each group’s Question/Answer Scripts
Grade their recorded interviews/podcasts. This will be assessed based on the
rubric provided in the WebQuest.

  • 1. Kayla Napier CI 350 Harold Blanco October 4, 2013 Lesson Three I. Analyzethe Learners: I will be teaching a class of twenty-five fifth grade students-twelve girls and thirteen boys, four of whom are African Americans. All students are between the ages of ten and eleven years old. Overall, I will be incorporating a variety of teaching strategies to appeal to the various learning styles of my students. II. State Objectives: My fifth grade students will research information about important individuals from the Civil Wardescribing their effect on the war’s outcome by utilizing online research, QR codes,Twitter, vokis, scripts, and mock interviews/roleplay by the end of the day with 95% accuracy. III. Selecting Methods, Material, and Media: To pique the interest of each child, I will incorporate the following materials throughout the lesson: Smart Board: I will be using the smart board throughout the lesson to display my voki, the class WebQuest, and its instructions. Voki: I will introduce the lesson and assignment with my Abraham Lincoln voki. QR Code: I will allow the children to use either their smart phones or the class iPads to scan the code that will direct them to their WebQuest assignment. Computer Lab: I will reserve the computer lab and iPads for partner research. Important Civil War LeadersWebQuest: The WebQuest will provide the students with assignment instructions, kid-friendly websites, videos, blogs, and podcasts that they can utilize for research regarding their assigned Civil War leaders. This WebQuest also provides sample interview questions and formats.

Role-play: As one of the activities, students and their partners will be encouraged to share the information they have gathered by presenting a mock interview, in which one student will portray his or her assigned Civil War leader, while the other student acts as the interviewer. Audacity: The students will create a podcast by recording their mock interviews. Twitter: After the lesson, the students will tweet one important fact they learned about their assigned historic individual. IV. Utilize Media and Material: Prior to class, I will preview all materials and electronic devices that will be incorporated into the lesson. Thus, I will pre-check the smart board and my voki to make sure that my digital materials are working properly. Furthermore, I will have all the iPads in a basket that will be located on a table in front of my desk. Before class begins, I will check that the iPads have all the necessary apps that will be utilized throughout the lesson. (Such apps would include the QR scanner and podcasting software.) Also, I will have a list posted on the smart board to assign students partners and a specific historic individual to research. The rubric for this assignment will be located on the classroom WebQuest, so that students will know exactly what is expected of them. V. Require Learner Participation: At the beginning of class, I will display the Abraham Lincoln voki on the smart board to briefly introduce the topic of the lesson as well as the project the students will be completing. This will inform the students that they will conduct a mock interview of an important individual from the Civil War. The
  • 3. students will then be divided up into partners and given the name of an important individual. After finding their partners, students willbe allowed to use their iPhones or the classroom iPads to scan the QR code that I will have posted on four different bulletin boards around the room. These codes will then direct the students to the class WebQuest, entitled: “Important Civil War Leaders.” Each pair of students will then follow the instructions provided in the WebQuest, and utilize the listed websites to uncover information about their assigned individual. Before conducting any research, each pair of students will make 15 mock interview questions that would describe the role and impact that their historic figure had on the Civil War. Once the students have found this information, they will create a Question/Answer scriptand will then conduct and record their interviews. To do this, one student will play the role of the historic figure, while the other student acts as the reporter who records the mock interview. They will then edit their recordings on audacity. Finally, to briefly reflect on this assignment, the students will tweet one important fact they have learned about their assigned individual. VI. Evaluate and Revise: To evaluate my students and check for comprehension, I will: Circulate throughout the room asking students questions, Check for student participation, Collect each group’s Question/Answer Scripts Grade their recorded interviews/podcasts. This will be assessed based on the rubric provided in the WebQuest.
