Part of the series on prayer; emphasis is applied to James 5.16. This is a basic PowerPoint regarding James 5.16. More points and words were spoken than contained in the PowerPoint.
In this lesson we start by debunking several prevalent lies about prayer that hinder us from praying as we should. We then move on to study the prayer life of Elijah. Amazingly, even though we learn that he was a man just like us, and thus subject to misplaced passions and a sinful nature, his prayer life was powerful and effective. (James 5:17-18; 1 Kings 19:1-8)
How do we live wisely and in tune with the One who knows the future? From a talk by Russ Fochler at Blazing Fire Church on October 13, 2012. See www.blazingfire.org for the podcast.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

HANUMAN STORIES: TIMELESS TEACHINGS FOR TODAY’S WORLD
Choice
1. The People's Choice
Joshua 24:14-31
We must learn to make
proper choices in life.
2. Joshua 24:14-15
14 "Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in
sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods
which your fathers served on the other side of the
River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! 15 And if it
seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for
yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether
the gods which your fathers served that were on
the other side of the River, or the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me
and my house, we will serve the Lord.
3. A REAL Choice
Israel had several options
− Back to old life, before the flood
− Gods of Ammorites
− Serve Jehovah
We have real choices to make
We are not puppets
Free Moral Agents = Free to choose
4. Joshua 24:22
So Joshua said to the people, "You are
witnesses against yourselves that you have
chosen the Lord for yourselves, to serve
Him." And they said, "We are witnesses!"
You have to think it through
Think of the consequences
Witness against yourself
5. A RESPONSIBLE Choice
Joshua does a double-check
Are you really ready to give up pagan gods
and practices?
Are you fully ready to serve Jehovah and
ONLY serve Him?
6. Joshua 24:23-24
23 "Now therefore," he said, "put away the
foreign gods which are among you, and
incline your heart to the Lord God of
Israel." 24 And the people said to Joshua,
"The Lord our God we will serve, and His
voice we will obey!"
7. A REPENTANT Choice
Before you decide – know the results
Think about the consequences
Are you ready to make that step?
8. Joshua 24:27-28
27 And Joshua said to all the people,
"Behold, this stone shall be a witness to us,
for it has heard all the words of the Lord
which He spoke to us. It shall therefore be
a witness to you, lest you deny your God."
28 So Joshua let the people depart, each
to his own inheritance.
9. A RECORDED Choice
Many make decisions – keep it a secret
− If we fail or change our minds
− No one knows
This choice was public – recorded
Wedding ring is the “rock” of marriage
10. A RECORDED Choice
This is not a movie – happy ending
− Israel does not ride into the sunset
− Fairy tale – live happily ever after
Joshua died
Book of Judges – A cycle of sin
Judges 17:6 In those days there was no
king in Israel; everyone did what was right
in his own eyes.
11. Joshua 24:31
Israel served the Lord all the days of
Joshua, and all the days of the elders who
outlived Joshua, who had known all the
works of the Lord which He had done for
Israel.
How long did their choice last?
One generation!
12. A PERMANENT Choice
Revelation 2:10b Be faithful until death,
and I will give you the crown of life.
Remember the rock as a witness?
Rocks last a long time!
13. We have choices
Work – change jobs?
Family – marry, children?
Location – Where to live, move
Simple – Burger King or Wendy's
14. We have choices
Temptation – Resist the temptations
Temperament – Who makes you mad?
Spiritual – Will we obey God?
− Do I believe in Jesus and want to serve
Him?
− Do I want to obey His commands?
