The document summarizes the story of Obed-Edom, a Gittite who housed the Ark of the Covenant for three months after it was moved from Beth Shemesh. During this time, Obed-Edom and his whole household were greatly blessed by God. Impressed by this, King David had Obed-Edom serve as a gatekeeper, musician, and doorkeeper for the Ark. 12. GIT'-ITS (GITTIM, PLURAL OF GITTIY):
• The inhabitants of Gath.
• They are mentioned along with the inhabitants of the other chief Philistine cities

• Obed-edom, to whom David entrusted the ark when he was frustrated in bringing it
into the city of David, was a Gittite (2 Samuel 6:11; 1 Chronicles 13:13). The Gittites
seem to have been remarkable for their great stature (2 Samuel 21:19; 1 Chronicles
20:5).
13. DISAGREEMENTS ABOUT OBED-EDOM
• Most scholars agree that in the name "Obed-Edom the Gittite," (as
he is called in 2 Samuel 6 and 1 Chronicles 13) the term "Gittite"
refers originally to a Philistine (and therefore a non-Israelite
man). However, in Chronicles "Obed-Edom is assigned a Levitical
pedigree," that is, is described as a Levite, an Israelite member of
the tribe entrusted with holy responsibilities. This description as a
Levite is "usually regarded as the Chronicler's own
interpretation." The Chronicler has altered the original description
of a Philistine Obed-Edom in order to make the character a Levite.
