Ongoing conflicts in places like the Middle East and Africa have hindered progress, as have disagreements between world powers. To further reduce child mortality rates, the author proposes raising community awareness, engaging local governments, and using social media to communicate the issue and call for donations to support solutions.

There are over 1.2 billion young people aged 15-24 globally, and volunteerism is an important mechanism for them to drive positive social change. Young people contribute over $35 billion annually through volunteer work and volunteering leads to higher employment rates. The UN established the UN Volunteers program in 1970 to promote volunteerism worldwide and advance the role of youth in development. Through this program, thousands of young people will support UN efforts and help realize their potential through volunteer work.

Child Helpline International is a global network of nearly 200 child helplines in over 170 countries. The organization held its 7th annual conference where it was acknowledged that while the world faces many problems, children were not responsible for creating them. The conference focused on empowering youth through technology and how helplines can support young people. Data from helplines shows that the top reasons youth seek help are abuse, violence, and psycho-social issues like anxiety and self-harm. However, many calls go unanswered due to lack of resources. To address this, Child Helpline International launched a "Free Our Voices" campaign to raise awareness and funds to ensure all youth have access to support.

Civil society in Asia Pacific steps up efforts to accelerate MDGs achievement
JAKARTA, INDONESIA – More than 30 representatives from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from ten countries in Asia and the Pacific are gathering today and tomorrow at the Civil Society Consultation on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Review to step up efforts for the acceleration of MDGs achievements in the remaining five years to the 2015 deadline.
The CSO Consultation, organized by the UN Millennium Campaign in partnership with ActionAid and Global Call for Action against Poverty (GCAP), serves as a consultative forum prior to the Special Ministerial Meeting for MDGs Review in Asia and the Pacific on August 3-4, the outcome of which will be presented and discussed at the MDG Review Summit to be held in New York on 20-22 September 2010.
“This CSO review of the MDGs marks the continuation of the first of such meeting organized by Erna Witoelar, former Special Ambassador to the MDGs for Asia and the Pacific in 2005,” says Mr. Minar Pimple, Regional Director, United Nations Millennium Campaign Asia and the Pacific Regional Office. “It is one of a few meetings of this nature happening in this part of the world, allowing the CSOs’ concerted voices and demands heard in the ministerial process as they play a contributory role in achieving the MDGs,” he continues.
“The most important objective of today’s CSO meeting is to create a concrete consensus among all the stakeholders in our regional effort to realize the Goal 1 of the MDGs on hunger and poverty,” says Mr. Saroj Dash, Thematic and Governance Manager, ActionAid.
The Review was inaugurated by Rezlan Ishar Jenie, Director General of Multilateral Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indonesia. Speaking at the opening of the consultation, Mr. Rezlan says, “Achieving the MDGs is so imperative that it could mean the difference between life and death of millions of people in our region. This important meeting will contribute substantively to the Special Ministerial Meeting MDGs Review in Asia and the Pacific: Run-up to 2015 that my Government will host on August 3-4.”
He emphasized that failure to achieve the MDGs by 2015 would mean an additional 128 million people living in poverty on top of the 420 million people who would remain trapped in extreme poverty. One million children under the age of five would die and an additional 31 million children would suffer from hunger; and 7 million more children would drop out of school. “Hence, our dialogue today becomes even more important than ever; not just for civil society but also for governments,” he urges.
Asia-Pacific Region had made several progress in some of the Goals, including reducing gender disparities in education; and halving the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water. However, several pressing challenges remain against the backdrop of the global energy, food and economic crises. Key pressing challenges include hunger and child and maternal mortality. South Asia region alone has the highest number of hungry people in the world, which significantly impacts economic growth of the region; child and maternal mortality remains one of the highest in the world; and within-country disparities between urban and rural areas.
“This CSO Consultation is very important and significant in consolidating GCAP efforts to achieve the MDGs and in helping us mobilize support for the Stand Up and Take Action in September, the biggest global MDG mobilization campaign in the recorded history, as well as providing inputs in shaping up our strategy to achieve the MDGs in our region in the remaining five years,” says Nur Amalia of GCAP.

- 2. UN Millennial development goal (Child Mortality) • In the modern world, child mortality is increasing everyday and it is a big deal which the United Nations is trying to reduce. • Children are important in the community and the world at large. They symbolize hope for a brighter future. • The loss of an infant, or adolescent aged child is devastating bearing in mind that they have lost a chance to make the world a better place for the children to come. • This pains me because, some of the factors that lead to these increased deaths are matters that we can be able to solve as a community. • The UN’s project of reducing child mortality has made significant progress over the last couple of years from 1990 to date. With reduced cases from 12.7 million to recent cases of 2020 revealing 7.2 million children have died. • Despite the noticeable slight progress of reducing the child mortality rate, the project still has not achieved maximum positive impact.
- 3. Child Mortality Some of the main challenges hindering the U.N’s success in reducing the child deaths include Continuous rebelling conflicts in countries like in Middle East and the African continent. Conflicts between world Super Powers which affects the community of practice from the U.N. donors and supporters.
- 4. Child Mortality In order to foster a sustainable global progress, accelerating the process of reducing child deaths is a significant start. Engaging my community to raise awareness of the impact and causes of child mortality in the world will benefit to accelerate the decline of this rates. Calling for local government’s intervention in the matter and enhancing community of practice to help spread the word and establish solutions to this problem. My greatest contribution will be to advocate for a community of practice among corporations, churches, local and national government, individuals, communities, , schools etc. A social media platform such as Facebook can be used to create a social community that can help to communicate the problem of child mortality and also to call for donations around the world in order to form strong grounds in the process of improving the situation.
