According to Greek legend, magnetism was first discovered by a shepherd named Megnes in Megnesia, Greece. His iron stick and nails had become attracted to a magnetic rock, which was named magnetite after the shepherd or country. Magnets have two poles, a north pole and a south pole, which always exist in pairs and cannot be separated. A compass uses a magnetic needle that aligns in the north-south direction, with its red end pointing north.

Natural magnetism has been known for thousands of years and refers to objects that exhibit permanent magnetic properties. Most rocks containing iron oxide, called lodestone, were naturally magnetic. Permanent magnets are usually made of steel which better locks the magnetic domains into alignment compared to iron. The magnetic field of a bar magnet is represented by lines of force and is strongest at the poles where the lines are closest together. Heating a magnet above its Curie point causes it to lose its magnetic properties as the domains become randomly aligned.

- 4. DISCOVERY OF MAGNET According to Greek legend, magnetism was first discovered by a shepherd named Megnes, who lived in Megnesia, Greece. The iron in his stick and nails had become attracted to the magnetic rock. The stone was named as magnetite, after the name of the shepherd or the country it was found in.
- 5. PROPERTIES OF MAGNET If a magnet is suspended freely by a thread, it aligns itself in the north-south direction. Magnet attract objects made of iron, nickel and cobalt. Magnet have two poles, the north pole (N) and the south pole (S). Pole always exist in pair, they cannot be separated
- 6. A compass has a magnetic needle that can rotate freely. When a compass is kept at a place, the magnetic needle aligns in north-south direction. Red arrow of the compass needle is termed as north pole and the other end as south pole. COMPASS
- 7. 1. Take an Iron bar and a Magnet bar. 2. Place one of the magnet’s pole at the edge of the iron bar. 3. Slide the magnet towards the other edge of the iron bar without lifting the magnet. 4. Lift the magnet now and place at the initial position again with same pole touching iron bar. 5. Repeat this process 30-40 times or more till the iron bar becomes magnetized. HOW TO MAKE A MAGNET?
