CHEMISTRY OF NATURAL
PRODUCTS
NNT
INRTODUCTION
• Natural products are produced from plants, animals,
microbes[Lichen, Fungi etc.].
• All the chemical reactions and chemical processes are in
plants, animals, microbes are explained.
KOSSELS said that natural products are mainly produced
by metabolites.
• METABOLITES
• Primary Secondary
• metabolites metabolites
• PRIMARY METBOLITES:- Primary metabolites directly
involves in growth, development of organism. A primary
metabolite is typically present in many organisms or cells.
It is also referred to as a central metabolite.
• EXAMPLE:- Carbohydrates, proteins etc.
SECONDARY METABOLITES:- These metabolites are not
directly involved in growth, development of
organism. absence of secondary metabolites does not
result in immediate death, but rather in long-term
impairment of the organism's survivability.
EXAMPLE:- Alkaloids, Terpenes etc.
DIFFERENTIATION OF NATURAL PRODUCTS
NATURAL PRODUCTS
ENTIRE BODY PART OF ORGANISM EXTRACTION
[PURE COMPOUNDS]
PLANTS LEAF OF PLANT ALKALOIDS,
OR OR STEROIDS
ANIMALS PART OF ANIMAL
Chemistry of natural products mainly describes about
structure and characteristics of that specific natural
product.
• Based on properties natural products are of four types:-
• 1.Biotic materials
• 2.Bio-based materials
• 3.Bodily fluid materials
• 4.Natural materials
BIOTIC MATERIALS
• Biotic material or biological
derived material is any natural material that is originated
from living organisms. Most such materials contain carbon
and are capable of decay.
• EXAMPLES:-Wood, Manure.
BIO-BASED MATERIALS
• A bio-based material is a
material intentionally made from substances derived from
living organisms. These materials are sometimes referred
to as biomaterial.
• EXAMPLES:- Bio plastic, Starch etc.
BODILY FLUID MATERIALS
• Body fluids include blood, lymph,
tissue fluid, milk and saliva. They are produced in
the body .
• EXAMPLES:- Milk [ specifically from animals]
Natural materials
• A natural material is any product
or physical matter that comes from plants, animals, and
also all life on earth.
• EXAMPLES:- Soil, coal.
SYNTHESIS
• Synthesizing process of these was done by chemical
synthesis in two processes:-
1. Semi-synthesis
2. Total synthesis
TURMERIC POWDER
• Turmeric powder is one of the natural product extracted
from plant [ turmeric]
• This grows at temperature maintained between 20 and
30 °C (68 and 86 °F).
• Phytochemical components of turmeric
include dairylheptinoids
COMPONENTS IN TURMERIC POWDER
• 60–70% of carbohydrates,
• 6–13% of water,
• 6–8% of protein,
• 5–10% of fat,
• 3–7% of dietary minerals,
• 3–7% of essential oils,
• 2–7% of dietary fibre,
• 1–6% of curcuminoids.
APPLICATIONS
• Ayurveda,
• Chinese medicine,
• Ethno botany,
• Journal of Natural Products,
• Pharmacognosy,
• Phytotherapy,
• Secondary metabolites
