Character Education
Definition
Character education implements educational approaches such as
“whole child education, service learning, social-emotional learning,
and civic education.”
Characteristics
Character education involves promoting traits such as respect,
trustworthiness, responsibility, listening skills, kindness, and many
others.
Importance
It is important because it helps mold students into responsible,
caring, and contributing citizens.
Role in 21st Learning
Although this is not a new lesson, because of its importance, it is
critical for character education to always be taught. “The current
movement is simply a reminder of education’s long history of
stressing shared values and character.”
WebQuest: WebQuests are very diverse, so it would not be hard
for a teacher to create one for character education. This tool
would be helpful because the teacher can decide which specific
parts of character education he or she would like to cover (i.e.
bullying, trustworthiness, respect, etc).
YouTube: Although videos keep kid’s attention and there are an
abundance on character education, children can create their own
videos on character education or be filmed acting out skits that
promote character education.
Media and Materials: Kids love making and looking at posters. If
they see a familiar poster everyday or get the opportunity to
make one and hang it in the classroom, they will be reminded of
character education.

Digital Imaging: This would go hand in hand with the character
education poster. Students are more likely to remember things
when they do hands on activities and create something. When
students create images, they can showcase whatever they
think good character looks like- which is helpful to how the
teacher teaches character and how other students look at it.
Blogs: Instead of reading blogs, it would helpful for children to
make them and use them as journals. Throughout the year,
students could make note of when they saw positive character,
promotes positive character, or learned something new about
it.

Conclusion
Teaching character education may not always be
easy, but promoting morals and values is
important, especially in younger children.
In 21st century education, this pillar can be taught
with the help of technology in hopes of creating a
bright, successful future for all students.
