Character
education

What is character education?
 Character Education is defined by Wikipedia as “the
teaching of children in a manner that would purportedly help
them develop variously as moral, civic, good, mannered,
behaved, non-bullying, healthy, critical, successful, traditional,
compliant and socially acceptable beings.”
So to put it simply, it’s is teaching your students to be good
human beings. Could there be any more important of a task?
Why is this important?
 This is a good question…but a
better question is how
wouldn’t it be important?
 Yes, teachers have about a
million things to do in the
classroom so what are some
reasons that they should
spend time focusing on
developing their children's’
character…Let’s see!
1. School might be the only place
your kids learn character
education
 Yes, all parents should
teach their children how to
have good character, but
the fact is some don’t.
 And when these kids are
with you for nearly 35 hours
in a week, this is a perfect
time to help develop their
character to benefit your
classroom and to benefit
those kids.
2. Character Education Builds
Relationships and Helps Contribute
to better School Environments
 Discussing and implementing character
education in your classroom can help students
learn to be kind, patient, and caring to their
classmate which, in turn, helps them build
better friendships.
 When students can have these characteristics
and relationships the school environment will
greatly improve as well.
3. It’s not time consuming
(thank God!)
 Implementing character education in
your class doesn’t have to be a big deal,
it can be a simple five-minute lesson on
why saying “Please” and “Thank You” is
important. Or discussing what is means to
care or respect someone.
4. It can help change the
world!!!!!!!!!!!!
 Though this may seem like an overstatement, is it
really? Yes-It is so important that you are
academically teaching your students but when
you teach them character as well you are aiding
the future politicians, teachers, doctors, bankers,
salesmen, and societal workers in general!!!!
 Having children that display this necessary
character will undoubtedly shape the future for
the better!
Sound Important Enough?!
 Yeah I think so, too.
 So make certain that you teach
character education in your classrooms
because you never know how your
students are going to shape the world.
Role of Technology
 Teaching character education doesn’t
have to be technologically based, but it
can be.
 For Example: I made a WebQuest about
anti-bullying for this class.
 But as a teacher you can also make it
more socially interactive as well.
 It’s really up to you, as a teacher, how
you want to include technology in
teaching character education
