                 Chapter 7 - Section One
                 Electoral College- an indirect method of election
                 Similarity: Elector
                 Sentence: The electoral college is made up of electors.

                 Elector- vote for one of the major candidates
                 Similarity: Electoral College
                 Sentence: The electoral college is made up of electors.

                 Chapter 7 - Section Two
                 Executive Order- a rule or command that has the force of law
                 Similarity/Difference: None
                 Sentence: Executive orders cannot be fought because they are the law.

                 Pardon- a declaration of forgiveness and freedom from punishment
                 Similarity: Amnesty
                 Sentence: When amnesty was granted it was a group pardon.

                 Reprieve- an order to delay a personʼs punishment until a higher court can hear the
                 case
                 Similarity/Difference: None
                 Sentence: When people are fighting the system they often call for reprieve.

                 Amnesty- a pardon toward a group of people
                 Similarity: Pardon
                 Sentence: When amnesty was granted it was a group pardon.

                 Chapter 7 - Section Three
                 Foreign Policy- a nationʼs plan for dealing with other nations
                 Similarity: National Security
                 Sentence: Foreign policies take care of how countries interact.

                 National Security- the ability to keep the country safe from attack or harm
                 Similarity: Foreign Policy
                 Sentence: National Security is the focus of keeping the country safe from other
                 countries.

                 Treaty- formal agreements between the governments of two or more countries
                 Similarity: Foreign Policy
                 Sentence: Often countries will create a treaty to maintain the peace.

                 Executive Agreement- an agreement between the president and the leader of another
                 country
                 Similarity: Treaty

Sentence: Executive agreements are very similar to a treaty where the leaders have
                 some sort of agreement.

                 Ambassador- official representative of a countryʼs government
                 Similarity: President
                 Sentence: An ambassador is in charge of relations with other countries.

                 Trade Sanction- efforts to punish another nation by imposing trade barriers
                 Similarity: Embargo
                 Sentence: Sometimes trade sanctions are enforced through embargoes.

                 Embargo- which is an agreement among a group of nations that prohibits them from
                 trading with a target nation
                 Similarity: Trade Sanction
                 Sentence: Sometimes trade sanctions are enforced through embargoes.

                 Chapter 7 - Section Four
                 Cabinet- a group of presidential advisers that includes the heads of the 14 top-level
                 executive departments
                 Similarity: Political Appointee
                 Sentence: The presidents cabinet is made up of 14 advisors.

                 Federal Bureaucracy- agencies and employees of the executive branch
                 Similarity: Executive Branch
                 Sentence: The executive branch is run by the federal bureaucracy.

                 Independent Agency- they are not part of the cabinet
                 Difference: Cabinet
                 Sentence: Independent agencies are not part of the presidentʼs cabinet.

                 Government Corporation- private businesses, except that the government rather than
                 individuals owns and operates them
                 Similarity/Difference: None
                 Sentence: Government corporations are private businesses owned by the government.

                 Political Appointee- people whom the president has chosen because they have proven
                 executive ability or were important supporters of the presidentʼs election campaign
                 Similarity: Cabinet
                 Sentence: Political appointees act as advisors to the president.

                 Civil Service Worker- about 90 percent of all national government employees
                 Similarity: Civil Service System
                 Sentence: The civil service system is made up of civil service workers.

                 Civil Service System- the practice of hiring government workers on the basis of open,
                 competitive examinations and merit

Similarity: The Merit System
                 Sentence: The civil service system basically hires based on merit.

                 Spoils System- government jobs went to people as a reward for their political support
                 Similarity/Difference: None
                 Sentence: The spoil system favors those who have offered political support.

                 Merit System- Government officials hire new workers from lists of people who have
                 passed the tests or otherwise met civil service standards.
                 Similarity: Civil service system
                 Sentence: Many government officials are hired based off of the merit system.

Civil Service Worker- about 90 percent of all national government employees Similarity: Civil Service System Sentence: The civil service system is made up of civil service workers. Spoils System- government jobs went to people as a reward for their political support Similarity/Difference: None Sentence: The spoil system favors those who have offered political support. Merit System- Government officials hire new workers from lists of people who have passed the tests or otherwise met civil service standards.
