Federal System- Divides powers of the government

Sentence: The federal system keeps our government from getting too powerful in a
single section.

Preamble- Introduction to the Constitution
Similarity: Preface
Sentence: The preamble is like the preface of a book.
Popular Sovereignty- People are the source of power in the government
Similarity: Majority rules
Sentence: Popular sovereignty is what gives the people a say in the country.
Separation of Powers- Divides the power of government into Judicial, Executive, and
Legislative branches
Similarity: Checks and Balances
Sentence: Separation of powers breaks the government into three categories.
Checks and Balances- Each branch limits the powers of the others
Similarity: Separation of Powers
Sentence: Checks and Balances ensure no branch becomes more powerful than the
others.
Amend- Change in the constitution
Similarity/Difference: None
Sentence: Amends modify the constitution to improve it.
Chapter 12 - Section Three
Suffrage- Right to vote
Similarity: Constitutional Rights
Sentence: The Womenʼs Suffrage movement was a monumental part in gaining
womenʼs rights.
Segregation- Separation

Sentence: Segregation in America typically referred to the separation of whites and
blacks.
Chapter 12 - Section Four
Civil Rights- Rights of the citizens
Similarity/Difference: None
Sentence: All American
Boycotts- Refusing to give business to a company
Similarity/Difference: None
Sentence: Sam was boycotting Belk because Belkʼs advertisements offended him.
