About the Internet - Computer were able to network in the early 1960's -It evolved from a government-funded project called ARPANET (Advanced research projects agency network. -The interent was thought of during the Cold War, when they needed something effecient enough to stay strong during an attack. -By 1997, almost everyone in the U.S had access to the internet. -The first website that appeared on the web in December of 1990.

3. Ways of Communicating E-mail -Becoming the top communicator in the 21st century. -They save money, they are efficient, and they are quick. Web-based email can be accessed from any computer but client-based email can only be accessed from where you are stalled. Instant Messaging -Allow you to communicate in real time with others online . -It is used for casual conversation but also for business use, - There is a buddy list that will store all of your contacts for reusing the instant messenger/ Group Communication - Some examples of ways to chat with groups are through chat rooms, newsgroups, and listservers. -They could be dangerous since users can hide behind usernames. -Rules in chat rooms may inclue no swearing, don't be prejudice, introducing yourself as you enter.

Wikis -like a website, but allows users to change, remove, and edit the content. -People argue that the content is always true because it can be changed by anyone. Podcasts and Webcasts -A podcast is a clip of audio or video content that is broadcast over the internet using compressed audio and video files. -A webcast is the broadcast of audio or video content over the internet. -The difference is that podcasts are prerecorded but webcasts are live and a one time event. Social Networking -People use the internet to communicate and share info among.

Web Entertainment Multimedia and Beyond -Multimedi is anything that involves oen or more forms of media in addition to text. -The most basic forms are drawings, charts, and photos. -Streaming audio continuously feeds an audio file to your browser to avoid waiting. -Streaming video continuously feeds a video file to your browser to avoid waiting. -These 2 things bring popularity to gaming online. -Muliplayer online gaming is when players occur among many other gamers over the internet.

6. Conducting Business Over the Internet -E-commerce, or electronic commerce, is the process of conducting business online. Types of e-commerces -Click -and-brick businesses are a type of e-commerce business that provide a variety of services on their site. -Business-to-business consists of businesses buying and selling goods and services to other businesses. -Consumer-to-consumer consists of consumers selling to each other through online auction and exchange.

7. Accessing the Web -A web browser is a software installed that allows you to locate, view, and navigate the web. Common Browsers -Windows explorer (most common of all and has been around since 1999) -Firefox (Popular browser from mozilla and captures about 21.5% of the U.S browser market) -Safari (Browser created by apple, it has about an 8% use by americans) -Google chrome (Newest browser distributed by Google, includes thumbnail access to your most recently visited sites from your home page)

Getting Around the Web URL's -A web address that help identify the web document for which it stands. -The hypertext transfer protocol allows files to be transferred from a computer that hosts the web site you are requesting. -The file transfer protocol is used to upload and download files from one computer to another. Hyperlinks and Beyond -A hyperlink is a specially coded element that allows you to jump from one location to another within the same web site. -To retrace your steps, some sites provide a breadcrumb list- a lis t of pages within a web site you've visited. Favorites, Live Bookmarks, and Tagging -If you want to save a page without having to retype the address everytime, use the browser's favorites or bookmark the page. -These features leaves a marker on the page's URL to make things easier for the next time.

Searching the Web  - A search engine is a set of programs that searched the web for keywords that you are looking for. -Search engines include; a spider (constantly collects data on the web), an indexer program (organizes the data into a large database), and the search engine software (searches the indexed data) Connecting to the Internet -Broadband refers to a type of connection that offers a faster means to connect to the internet. -Broadband would mroe likely be chosen because it has a much faster connection than dial-up. -A cable internet connection uses the same coaxial cable used by cable TV, but cable internet is separate from cable TV.

The Future of the Internet -The future internet will be more accessible and we will become more dependent on it. -Two major projects that the US is working on are the large scale networking (LSN) program and Internet2. -The LSN program aims to fund the research and development of cutting-edge networking and wireless technologies and increase the speed of networks. The Internet2 is a research and development consortium of more than two hundred universities that seek to expand the possibilities of the internet by developing new internet technologies. -We can ecpect to use the internet to assist us with many day-to-day tasks that we now do manually.
