Chapter 3: Evidence Based Practice
What is Evidence Based Practice?
 Design can be formed on fads, opinions, politics, or ideology.
 Instructional techniques should be based on effective research findings.
 Use research based knowledge as a guide, not as a means of telling you what to do
What are the three approaches to research
on instructional effectiveness?
 Identifying methods that improve learning
 Three ways to research instructional effectiveness:
 What works? Will the instructional method being used cause learning.
 When does it work? Finding which methods works best for the learner
 How does it work? Learning process that determine the effectiveness of instructional method
What makes a research method useful?
 Only focusing on one research method is not helpful.
 It is noted multiple research methods can be helpful because different methods address different
questions
 Using the appropriate method for the research question; the method must fit the question.
What to look for in Experimental
Comparisons?
 Look into the following for Experimental Comparisons:
 1. Experimental control
 2. Random assignment
 3. Appropriate measures
Why an experiment may show no
instructional effect?
The remaining unknown about Evidence
Based practice.
 There is still a need of a larger amount of research evidence that includes each of the major
instructional methods.
