The IPO Model of Evaluation (Input-Process-Output)Janilo Sarmiento
The first IPO model is calculating the commission earned from two states' sales based on a commission rate. It takes in the sales amounts for each state and the commission rate as input. It then calculates the total sales by adding the two states' sales together, and calculates the commission by multiplying the total sales by the commission rate. It outputs the total commission.
The second IPO model is calculating the squared value of a number. It takes a single original number as input. It first checks if the number is less than or equal to zero, and if so displays an error message. If the number is greater than zero, it calculates the squared value by multiplying the original number by itself. It then outputs the squared value.

Building a User-Centric Web-Based Library ServiceMichael Pawlus
This short presentation highlights some recent and emerging technology that can be used to augment a library's web-based service and provide a higher level of user interaction as well as resource discovery and access.
e-Governance is the ICT-enabled route to achieving good governance.
An e-library is a library in which collections are stored in digital formats (as opposed to print, microform, or other media) and accessible by computers. The digital content may be stored locally, or accessed remotely via computer networks.
As a part of my regular academic activities under the course “Globalization and Governance (PA-322)”, I was assigned to plan for making department’s seminar an e-library .
This document contains an e-Library Manifesto which introduces the relevant ‘systems’. It describes the main concepts characterising these systems, i.e., content, user, functionality, quality, policy and architecture. It also describes the reference frameworks needed to clarify the e-Library Reference Architecture.
This e-library will meet the needs and passions of teachers and students and the learning styles of the latter of the department .
The document discusses e-content and e-learning. It defines e-content as any information that can be displayed, processed, stored or transmitted electronically. E-content has three components - content, application and exchange. The profile of today's library user is discussed, noting that users want convenient information delivered flexibly. E-learning is defined and the role of libraries in supporting e-learning through finding and organizing resources is described. Challenges for libraries include developing e-content and integrating it into e-learning systems. The talk concludes by reflecting that e-content in higher education will increasingly be created and shared by empowered students.

sers of Institutional Repositories and Digital Libraries are known by their needs for very specific information about one or more subjects. To characterize users profiles and offer them new documents and resources is one of the main challenges of today's libraries. In this paper, a Selective Dissemination of Information service is described, which proposes an Ontology-based Context Aware system for identifying user's context (research subjects, work team, areas of interest). This system enables librarians to broaden users profiles beyond the information that users have introduced by hand (such as institution, age and language). The system requires a context retrieval layer to capture user information and behavior, and an inference engine to support context inference from many information sources (selected documents and users' queries).

Document delivery services (DDS) supply documents to users on demand in print or electronic form. Traditionally, DDS involved lending documents from libraries' collections, but technology now allows electronic delivery of scanned or full-text documents over long distances. Many stakeholders participate in DDS, including database producers, publishers, aggregators, and open archives. Library cooperation and networking help meet increasing demands for access to documents.

This document provides information about open access resources available through the Delhi University Library System (DULS) in India. It discusses the various types of open access resources DULS provides, including subject gateways, e-journals, and e-books freely available on their website. The document also provides details on DULS' print collections and subscribed electronic resources, highlighting their role in supporting the teaching, learning, and research needs of Delhi University.
The document discusses institutional repositories and their role in managing and disseminating digital materials created by academic institutions and their communities. It provides definitions of institutional repositories by Clifford Lynch, describing them as services offered by universities to manage and distribute digital materials created by the institution and its members with a commitment to long-term preservation. Institutional repositories are centered around academic institutions and contain scholarly works of varying degrees produced by that institution. They aim to maximize access to and preservation of an institution's research outputs.

THE PROBLEM AND REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Library is a place to go when you need to know, it is
a place where you can see lots of books, written or printed
materials that can support the curriculum of the users
being served. The La Salle University Libraries and Media
Centers aims to provide different formats to enhance
classroom instruction, encourage research, and promote
continuous education through the use of its resources. La
Salle University Libraries and Media Center not only
provides books but an also electronic resource which is the
ProQuest.
ProQuest is a gateway to the world’s knowledge that is
from dissertations to governmental and cultural archives to
news, in all forms this include electronic and microform
information products and services to different
institutions. This takes the role of important to libraries
and organizations whose mission is depending on the
delivery of complete and trustworthy information. This
known database contains extensive general reference
resource providing access to many publications with more
2. 2
than those in full text (Curtis, 2005).
The advantage of having this kind of resources is that
it is widely known and it is used by many institutions in
the Philippines like De La Salle University, Ateneo,
University of the Philippines, etc, and its proven useful
in all kinds of needs.
The database includes citations of graduate and
undergraduate works ranging from the first U.S.
dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as
recently as last semester. Of the 2.3 million graduate
works included in the database, ProQuest offers more than
1.9 million in full text formats. Of those, over 860,000
are available in PDF format. More than 60,000 dissertations
and theses are added to the database each year.
La Salle University-Ozamiz City subscribes this
database because of the partnership with De La Salle
Philippines (DLSP) and it gives only a minimal fee from the
original fee of subscription which is P1,619,953.34.
ProQuest can be accessed in campus and off-campus. For
off-campus, the user makes it sure that there is an
internet connection by searching the URL
search.proquest.com and type the I.D. number and password
and for in-campus there is no need for you to log-in since
it was being programmed already to all computers inside the
3. 3
campus. The users also can make his/her account for
continuously reading the article and can save his/her time
to access the information again. ProQuest can be accessed
in integrated school and LSU Heritage campus.
The library promotes the resources by posting it to
the library bulletin board and electronic board, by posting
the poster in the entrance of the library, by posting the
URL in the front of the computer below the monitor, and the
Library and Media Centers also conducted orientation on how
to use the ProQuest.
Therefore, the researchers would like to conduct a
study to know whether the students are using or not using
ProQuest, whether the students aware the availability of
ProQuest, there frequency to the usage of proQuest, the
reasons of using ProQuest and the barriers in using
ProQuest.
Review of Related Literature
ProQuest connects people to information anywhere they
study, work, invent or seek to learn.
According on Reitz (2004), ProQuest is an information
service that supply online indexing of articles
published in thousands of current publication, including
the full-text of a important number of titles. ProQuest in
4. 4
one of the leading aggregators of journals accessible in
electronic format relies on the widespread
UMI microfilm collection to enlarge its digital back files.
According to Scheeren (2010) (in De Seta, 2004) stated
that e-journals in reality is the infinite mass of research
publications that are available in the databases or in
electronic format and more sources are available there.
Some of these sources are for free subscription and others
are fee-based.
E-journals are being widely used in any aspect for a
variety of purposes by all users, they are used for study,
academic research, publishing articles/books, for their
thesis, finding reliable information in the area of
specialization, and completion of assignments and seminar
or orientation presentations.
ProQuest enormous information band, built through
organization with content creators, finds the way through
technological modernization that enables users to quickly
find the right information and can access in a minimal time.
According to Curtis (2005), if library serves a
university community that is primarily undergraduates, many
of them will be looking for articles in scholarly journals
that are readable by non-specialist. They would be better
5. 5
off in one of the general indexes like ProQuest research
databases.
The decision-making process for subscribing of
electronic resources materials usually includes a
determination of content, access, reliability, bias and how
the information will support the needs of the library
client and additional consideration is that the cost of the
databases and the library's technical ability to support it.
Electronic resources have given users the impression
that they do not need a library or librarian since they can
find full-text material on the internet, can do research
from home or the office without even going to the library,
and can access electronic tools from remote locations,
Seveeney (2011)(in De Seta, 2004). By default, these are
becoming preferred sources and often the only sources of
user consults. This means that libraries have to develop
some method of communication to support remote users and
computer based instruction on their Web site to assist
those users in using the library resources. They expect
librarians to know about all the electronic resources the
library has and to help the users to learn to use them
quickly. They also expect faster service because the
electronic atmosphere gives the impression of speed and
infinite possibility.
6. 6
Awareness
Awareness means having knowledge of something is the
state or ability to perceive, to feel, or to
be conscious of events, objects, or sensory patterns. In
this level of consciousness, sense data can be complete by
an observer without necessarily implying understanding.
Awareness is considered the main factor influencing
the success of e-journals while the resources playing a key
role in this area discovering systems and indexing and
abstracting sources. But what is more precisely the user
perception of easy access? As user studies have shown, it
is associated to several aspects, such as service
availability at any time and from any location, speed of
information delivery, availability of user-friendly
interfaces and technologies, support from the library,
navigation functionalities, IT infrastructure, and
authentication processes (Bishop, A.P., 1995; Harter, S.P.
and Kim, H.J., 1996; McKnight, C., 1997) (in Woodward, H.
et al., 1998)
ProQuest a service or any publication intended to
aware scholars, readers, customers, researchers, or
employees to recently published literature in their fields
of specialization; frequently available in academic
7. 7
libraries serving organizations, companies and institutions
in which access to current information is essential. Some
online catalogs and bibliographic databases include a
“preferred searches” option to allow the library user to
archive search statements and re-execute them as needed
(Reitz,2004).
Uses
The ProQuest supports researchers of every type—
students at every level, faculty, information
professionals, and researchers, varied information packaged
digitally for enhanced discovery, sharing, learning and
management.
ProQuest is navigated through technological innovations
that enable the different users to quickly find the
suitable information that would satisfy the user needs.
ProQuest is a largest aggregated database of periodical
content which features a highly-respected, diversified mix
of content including scholarly journals, trade publications
magazines, books, newspapers, reports and videos. ProQuest
creates specialized information resources and technologies
that drive successful research and lifelong learning. A
global leader, that serves all types of libraries. The
8. 8
database is updated multiple times a day and is marketed
primarily towards libraries and academic institutions.
Barriers
One of the barriers in accessing e-resources is
automatic electric shutdown which is unexpected thing to
happen and also in dealing with different formats with
different access and use modes just like PDF, HTML, etc.
The literature of e-resources reports the following
user-centered barriers to e-resources use: a lack of skills
in how to use information sources, a lack of appropriate
reward for electronic scholarly communication, a lack of
consistent technical support and provision and a lack of
time to be spent on searching for information (Tompsett and
Alsop1997; Macias-Chapula 1995; Ray and Day 1998) (in
Woodward, 1998). Borgman (1996)(in Woodward, 1998)
concludes that use of online e-resources and retrieval
systems requires a basic knowledge of computing and
searching skills.
The use of a computer as a medium for reading and
interacting with course materials offers advantages such as
efficient searching, convenient storage of large amounts of
information, and navigation via hyperlinks that connect
sections of text argues that the migration to the web of
9. 9
content traditionally delivered by instructors in lecture
format is helping shift the function served by brick and
mortar classrooms from information delivery to
collaboration and discussion. This paper contends that in
resource where students have limited access to the
Internet, the value of web content is evident when learning
resources are downloaded and read offline. This means that
students do not need to be online to read resources nor
incur unnecessary printing.
Theoretical Framework
This study is anchored on the theory of Joe Reynolds
(2001) which states that: "ProQuest is an essential
resource for researchers. This rich electronic archive will
bring the world situation complete history to life: from
its first issue-a fourpage, rag-paper issue from the post-
Civil War era-through the World Wars, the Cold War, the
Watergate era, and into the 21st century. This is a
privileged to bring this proprietary information to
ProQuest users."
According to De Seta (2004), as the standards-based
education movement grows, teachers want more than ever to
find and use the right instructional resources to address
national, state and local educational standards. As a
10. 10
leading content supplier, one of ProQuest’s most
significant roles is to supply mentor with the tools,
properties and resources to achieve that goal."
In addition to the studies conducted by De Seta (2004)
is that other supplier offer standards-based searching
merely for limited content position, with standing
alignment to standard. ProQuest is the first collective
database provider to offer the service with active
searching crossways content and every current condition and
national knowledge standard. In a whole, eLibrary will
consent educators to search by standards crossways more
than 50 million documents and above.
Statement of the problem
This study was conducted to determine the use,
awareness, frequency, reasons and barriers of ProQuest to
the college students of La Salle University, Ozamiz City,
School Year 2013-2014.
Specifically, it attempts to answer the following
questions:
1. How many LSU students use the ProQuest?
2. How the LSU students are made aware of the
availability of the ProQuest?
3. What is the frequency of the respondents’ usage of
11. 11
the ProQuest?
4. What are the reasons LSU students uses ProQuest?
5. What are the students’ barriers in using ProQuest?
Significance of the study

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
This chapter presents, analyzes and interprets data
drawn from the conduct of the study. These were done in the
manner the problems are presented in the first chapter.
Table 2 Distribution of number of students who use

The Table 2 shown that 364 respondents out of 505 are
20. 20
aware of ProQuest and out of 364 respondents’ only 281 uses
the ProQuest.
It claims that they are aware of ProQuest and it
proves that the school has subscribed to ProQuest. This
means that the school has made efforts for students to know
that they can use ProQuest in school.
As presented in Table 2 that 77% of the respondents
are answered YES that they used ProQuest. It shows that
they are really using it for their further studies and made
the database being useful in any terms.
Romanis and Aarnio (2006) (in Anaraki, 2013) supported
that the use of electronic resources differed among
students. Information-searching skills are correlated with
the use of electronic resources, but the level of basic
skills does with the use of electronic resources, but the
level of basic skills does play a major role in using these
resources. The student data shows that adequate training in
information-searching skills will increase the use of
electronic information resources.
Table 3 Sources of Respondents’ Awareness on ProQuest
Availability
21. 21
As shown in Table 3 that respondents made aware of the
ProQuest availability through the use of the bulletin board
which is rank as number 1 and the respondents least aware
of Proquest through browsing the internet.
The University library bulletin board should be
updated, attractive, and informative because as what shown
above that the library really gives big impact to the
user’s awareness of ProQuest.

4.20 range and it is minor barrier and accurately
reproducing color illustrations from electronic articles
has the lowest mean of 3.60 which is minor barrier.
According to Bishop (1995), it is associated to
several aspects, such as availability at any time and from
any location, speed of information delivery, availability
of user-friendly interfaces and technologies, support from

the library, navigation functionalities, IT infrastructures
and authentication processer.
Based on a survey on ARL and non-ARL libraries,
Shemberg and Grossman (1999) (in Bishop, 1995) identify the
following methods available to users for accessing e-
articles such a searching an electronic index, finding a
citation and being linked to the full text, searching an
electronic index, finding a citation and searching the
library’s OPAC, searching an e-journal web page.
Chapter 4
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This chapter presents the summary, conclusions and
recommendations of the study.
26. 26
Summary
This study aimed at finding out the use of ProQuest
among LSU students. This study was conducted in La Salle
University - Ozamiz City with 505 respondents coming from
the seven colleges and one school.
The descriptive method of research particularly survey
type was used. The researchers used the calculation size
method in getting the respondents of the study.
The data gathered were analyzed and the findings are
presented based on problem stated in the first chapter.
1. 281 respondents uses ProQuest out of 364
respondents aware of it.
2. Bulletin board ranks first (189 responses) that
made the respondents aware of the availability of
ProQuest.
3. The respondents are occasionally using the ProQuest
which has 58%.
4. Research is the main reason of using ProQuest and
it is ranks first and has 281 responses which are
100% from the respondents.
27. 27
5. Dealing with several different formats (PDF, HTML,
etc.) with different access and use modes has the
highest mean and it is minor barrier.
Conclusion
Based on the findings presented on this study, the
researchers conclude that the use of ProQuest among LSU
students must be implemented and promoted because ProQuest
is very important for all students in finding reliable
information connection to the subject interest in their
researches and in order to make used all the electronic
resources that the school purchases.
Recommendations
In the light of the result of the study, the following
recommendations are set into views.
1. The libraries of La Salle University must inform
everyone about ProQuest by having a formal
orientation on its functions and uses.
