Marine sediments originate from various sources including weathering of continents, volcanic eruptions, biological activity, and chemical processes. Sediment classification is based on grain size and composition. Coarser sediments indicate higher energy depositional environments while finer sediments like silts and clays indicate lower energy. Biogenic sediments are composed of marine microfossil remains while authigenic sediments form from chemical precipitation in seawater. The majority of sediments accumulate on continental margins with the thickest deposits along coastlines that receive river and glacial inputs and thinner deposits in the deep ocean basins.
