A 29-year-old patient fell 10 feet backwards from a rock wall, landing on their lower back and experiencing sharp lower back pain. Flexion distraction injuries to the spine occur when the vertebral body distracts or separates anteriorly due to an axial load combined with flexion, such as from a fall. Flexion distraction injuries can range from burst fractures caused by high axial loads to fracture dislocations from high energy impacts, and may require surgical stabilization depending on the severity and energy of the injury.
