Memory and Studying: Retaining What You Learn
Every student experiences the frustration of working hard to remember
something that seems irrelevant.
To handle a situation where frustration and discouragement comes to place
I would first think about my future and my upbringing. I would ask myself
different questions like: Who will I hurt in the future? Who am I doing this for? Do
I want to be someone? Do I want to live an American Lifestyle? As soon as I start
thinking about the responses then I would immediately forget about the fact that
this information is irrelevant. I just want to get it over with. Once I’m done with
that particular assignment then I will forget that it even happened. Next approach
is to know how to handle the situation. I would first try to handle it myself by
going to study groups and making flash cards. Working as a group is the perfect
way to get others input on something that is irrelevant. Studies show that if you
work as a group to study for a subject, 75% of students are likely to pass a test so,
that statistics gives me more encouragement. Or,I would eventalk to the
instructor about the parts that are confusing to me. My instructor is very good at
explaining assignments and procedures so, I know if I go to her that everything
will work out for me. Everyone has a way for memorizing information, my way
don’t really help as much but that’s just how I like my surrounding.Memorizing
information and using music to study is the two techniques that I would resist. I
can’t memorize the information because I have a tendency of forgetting
information. I have short-term memory. I remember the information when I

2. recite and read over it but I can’t remember it if I don’t go back and check.
Sometimes stress or having too much to do can make you forget things. When I
use music, I focus more on the music then what I’m studying. Music is a
distraction to me because it helps relieve stress and relax.The information is
definitely unrelated. The fact that it’s unrelated it makes student lazier to go forth
and start on it. I would be willing to try tutoring because the subject is irrelevant.
The reason for tutoring is not the fact that I don’t get it, it’s because I know that I
can count on someone with more knowledge that will explain the importance to
me. I might not see the importance of it but the tutors will. Norton’s story makes
me realize that working as a group is better than working on my own. I love to
work by myself so, actually seeing improvement in his work with working with
other classmates makes me have second thoughts. Effects that can take me
beyond my world are the values in my life. Norton has a good way of studying,
which is using note cards. I use note cards as well. Norton’s thinking skills
compose a way for me to take action. Analytical thinking: evaluating questions
and answers that are being stated in the book and in lectures. Creative: Use my
imagination to do the best that i can, even if i don’t know how. Practical thinking:
actually taking action and participating in study sessions. Education is an
admirable thing that’s why Norton is a successful man despite his difficulties in
the past. I take lessons from Norton that will anticipate more upbringings for me
in the future.
