This document summarizes a chapter about the Apostolic Church from a confirmation class. It discusses that the Apostolic period was the time when the Apostles spread the Gospel after Pentecost. Key events included the Church transitioning from a Jewish to Gentile faith and leadership passing to bishops. The document also describes how the Council of Jerusalem decided non-Jews could convert without circumcision. It highlights the missions of St. Paul and St. Peter in spreading Christianity.

Catholic Schools: Centers of the New EvangelizationJonathan Sullivan
My presentation from the 2014 National Catholic Educational Association Convention and Expo:
For fifty years the Church has exhorted the faithful to engage in a “new evangelization.” The call to be missionaries is especially relevant for Catholic schools where young people are formed as disciples of Christ. This presentation for Catholic school teachers and administrators helps focus their work in the context of the New Evangelization. Participants will gain an understanding of the New Evangelization and learn steps for integrating it into the classroom and school community.

It is very important to call if you cannot make it to your appointment. The clinic and the parent decide on a rescheduled appointment time. The appointment will now take place a different day and the clinic will be able refill that time slot with another patient. Some clinics will not make any more appointments with people who have not shown up to scheduled appointments in the past. By calling and telling the clinic you cannot come will allow you to still make appointments at that clinic.

The Church is “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.” These are the four characteristics or “marks” of the Church.
The Church is one because it is unique: Christ founded one Church, and fall members of the Church are united in his one body.
The Church has been afflicted by various schisms and divisions, but remains in essence one. All Christians are called to work toward greater unity with one another.

29 AD – the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus
The birth of the Church at Pentecost
c. 100 AD – The death of the last Apostle, John (at Ephesus) This period is called Apostolic because the Apostles were alive and preaching during this time The primary source for information about this period is Acts of the Apostles, considered to be a continuation of Luke’s account.
The first Christians had no doubts about how to determine which was the true Church and which doctrines the true teachings of Christ. The test was simple: Just trace the apostolic succession of the claimants.
Apostolic succession is the line of bishops stretching back to the apostles. All over the world, all Catholic bishops are part of a lineage that goes back to the time of the apostles, something that is impossible in Protestant denominations (most of which do not even claim to have bishops).
The reason is that during all the time that the Church shall exist, there must have true pastors - "For the work of the ministry, for the edification of the body of Christ,"—Ephes. chap. iv.
And yet it's not enough for there simply to be priests, but these these watchmen/priests must be lawfully sent. St. Paul who in speaking of the missionaries for the faith and the God’s great blessing of God upon such men, nevertheless does not fail to affirm (Romans 10) "How shall they preach unless they be sent?" But even prior to this we read in the Old Testament that of such self appointed missionaries God Himself complains by the mouth of Jeremiah saying,—Jer, xxiii, 21:—"I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied ."
St. Paul doesn't limit the importance of having a lawful mission from the Church merely to preaching but also to the very reception of Holy Order itself, that is why in his letter to the Hebrews he expressly states that "no man takes the honor of the priesthood upon himself, but he that is called by God as Aaron was,"—Heb. v, 4.
And so it seems clear from scripture at least that the succession of pastors must be one that is lawfully authorized. For this reason the Church has always continued along this path, by the power that Christ had originally given to His apostles in the words: "As my Father has send me, I also send you" (Matt 28).
It was by means of this Apostolic Succession that Christ intended His Church to endure until the end of world with the 4 marks with which he founded it. In other words it is by this Apostolic Succession that we are to know the true Church from all the counterfeit claimant churches of today because the true Church must derive, by a perpetual and uninterrupted succession from the Apostles, her doctrines, her mission, and her orders.
It is easy to gloss over the hardships that St. Paul endured to preach the Gospel of salvation to the world. Record the dangers he faced and then find an image or modern day story that provides an example that brings to life the same dangers St. Paul faced. Please complete your project for next week to present to the class and display.
the hardships that St. Paul endured to preach the Gospel
Philip the Evangelist was told by an angel to go to the road from Jerusalem to Gaza, and there he met the Ethiopian eunuch. He had been to Jerusalem to worship (Acts 8:27), and was returning home. The eunuch was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah, and had come to Isaiah 53:7-8. Philip asked the Ethiopian, "Do you understand what you are reading?" He said he did not ("How can I understand unless I have a teacher to teach me?"), and asked Philip to explain the text to him. Philip told him theGospel of Jesus, and the Ethiopian asked to be baptized. They went down into some water and Philip baptized him.
The Vision of St. Peter
God commands him to violate Jewish dietary laws
therefore showing him that he should reconsider some Jewish practices like what they eat and who they eat/associate with.
They followed Jewish laws and traditions - They did not mix with Gentiles (non-Jews) Peter had a vision that let him understand that baptism was for all people, not only those born into Judaism
St Peter vision which showed him the dispensational change from Law to Grace.
Peter's Vision
This scene of Peter's vision of a sheet filled with animals carries great significance, because it underscores the disciples' understanding that the gospel was to be spread also to the Gentiles. The text from Acts 11:1-18 follows:
"Now the apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him, saying, "Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?"
Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying,"I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. I also heard a voice saying to me, 'Get up, Peter; kill and eat.'
But I replied, 'By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.' But a second time the voice answered from heaven, 'What God has made clean, you must not call profane.' This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven.
At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were. The Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and us. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man's house. He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, 'Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; he will give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved.' And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning.
And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?"
When they heard this, they were silenced. And they praised God, saying, "Then God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life."
After the failure of his ministry we see that God gave St Peter a special revelation to show him that Things were changing, and this was the vision of Heaven opening and “a great sheet knit at the four corners” being let down to earth: Where in were all manor of Four footed beasts of the Earth and wild creeping things, and fowls of the air. And there came a voice to him, “Rise, kill, and eat.” But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything common or unclean. And the voice spake unto him again a second time, “What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.” This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven. (Acts 10vs11-16)Now the significance of this vision is to show Peter that the levitical Laws by which he lived as a Jew were being suspended…in fact superseded by a new dispensation of grace without the works of the Law! This is an incredible dispensational change! This also explains why Christians today can eat Pork and other things that were forbidden under the Jewish Law. We are under a completely different ‘Contract’ with God.
See God’s Vision Clearly. In Acts 10:11-13 Peter receives a shocking new vision of the beautiful new world God is creating, in stark contrast toBy Doug Jaques
the accepted norms of the day. Through Christ, who is our peace, “you who were far off have been brought near…he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall… creating one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace (Ephesians 2:13-15).” In seeing God’s vision Peter says “God shows no partiality” (10:34, 11:12) and “makes no distinction between them and us” (11:12, 15:9). Paul calls it “the mystery of the Gospel” (Ephesians 1:9, 3:3-6) that “Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body.” As a stream running in the Hebrew Scriptures, through Jesus life and ministry, and beginning in Acts, Peter finally sees this vision clearly.
See and Diagnose Racism Clearly, understanding the roots of our own exclusion and resistance to God’s vision. Citing Levitical law in 10:14 Peter uses his faith and religion to openly challenge Jesus’ vision for intercultural transformation, “I have never eaten anything that is unclean or profane.” We must be open about our own sordid past, and acknowledge that racism is more than hate crimes. Though our reasons might be slightly different, we too must see racism in its full systemic and individual expressions.
Council of Jerusalem (or Apostolic Conference) is a name applied by historians and theologians to a Christian Apostolic Age council that was held inJerusalem and dated to around the year 50 AD.
Around the year 48 an issue arose in Antioch concerning the circumcision of non-Jews, when some Christians coming from Judea claimed their freedom acquired in Christ Jesus (cf. Gal. 2:4), which even Paul and Barnabas invoked so as not to impose this rite of circumcision on pagan converts to Christianity. The community decided to consult the Apostles and Elders of Jerusalem. Thus, it sent Paul and Barnabas together with Titus, their Greek companion, as well as a delegation to accompany them to Jerusalem.
Derived from the Greek Πετρος (Petros) meaning "stone". This is a translation used in most versions of the New Testament of the name Cephas, meaning "stone" in Aramaic, which was given to the apostle Simon by Jesus (compare Matthew 16:18 and John 1:42). Simon Peter was the most prominent of the apostles during Jesus' ministry and is often considered the first pope.
