of His death and resurrection
redeemed the world;

The Church Came First Before the Bible
33AD, Jesus left us a Church.
The teaching of Jesus was preserved by
the Church.
This Church, led by the Holy Spirit,
guards the deposit of faith.
300-400AD, the Church compiled the

Who Gave the Church the Authority?
It was by the Apostolic Tradition that the Church
discerned which writings are to be included in the
list of sacred books.
CCC120
Authority of the Church does not come from the
Bible alone (Sola Scriptura).
Rather the authority of the Church comes from
Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.

10. What does Jesus say about the Church?
Anyone who listens to you,
listens to me; anyone who
rejects you rejects me, and
those who reject me reject
the one who sent me.
(Luke 10: 16)
I will give you the key to

The Church governs, teaches and sanctifies.
Quick Summary
The authority of the Catholic Church comes directly from Jesus Christ,
Son of the Living God.
The Catholic Church handed down the Divine Revelation in two forms
i.e. Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture; both are equally important
and complement each other.
The Catholic Church discerned and decided which books are inspired
by the Holy Spirit and to be included in the Canon of Bible.
The Catholic Church came first. Then the Bible.

earthly goods. (Acts 2: 44-47; 4: 32-37)
Jerusalem was filled with preaching, miracles
& wonders worked through the apostles by
the power of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2: 43; 3: 1-26)
The apostles proclaimed boldly the good
news despite orders to stop preaching by the
authorities. (Acts 4 & 5)
Many died for their faith. (Acts 6 & 7)
Conversion of Saul, a Pharisee & most
ferocious persecutor of the early Church. He

(Jn 10:16)
Jesus prayed that “we may all be one” (John 17: 21)
There is one body and one spirit… one faith. (Ephesians 4: 4-5)
17. The Church is only ONE
She acknowledges one Lord,
confesses one faith,
born of one Baptism,
forms only one Body,
is given life by one Spirit,
for the sake of one hope (cf.
Eph 4: 3-5),
at whose fulfillment all
divisions will be overcome.
CCC 866
The Church can only be ONE
“If faith is not one,
then it is not faith.”
(St Leo the Great)
There is only one faith
because there is only one God,
not gods.
There is only one Truth,
not truths.
(Pope Francis, Lumen Fidei, 2001, Para 37)
18. The Church is ONE??
Today there are more than
40,000
Christian denominations.
When we are not happy,
we break away & set up a new denomination.
This is the Tower of Babel of our time.
The Church is meant to be only ONE
“I pray not only for these,
but also for those
who through their teaching
will come to believe in me.
May they all be ONE,
just as, Father,
you are in me
and I am in you…”
Prayer of Jesus to the Father (John 17: 20-21)
19. The Church is meant to be only ONE
St Paul warned the Ephesians of
three threats to the Church’s unity:
Arguments
between
Christians
Eph 4: 14-15
Diversity in
service
Eph 4: 7-11
Unorthodox
teaching
Eph 4: 4-6,
12-13, 16
The Church is meant to be only ONE
Ephesians 4: 3-6 Call to Unity
Take every care
to preserve the unity of the Spirit
that binds us together.
There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
and one God and Father of all,
over all, through all, and within all.
There is one Body,
one Spirit,
just as one hope
is the goal of your calling by God.

Love Jesus but hate the Church?
You cannot have God

if you do not have
the Church

(St Cyprian, c. 200-258 AD)

But she is my mother.

Outside the Catholic Church?
30. YouCat #136
• The Church respects everything in other religions that
is good and true. She respects and promotes freedom
of religion as human rights. Yet she knows (and
professes) that Jesus Christ is the sole redeemer of all
mankind. He alone is “the Way, the Truth and the Life”
(John 14: 6).
YouCat #136
The Church teaches that all men who by no
fault of their own do not know Christ but
sincerely seek God and follow the voice of
their conscience can attain eternal salvation.
However, anyone who has recognized that
Jesus Christ is “the way, the truth and the
life” but is unwilling to follow Him, cannot
find salvation by other paths.

32. The Church in the Modern World
What concerns the humans, concerns the Church
The Holy See was granted permanent observer state (i.e.,
non-member state) status on 6 April 1964.
In that capacity, it has the right to attend all sessions of the
United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations
Security Council, and the United Nations Economic and
Social Council to observe their work.
Accordingly, the Holy See has established permanent
observer missions in New York and in Geneva and has
been able to influence the decisions and
recommendations of the United Nations.

The blood of the martyrs, the seed of our faith.

you must realize that
it hated me before it

they will persecute you

John 15: 18-20
35. The End of Time (Rev 22: 17, 20)

that make it possible for all believers
to make a common profession.

37. The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God.
the Father almighty
maker of heaven and earth
of all things visible and invisible
The Nicene Creed
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
The Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through Him all things were made.
38. The Nicene Creed
(Please bow while praying this)
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
And by the Holy Spirit was incarnate
of the virgin Mary,
and became man.
The Nicene Creed
For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate,
He suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
39. The Nicene Creed
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
The Nicene Creed
I believe in the Holy Spirit
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
40. The Creed
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.
