Chapter 23
Innovation
Scientific Writing and Communication, 2e Angelika H. Hofmann Copyright © 2014 by Oxford University Press
Function of the Innovation
• Delineates how innovative your research is
• Allows peer reviewer to assess the
importance of a grant application
Scientific Writing and Communication, 2e Angelika H. Hofmann Copyright © 2014 by Oxford University Press
Length and Focus of
the Innovation Section
Make your Innovation section concise
• Length: ½ to 1 page
Aim to answer the following questions:
• What is your innovation?
• Why is your approach better than what has been done
before?
• What makes it novel?

Think Outside the Box…
. . . but not too far
Be cautious about seeming too innovative
•Proposing paradigm shift can be dangerous
•Especially as a new investigator
•Think of innovation as the knowledge your project can
contribute to your field
•Remember, the primary objective of your application is to
get funding

Emphasis in the Innovation Section
Examples of what to emphasize:
• Innovative methods
• Refinements
• Improvements
• New specific aim
• New approaches or methodologies
• New combination of expertise
• Innovative equipment
• Paradigm shift—with caution

Sample Innovation Overview
Our proposal is innovative in several ways:
(a) it combines epidemiology, network
theory, economics, psychology, and game
theory to meld important characteristics of
an epidemic in a single multi-level modeling
framework; (b) it extends behavioral
modeling in epidemiology to allow for
multiple interacting behavioral factors . . .;
(c) it evaluates cross-national scale
differences in vaccination decisions; and (d)
it yields probabilistic predictions based on
novel data and informative models . . .

Signal the Innovation statement
Examples of signals
– The proposed research employs a novel method that
we developed . . .
– These aims are original in that . . .
– Experiments outlined in this application will employ
a novel approach to generate . . .
– In this study, we will employ innovative methods
to . . .

Innovation Statement and Explanation
Example
Experiments outlined in this application will employ a novel
goal in deciphering eukaryotic ribosome structure. Previous
studies have only been carried out without inhibitors. Our
studies will look at eukaryotic ribosome structure in the
presence of inhibitors.
Example
Combining our respective expertise in microbiology and
plant genetics is a novel approach that will allow us to obtain
critical insights into chloroplast structure and function. Only
through this combination will it be possible to assess how
chloroplasts are related to certain primitive life forms . . .

Common Problems in the Innovation
• Your innovation is too far out of the box
• You equilibrated innovation with significance
• Innovation is not feasible and/or credible
• Innovation is not clearly stated or signaled
• Omission of important points

Innovation versus Significance
Distinguish between innovation and significance
