Juan de Salcedo explored the Ilocos region in northern Philippines and founded Villa Fernandina, which was later renamed Ciudad Fernandina de Vigan, in honor of Prince Ferdinand, the son of King Philip II of Spain. Vigan was originally an island separated from the mainland by three rivers and served as a coastal trading post, where Chinese traders exchanged goods with the local population. Don Juan de Salcedo officially established Villa Fernandina de Vigan on the island in honor of the Spanish royal family.

However, it also mentions that global business requires a multi-cultural perspective and global imagination, as well as an understanding of responsibilities and differences across cultures. The document presents a leadership model and identifies core competencies for global business professionals. It cites a source for the information provided.

SEFI-2013 Online Learning and Higher Engineering Education: The MOOC PhenomenonPieter De Vries
The document discusses the rise of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and their implications for higher engineering education. It notes that MOOCs provide open access to courses from top universities, reducing costs and expanding reach compared to traditional on-campus classes. Examples are provided of very large enrollments for MOOCs from MIT and Delft University, showing their growing popularity. While MOOCs have the potential to improve teaching and encourage innovation, there are still open questions around developing sustainable business models.
This document describes a project called reAct that aims to reduce dropout rates by developing a new learning approach using technology. The project involves partners from several European countries and seeks to inspire dropouts and teachers to engage in lifelong learning. It involves developing learning tools and concepts based on principles like trust, challenge, and creativity. Teachers will pilot the approach with students in their countries through collaborative projects and reflection activities over the course of six months. The goal is to help learners develop skills like reflection, critical thinking, and a lifelong learning mindset.
Continuing education and lifelong learning are important for both personal and professional growth. As jobs and skills change rapidly, retraining and developing new skills are keys to future employment and earnings. Institutions of higher education must respond to this need for lifelong learning by providing educational opportunities for working professionals to gain new skills and credentials through certificate and degree programs. Penn State York offers over 200 credit and non-credit programs in various fields to allow students to learn new skills, advance their careers, and remain competitive in a changing work environment.

Icelw 2012 re act social media to foster self organized learning for dropoutsPieter De Vries
The document describes a social media-based project called reAct that aims to foster self-organized learning for school dropouts. The project was conducted in multiple European countries from 2011-2012. It involved 300 learners and 50 trainers across two pilot studies. The learning concept was based on 7 principles: trust, challenge, self-direction, collaboration, ownership, creativity, and relevance. Learners engaged in collaborative creative projects using various social media tools. Evaluations found that learners appreciated gaining autonomy over their learning and believed what they learned could help them find jobs and connect with others, giving them more confidence. Teachers also felt it opened up new opportunities to promote learning.
Vigan was originally named "Biga'a" by Spanish explorer Juan de Salcedo due to the lush plants along the rivers. It was later renamed "Villa Fernandina" and "Ciudad Fernandina de Vigan" in honor of Prince Ferdinand, the first son of King Philip II of Spain. Chinese traders came to Vigan via river to trade goods with the local people. Some important landmarks in Vigan include Calle Crisologo, Burgos Museum, Palacio de Arzobispado Nueva Segovia, Cathedral of Vigan, and Bantay Bell Tower.
The document discusses informal learning in everyday life and how digital natives learn. It describes how current e-learning models are simply an adoption of traditional classroom-focused learning. Web 2.0 has influenced learning by enabling more social and collaborative learning through tools like Twitter, YouTube, Google Docs and wikis. Informal learning is important as around 80% of what we learn happens through colleagues, small talk, networks and other informal means compared to formal sources like documents and instruction manuals. New learning strategies need to incorporate both formal learning through classroom and e-learning as well as informal learning through social interactions and collaboration to match how current and future generations want to learn.
Social media to foster self-organized learning for dropoutsPieter De Vries
The document describes a social media-based approach to foster self-organized learning for school dropouts. A 2-year EU-funded project involved 300 learners and 50 trainers across 2 pilot studies in Portugal and the Netherlands. The approach was based on 7 principles: trust, challenge, self-direction, collaboration, ownership, creativity and relevance. Learners engaged in collaborative creative projects using social media tools like Google Docs, Facebook and YouTube. They provided feedback that the approach increased their confidence, gave them autonomy over learning, and made learning more relevant to future jobs and personal growth. Teachers also felt it opened up new ways to promote learning.
Online Learning and the Future of Engineering EducationPieter De Vries
This document discusses the future of engineering education and the role of online learning. It notes that traditional engineering education is highly sequential and specialized, but trends point to a need for more flexible, lifelong learning models. Online learning through open educational resources, massive open online courses, and learning analytics will be important to develop skills like collaboration, problem solving, and self-directed learning needed for a changing job market. The author advocates for more informal and networked learning opportunities, and positioning universities as facilitators and accreditors of online communities in order to educate the next generation of learners.

A person is considered to be mentally healthy when he or she is devoid of any form of mental illness, and this state is referred to as mental health. Any person's emotional, psychological, and social state all impact their mental health. A person's capacity to think, understand, feel, and act is influenced by their mental health. A person's capacity for managing stress and making crucial life decisions may also be impacted.

Trust is the cornerstone that inspires behavior, whether it’s donating, volunteering, or fundraising. As long as one remains within this validating cycle, retention is assured. And today, communities absolutely require an online element.
Join us for this enlightening session and learn how your nonprofit can effectively harness the power of communities to cultivate trust, inspire action, and retain supporters for the long haul.
This document summarizes a presentation about how social media helped with the rehabilitation of Mike Black, who suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI). It describes Mike's long recovery process and how his mother, Bernadette Coleman, used social media to update others on his progress, find resources and connect with other TBI survivors. While social media provided benefits like reducing isolation, it also posed challenges for Mike related to privacy, inappropriate contacts and lack of access. The presentation emphasizes the need for training and support so people with TBI can safely benefit from social networking.

How do you feel Today about your TBI? (LI, Leela Alvaraz)
… Kelly made the comment about profanity; my
whole life I never used it: then after my 7th TBI I
was cursing like a sailor and had such
uncontrollable emotional outbursts. I was not myself
and worse no one noticed because I didn't leave my
house; every time I did I was stalked. It took me
years to control my triggers and co-occurring
triggers …
I really appreciate everyone’s
contributions. I know it isn't easy to share personal
matters I also know there comes a time when the
matter of sharing becomes your way of letting go of
the impact imprinted all over your days and nights of
experiences that cloud your view of today…
Meaningful Quotes
“Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect. It means that you've
decided to look beyond the imperfections.” - Daryl Bryant
“Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of
opportunity.” ~ Hippocrates from Wendy Renzulla Heitkamp
“Those who are happy don't seek the best of everything. They make the best of
everything they have.” – Todd Gebow
Future Editing
Now that our “CG.news” 2nd Ed. Is complete, CG Admin. & CG Editors are extremely
interested in helping existing or building smaller groups (or “sub-groups”) to work on
details, with other CG Members. Some of our Members have “bridged-the-gap”
between their 1st CG (e.g. FB) & another of these (LI & G+). With the growing amount of
harmonious Poetry, there will also be examples of these.
