Vigan was originally named "Biga'a" by Spanish explorer Juan de Salcedo due to the lush plants along the rivers. It was later renamed "Villa Fernandina" and "Ciudad Fernandina de Vigan" in honor of Prince Ferdinand, the first son of King Philip II of Spain. Chinese traders came to Vigan via river to trade goods with the local people. Some important landmarks in Vigan include Calle Crisologo, Burgos Museum, Palacio de Arzobispado Nueva Segovia, Cathedral of Vigan, and Bantay Bell Tower.
