This document discusses UK film certificates, ranging from U (suitable for all ages 4 and over), PG (general viewing but some scenes may not be suitable for young children and suitable for ages 8 and over), 12 (suitable for ages 12 and over and may upset younger viewers), 12A (same as 12 but under 12s can watch with an adult), and 15 (under 15s cannot watch even with an adult due to violence or strong language). The U certificate means a film is suitable for all people over 4, while the 15 rating signifies a film with violence or heavy language that under 15s cannot view.

1. Certificate Research
This is the lowest rating in the film industry and is known to
be showing on several of children related films. It means
suitable for all. All ‘U’ films must be suitable for all people
over the age of 4 to be rates this way, which cuts out genres
such as horrors or many films with violence in them.
This certificate is the second lowest rating and stands for
‘Parental Guidence’ which is general viewing but some scenes
may not be suitable for young children. So unaccompanied are
allowed to watch but it should be suitable for ages 8 and over.
This rating should be suitable for 12 and over, and may upset
viewers under the age of 12. The certificate ‘12a’ is the same as
this but under 12 year olds can watch if accompanied by an adult.
This certificate means that under 15’s cannot watch this film and
cannot watch it even accompanied by an adult. Films rated with
this generally have violence or heavy language usage.
