U Films
When a film is marked as a U is suitable for any child over the age of 4. The films
often have a sensible moral story line and nothing upsetting would occur. A Horror
film would never be classed as a U. If there was something scary happening in the
film it would be very mild and no foul language would be used.
PG Films
A PG film often means Parental Guidance and anyone under the age of 8 has to have
a adult with them. In a PG film there would be no sexual content , no use of drugs and
mild bad language . Mild uses of violence may be used in the film but this can disturb
younger people if the are sensitive.
12 , 12A Films
A 12 A film is when a parent or adult has to be with the child under the age of 12
because of certain reasons that may occur in the film. A 12 Film is a age restriction
that the child can be no younger than 12 to watch the film , this is because if the
child is younger it may effect them.
15 Films
A 15 film is rated for a reason , no one under the age would be allowed to watch a film
if the restriction is 15 no one under the age can buy or rent anything with the
certificate on.
18 Films
For Adults Only
No-one younger than 18 may see an ‘18’ film in a cinema.
No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an ‘18’ rated video.
In line with the consistent findings of the BBFC’s public consultations and The Human
Rights Act 1998, at ‘18’ the BBFC’s guideline concerns will not normally override the
principle that adults should be free to choose their own entertainment.
