The cerebellum is located in the hindbrain and coordinates movement and balance. It receives proprioceptive information from the body and guides the cerebral cortex in executing movements. The cerebellum has three lobes - anterior, middle, and flocculonodular - that are involved in muscle tone, movement coordination and planning, and balance/posture, respectively. It connects to the brainstem via three cerebellar peduncles and has a cortex containing Purkinje cells and deep nuclei that help process motor information.
