Ceramics of the North and South Coasts Essay
Ceramics of the North and South Coasts Ancient Peruvian Ceramics of the North Coast March 11, 1997 The first pottery pieces found in Peru were
made somewhere between 1500 and 1000 b.p. The pieces were found in the central Andean region where a religious cult lived. This cult was called
ChavГn, after the best known ceremonial center, ChavГn de HuГЎntar. The religious center was the home to massive temples that were highly
embellished with low relief sculptures of gods, animals, and symbols. The pottery found in the area where vessels that were well made and highly
decorated with a similar motif as the temples. But the evolution of Peruvian pottery becomes somewhat confusing and complex after this first

Three other cultures in north coast valleys contributed their pottery style to the over all Cusisnique style that was evolving into the Mochica style.
These people were the Gallinazo, Recuay, and VicГєs. The Gallinazo constructed double chamber vessels with whistle spouts and a type of decoration
called negative decoration where they painted their simple designs on after the pieces were fired. The Recuay also had double chamber vessels but
these had one functioning spout and one sculpted, usually an animal or figure. They also used negative decoration but theirs were much more elaborate
designs than the Gallinazo vessels. The VicГєs lived in the highlands on the Ecuadorian border. They made very sculptural vessels with a stirrup handle
and central spout. Although a hand full of VicГєs artifacts have been found, not much is known about these people, but one can see a visible
connection between all of these different cultures and the Mochica style that evolved out of them. The Mochica civilization flourished for nearly 1000
years and as time passed slight changes in the style could be seen and are chronologically separated into Mochica I–V. The first two are formative
phases with lots of experimentation. The third concentrated on a distinctive art style, which continued through the forth and gradually declined in the
fifth. They expressed many aspects of their culture and daily life in their ceramics. Things like

Personal Narrative: My Midwestern Diagramic Career
As a self–taught potter, I have been working with clay for nearly 2 years. I make primarily functional wares fired to cone 10(2345В°f) using
porcelain or stoneware clay. I obtained a degree in political science from Winona State University in 2015. I am highly influenced by my experiences
as a production potter, other midwestern ceramic artists, and my rural/military upbringing. After graduating college, I promptly moved to Minneapolis,
MN and started what was meant to be a temporary position making coasters for Dock 6 Pottery owned by Kerry Brooks. Urged by my potter/co–worker
Johnne Law McMahan, I began to throw pots after work just to get a sense of what a day in the life of my co–workers (production potters) was like. It

Terracotta Skyphos
The first work I studied is the Terracotta Skyphos. It is a cup from early imperial time. It belongs to the Roman culture. It was made at Tarsus in Cilia.
It is from Cyprus. The cup is made out of Terracotta, which is a clay–like substance. It is fired clay that can that is durable and strong. It can be molded
into any shape. In Italian terracotta means "baked earth." Making a terracotta sculpture is quick, simple, and cheap. This cup was lead glazed; the
shape of the cup represents the Hellenistic period. It's a fancy work, decorated with plants and flowers. The plants look like it is popping out. It
resembles the repousse technique. The cup has a rough texture and the way the light hits it almost looks dark in some areas. On the display it... Show

Art encourages me to look at the world differently. The statue makes me think of how people were portrayed in the imperial period. The story
behind the copy of the original statue of Barberini Suppliant is compelling. It is of a young woman who has been taken advantage of. It is a bold
work of art. The original is more detailed and draws more attention then the one I analyzed but both works show and portray different stories. I
believe that they made minor changes to the copy but leaving out the body of the woman made it mysterious and hard to analyze. Greek art had a
major influence on Roman art and I see elements within these two works. These two works of art emphasized the importance of details. Without
details there is a lack of meaning. Without looking at the original work I would not know how to analyze the copy. It looks like a completely
different work of art. These two works of art have less in common than I thought. They come from the same time period but they are used and looked
at in different

The Ware : Practical Vessel
Kenzan Ware: Practical Vessel
A section dedicated to the art of "chanoyu", meaning "hot water for tea" in Japanese, and also known as tea ceremony is located in the "Asia:
Paintings and Decorative Arts" room at the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts. Within a glass case, there are four objects on display,
signifying few of the many vessels used for a tea ceremony. Many of them were created during or near a same time frame: Edo period, Japan, which
spans from 1615 to 1868. One of them is a tea bowl with a unique, almost modern looking design given a descriptive title called, "Tea Bowl with
Spring Grasses" created during the 18th century in Japan. Unlike its companion in the same case, a Satsuma black glazed tea bowl made of ... Show

Kenzan learned pottery from famous Nonomura Ninsei who established "Kyo–yaki", Kyoto Pottery, in mid 17th century. Kenzan opened his kiln when
he was 37 years old in 1699 in Narutaki, Kyoto where he created many artistic ceramics "Kenzan–yaki". His brother, Korin, often collaborated Kenzan
on decoration of pottery and created innovative artworks together (Wilson).
While the raku (meaning enjoyment, comfort, or ease) ware is commonly used when creating tea bowls, Kenzan avoided this technique due to having
a cousin who adopted into the Raku family (Wilson). So rather than using the hand molded approach that is often used for objects later to be used in a
tea ceremony, he decided to use his own methods and approach that still fitted the aesthetics of the tea ceremony. The bowl, which was treated like a
three–dimensional canvas, is distinctive to Kenzan's background in painting and calligraphy.
He formed the clay into a smooth, consistently shaped vessel. Then after the lid is formed, the two parts would be checked together to see if the size
of the lid is too large or small to cover the bowl. As it remained unfired, he later applied the decoration with a similar approach to a painter. In order to
imitate the effect of brushwork on absorbent paper, he applied colored pigments underneath a transparent glaze (Wilson). Kenzan first started on the
white background, painting a wave like shape reminiscent of mountains in the far distance behind the

Josiah Wedgewood's Life And Work
Josiah Wedgewood (1730–1795) Potter, Craftsman, Entrepreneur His early contribution was a process of making "creamware" which was more
refined and cheaper and local than the preferred luxury alternatives. He was a friend and later business partner with Thomas Bently who connected
him into the luxury ceramics market. After securing work for the Queen of England at the time Wedgewood was able to create the popular
Queensware products of ceramics. This caused him to look at expanding and reimagining his manufacturing process. He created a new process that
saved time and ensured uniformity and high quality in his products. Batch Production was a division of labor that used small standardized shapes of
all his products and used mold over potters wheels to make his ceramics. Adam Smith (1725–1790) Economist... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

His views became popular because of his pin factory analogy which described the process. In it, he mentions the division of labor which he praised for
its efficiency. The Americans used Adam Smith's principles to allow for specialization in their machine operations. This benefit of dividing the labor
allowed the fabrication of more complicated products and items with interchangeable parts Frederick Taylor (18–1915) Engineer Frederick Taylor was
an engineer who ran experiments in the 1880's on the common manufacturing process of his time. His goal was to increase the productivity of the
workers. The experiments measured the time to perform different tasks. He created recommendations for the workplace that became business
standards and were enforced in the workplace. Businesses used these as a measure of productivity and rewarded wages and other rewards on a basis
of performance. These changes created a shift in the workplace and a demand for higher compliance became the norm. Taylor helped create the need
for standards in the workplace. Henry Ford (1863–1947)

Conical Hat Definition
The thoughts about ceramic shape's history gave me a ground to be able to create the Conical Hat series works, and the investigation of conical hat
provides the depth of my work. However, it still has lots of space for my personal concepts and understandings in this series of work. According to
those studies on object and shapes, my central idea can be concluded into just one word which is "container". I view the Conical Hat series are
containers. Then, what is the container? Container is a Middle English word. It comes from contain with –er. It is a noun which means anything that
contains or can contain according to The Macquarie Dictionary. In The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, container appears as a word under the
explanation of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beyond to describe different kinds of containers, the act to be a container can mean something else and worth to think about it. Being a container
can be seen as taking the role of protection, storage or transportation. Different container can have different roles. It gives container a character that
can be classified. Besides, from the other side of this idea, after a container been found, the act afterwards also be assigned. It is like when you
found a jar, what you put in it will give the jar its value. Or like, you give different values to the same jar than other people did to it. According to
the analysis of container, there are two levels of how my Conical Hat series links to the concept of the container. First, conical hat is a kind of
container. Second, conical hat is a container of emotion. Conical hat is the container is the direct connection. From geometric sense, conical hat is a
hollow cone shape, which enables it could contain something in it. The object, which has ability to hold things, can be called container, which is not
related to it should or should not. It is a very straight

Results
This lab will record the growth process of embryo rescue in a hormone–free media.
The results on the percentages of attempts that resulted in the isolation of an intact embryo was 33%. This is due to the fact that this was the first time
that I performed an embryo rescue, and made a few mistakes along the way. The first mistake that occurred was that I cut too deep into the endosperm,
and cut into the embryo itself (a few times). Another mistake that was made was that I found it hard to cut into the seeds while using the forceps,
without losing the seed.
The percentage of intact embryos that developed into a plant was 33%, meaning the only one out of the three sprouted.
The changes that occurs during the progression from dormant embryo to active growth is that the crown becomes a reddish color, which is that is
appeared on most Wayfaringtree Viburnum. The red crown is due to the flavonoids that are apparent in the molecular structure.
Since Wayfaringtree Viburnum has to go through the cold stratification to break dormancy, the mechanism practice that would have to take place
would have to be a type of refrigeration or freezing process. This process is done for 8–10 weeks of holding temperature of 4В° C. These orthodox
seed will be placed in a refrigerator to break dormancy, and will continue to have continuous

Taking a Look at Shino Glazes
Shino Glazes
Shinos are traditional Japanese glazes that have high feldspar and clay content, and can produce a range of color and texture depending highly on
application and firing. The main colorant in shino glazes are the iron oxide impurities contained in various clays.
Historical Information
Shino originated in the Mino region of Japan during the Momoyama period (1573–1615 A.D.) and was discovered in an attempt to recreate a white
feldspathic glaze brought from China that belonged to the shogun Shino Soshin (1444–1523 A.D). The ceramic aesthetic of the time was largely
created by tea masters for Buddhist tea ceremonies. The first shino attempts were most likely the result of removing iron and iron rich clays from
temmoku, and the resulting glaze named for the Shogun; a celebrated tea master. Contemporary glaze developments of the period also included seto
and oribe. The Momoyama period marked the end of internal wars and final unification of Japan. Japan and Europe came into contact for the first
time, while trade flourished and encouraged social mobility. Mino and neighboring seto are of particular interest because they are the only areas that
produced glazed ceramics in the medieval period, and invented an improved kiln design; a variation of the Korean anagama, the ogama. The most
important features were a side entrance and domed main chamber that created a partial downdraft, producing a more even and efficient firing than
previously possible. Traditional

When visiting the McKissick Museum I was engrossed by the American Folk Art, ceramic Face Jugs, also known as ugly or grotesque jugs. There
are gaps in the history in regards to how the face jugs were made, what they were used for, and the meaning of the face vessel pottery. However it is
believed that these vessels were original, useful, creative expressions of the African slave culture of the time created as early as the seventeenth
century. Few artists of face jugs have been identified and their inspirations for producing the vessels are not completely known. According to Hirst, it
is believed that this art form originated in Edgefield County South Carolina, from African slaves who worked on the plantations as potters. They

Face Jugs have become more imaginative and peculiar as they became marketable. Today, either you love them or hate them. I personally find these
jugs intriguing. There is a mystery surrounding them which make them extremely interesting to me. Because South Carolina is a big tourists
attraction face jugs have attracted the attention of tourists. Replications of face jugs are made for tourists. They are not used as much for functional
use today, as they are more of a decorative or aesthetic art form. The jugs come in all shapes and sizes with a variety of facial features and expressions.
Many of the faces that I like have a symmetrical balance which, throughout this course, has caught my attention. The glaze used makes the face jugs
shiny and smooth. Ceramic Face Jugs are different, unique, mysterious, and good conversational pieces.
In summation, face jugs are representations of folk art by African–American slaves. There is a lot that we do not know and will never know about the
history of face jugs but they are interesting pieces of art. These jugs are unique and different no matter if they are used for

Caesarea Maritima Essay
The site of Caesarea Maritima contains many unique challenges for archaeological excavations. In spite of this, through pottery analysis,
archaeologists are able to learn about different aspects of the site. Nonetheless, Caesarea Maritima has a variety of specific challenges associated with
it for archaeologists. Not only does it cover a significant section of the coastal region, but the immense harbour, over time, has been completely
submerged in the sea. Along with geographical challenges, there are also historical ones. The site of Caesarea Maritima was inhabited from Hellenistic
time until the Crusaders, a period spanning over 900 years. As it was continuously inhabited, the archaeological layers contain the remnants of many

At the site of Tell el–Hesi, Petrie noticed specific styles of pottery at different stages of the dig (Petrie 1890). By a comparison of the different pottery
forms with similar pieces dated from previous sites, Petrie was able to date the surrounding material through the pottery. Significantly, by studying the
pottery forms, Petrie created an association between specific dates and forms of pottery (Petrie 1891) thus created a chronology which revolutionised the
archaeology of the Levant. To give an illustration of the impact which Petrie's discovery has had upon archaeology in the Levant, his chronology
has been used on archaeological sites in the region throughout the past century (Cole 1984; Tushingham 1986). In Caesarea Maritima Petrie's
discovery of dating a site through the pottery has assisted with dating both the city and the harbour of Sebastos. In the harbour, the discovery of
pottery was interpreted as evidence that the city was importing goods via sea trade, during the 3rd century AD (Hohlfelder 1988). While excavating
Caesarea Maritima the Department of Antiquities in Israel discovered that an area they were excavating was abandoned during the Arab conquest
(Yeivin 1955, p. 123). Yet, because there was evidence of pottery from the eighth and ninth centuries in addition to some lamps, it was evidence that
after the site had been abandoned it was resettled. Because of the discovery of Mameluke pottery, it became apparent that the site was superceded
during the Crusader period (Yeivin 1955, p. 123). Petrie's discovery of the association between pottery and dating, therefore, has assisted in the
archaeology of Caesarea

Harappan Stone Bead Making And Pottery
Harappan stone bead making and pottery are important aspects in identifying different archaeological time periods. Craft specialization is an indicator
of societies becoming more complex. Stone bead–making and pottery are both different types of craft specialization which indicate that the early of
cities and villages of the Harappan period have become more aware of society and economy. In Kenoyer, Vidale, and Bhan's "Contemporary stone
bead–making in Khambat, India," the stone beadmaking industry is studied and described as "important for supporting the state," (Kenoyer, Vidale,
Bhan 1991). This occupational specialization let to the development of an organized social structure that was closely monitored. Although there are
many references to multiple craft specializations at different sites, this article focuses on craft specialization that appears to be identified with
highly ranked societies. The fact that some scholars associate craft specialization with these highly ranked societies is incorrect because in all
societies technology was important and required individuals to be able to produce items efficiently. "The ability to create specific and efficient
technology requires specialization which is a sign of economic and social adaptions," (Rice 1984). Craft specialization was an adaptive process
because the ability to gather raw materials and produce special objects required a high level of competence and ability to work together. These
individuals had to learn how to

I was glad to see that some of the pots were setting upside down. I liked how I was able to see what the bottoms looked like. The Cobb Museum had a

etched circles added a decorated touch. The top of the lamp had a small looped handle. At the back of the case there was an interesting oil lamp. It
was tan colored with hints of red. The handle looked like the back fin of a whale. Next to the spout was a floral design. Two gazelles with long, thin
horns graced the sides of the lamp (http://www.cobb.msstate.edu/museum/). The lamp that stood out the most was a black lamp with four spouts
from Rome (Cobb). It was the only displayed lamp with multiple spouts. Two of the spouts were missing, but it was obvious where the missing ones
would have been. The two remaining spouts had wide openings. The lamp had protruding triangles between each spout to give the lamp a diamond

The gold lustreware bowl by Galileo Chini is an object which could seem on first glance devoid of special significance: just a beautiful decorative
object enjoyed at face value. (Fig.1) But in the seeming void I saw a repository of layered meanings which I attempted to interpret by examining the
artistic cross cultural influences in Florence in the late nineteenth century. And to address the question of why the Mediaeval Hispano–Moresque gold
lustreware and the design motifs of the Gothic Revivalist repertoires were found on this bowl. I examine why Chini became inspired to use these
designs and what they may have meant to him.

reduction in retail occupancy costs attributed to the 1 billion dollars the company enjoyed last year. I would also consider expanding the company's
customer base by broadening the product line to similar to Home Goods or Bed Bath and beyond who currently double the revenue of
Williams–Sonoma. (Redistribute assets earmarked for traditional cataloging to online accesses. Not only will this save money, but will also impact
paper usage. I believe advertising in this was has all but outlived its' usefulness.
3. Describe the competitive strategies used by each of Williams–Sonoma's competitors. Which of these are most effective?
Williams–Sonoma has six major competitors plus one more in their market. The company holds only 7.9% market share (FY10) to main competitor
Bed, Bath and Beyond with an astonishing 34.4%. (William–sonoma.com/investors) BBB's strategy is to offer competitive prices for quality products.
Its' target market is middle to upper middle class and this is the reason it fairs better in the current market. The Bombay Company's strategy was to

Dionysus Greek Pottery
Pottery was a huge part of the ancient Greeks lives. The pots were very highly decorated usually with scenes depicting Greek gods as a way of
worship to them. This paper will explore two examples of Greek pottery and explain their uses and what is seen on them and why. The first vessel
is a red figure bell krater, from around 380 BC, attributed to artist known as the Erbach painter. Typically red figure style deals with scenes of
everyday life rather than myth, this pot differs from this as it does contain myth but rather than depicting the action from a mythological tale, it
portrays a general scene of the Greek god, of wine drama and fertility, Dionysus. In this scene Dionysus is seen as a young man lounging on a blanket

440 BC. Like the other, it is a red figure bell krater featuring Dionysus. In this depiction of Dionysus he is again seen holding a thyros but unlike the
previous vessel instead of the presence of vines we see him holding a wine cup (kylix), which is a very common attribute of the god. To the right
we see a satyr playing the flute. The satyr could be one of the Titiyroi classes of satyr as he shares many of the main characteristics of them, such as
the flute and his tail. To the left of Dionysus stands a woman holding a wine jug (oinchoe). It is hard to tell who this woman is, as there are many
possibilities. She could be a maenad for the reason that maenads show up in a lot of artwork with Dionysus. However this would not be a normal
showing of a maenad. Maenads are usually seen holding a thyros, wearing a wreath of ivy, holding a musical instrument or wearing some kind of
animal print. This woman could be Ariadne, the wife of Dionysus. In Greek artwork, Ariadne is often seen with Dionysus. Both pots share a similar
artistic style and depict Dionysus in a very comparable way. The slight differences that you do see between them could be because of the time
difference between each work. Nevertheless both vessels depict Dionysus in the usual way. Both pots lack a mythical story behind it and seem to be
a general scene. While the first pot looks like a worship to Dionysus, the second pot looks like a general depiction of Dionysus and the people/creatures

Pottery Barn Website Review Paper
Pottery Barn (PB) has a user friendly and appealing website. Upon arrival, the customer has a main page with a display of PB's products in real
life settings. Across these scenes are the deals associated with the main product. Today's example is pillows on sale for 25% off. The website
shows the pillows in use on a couch in a living room. This is comparable to walking into PB and seeing the pillows on sale, place on a couch in a
living room scene with sale signs and tags posted. The consumer gets the same visual of the product in use. Across the top of the page, PB lists links
to the different departments in which products may be found. Just like a store map in the front of the store, the website allows the customer to find
products easily. PB's services are also linked on this main page, which acts as a virtual customer service desk. A shopper searching for towels clicks
on the BATH link. PB takes the customer to the bathroom page which showcases thesales on bathroom items. The customer has the option to choose
more specific bathroom items. The customer chooses bath towels to see PB's selection. Each set of towels has a section of the next page which

In 2001, the company added a Pottery Barn Kids web site, and a Pottery Barn online gift and bridal registry, and it opened five new retail stores in
Toronto, Ontario.
In line with its related diversification growth strategy, Williams–Sonoma tested a new catalog in summer 2002, under the West Elm brand. This new
brand targeted young, design–conscious customers seeking to furnish first homes/apartments/lofts with quality furniture and accessories at affordable
price points. West Elm product categories included furniture, decorative accessories, and an extensive textiles collection. In 2003, Williams–Sonoma
expanded its catalog mailings for West Elm, added a web site, and opened its first retail store.
Williams–Sonoma launched PB Teen with a catalog and web site in late April 2003. PB Teen was intended to fill the market space between Pottery
Barn and Pottery Barn Kids with hip, exclusively designed furniture, rugs, lighting, bedding, and accessories promoted with its catalog, interactive web
site, special sales campaigns, and contests.
The company's newest concept, Williams–Sonoma Home, was introduced in third quarter 2004 to tap into what company Chairman William H. Lester
noted had been an empty space between the Pottery Barn demographic and designer home furnishings. Lester hoped to position this brand extension as
an upscale furniture concept that would be more classic and less fashion–forward than Pottery

Production of oil in the land of Israel/Palestine created a need for storing the finished products. Huge pottery operations emerged in order to infiltrate
foreign markets all over the Mediterranean basin with beautiful Greek artistry (Oxford Handbook of Engineering, "Ceramic Production"). The Greeks
saw a cultural vacuum to influence Persian society and they ran with it. 3. A Lekythos in the Ancient World A lekythos (plural: lekythoi) is a
container for oil, ointments, and were sometimes used as offerings for the dead (Folsom, Handbook of Greek Pottery, 175). How did this object
come to be? A potter must start with an idea. The shape of the object was good for the careful pouring required when dealing with oil. In starting to
fashion this idea, the potter first must grab a large ball of clay and lift up the edges to make the body. Next, the potter places the clay on a pottery
wheel and, using various tools, the potter is able to scrape the base and other areas in order to add ridges. The neck is created through a small ball
of clay that's then ripped apart to form a hollow neck and mouth at the top. The potter will flatten the rim and turn the neck to get rid of excess clay.
Next, the potter will attach the neck to an open hole on top of t the body. He will then use a sort of place–holder in order to make sure it is applied
straight–on. Lastly, the handle will be added. The potter will elongate a pear–shaped piece of clay into a handle with a

Reflection Essay : ' Rent 's Due Art Boy '
Reflection journal Essay
Sculpture, the thing I never knew I was good at. Two semesters ago I met a very strong woman, and she opened up a part of me that I had mostly
given up on. The part of me I had given up on over a decade ago was my artistic side. I simply felt that it was a waste of time to spend hours
perfecting something that would most likely never make me money. Also, I would look at the multitude of staving artists online, and consider how
much better they were than myself, and how even the most talented artist starves from time to time. Have you ever heard the phrase "rent's due art
boy". Well I got tired of hearing it, and went to drafting school. It wasn't until this last semester, in my 19th century art history course, that I learned
that most of my favorite artists started out as draftsmen, but we will talk about that later. Until recently, I had forgotten that i actually enjoyed the
peacefulness of the artistic process. I had forgotten that during this process I tended to become very focussed and all of my life's daily problems
seemed to fade away. I met my art teacher Alicja Mannix in mysculpture class, and wasn't sure how well I would do. She was from Poland, and still
had her European accent intact. Her accent reminded me of my Grandmother Tesse, on my step mother's side. She was also from poland. Anyways, the
closest thing I had done to sculpture in my life was a few pottery items at my local Boys Club in Portland, Oregon. I had made a

My Experience At High School
High school is one of those times in life where most people have the best times of their lives, but for me I just wanted to get through it. Coming in
freshman year I was done with the cattiness of the girls, the social pressures, and the monotony of school. Then I discovered the joy of ceramics!
Ceramics was unlike any class I had taken in my entire life and had far reaching effects on my life. Ceramics kept me in high school by sparking my
creativity and all of life's possibilities. In high school I found joy in ceramics, found out what it was to no longer practice, and what it was like to start
doing it again after thirteen years.
Freshman year of high school I decided I was done with the large group of friends I spent my grade school days with due to the various lacking
values I saw in my "friends". With the determination I wanted to radically change life as I had known it, I decided to surround myself with those with
similar interests. While I continued through my high school education I continued taking ceramics classes, learning how to hand build, throw, and
various other techniques. Being able to take a lump of clay and throwing it on a wheel to evolve into a beautiful work of art satisfied my desire to
morph myself into something more than what I was. Over four years my skills built up to amassing a collection of pieces I was very proud of. The
only looming issue with my new found passion was that graduating would mean I would no longer have the resources to

Richard Fairbanks' and Takeshi Yasuda's Ceramics Essay
Richard Fairbanks' and Takeshi Yasuda's Ceramics Richard Fairbanks, although many times overlooked, was an important American ceramist. He was
known as a "loner" and because of this he was never really appreciated for his talent. Fairbanks was greatly influence by his professors. Professor Paul
Bonifas, who taught at the University of Washington, was one who left a huge impact on Fairbanks work. Fairbanks created a system of sketching
pottery profiles, which stemmed from Bonifas' teachings, as a mean of "thinking on paper." This approach to pottery through sketching was a crucial
element that separated Fairbanks from many other Asian–inspired American peers. Although, Fairbanks was a wheel thrown expert, he continued to

Instead of purist forms, Fairbanks explored the less traveled road of rough and crusty clay bodies, which emerge, from the surface of the glaze.
This in turn removed his pieces from any realm of perfection. In the end Fairbanks demonstrated, trough his pieces, the p [positive and negative
approaches that he was exposed to during his years. Fairbanks wrote, "My eyes are lazy and don't see well. With my hands I se, and that is good. I
can hold the whole world in my hands when I am seeing with them a good pot. Then there is the earth: dense and heard, yet at one time it grew,
expanded and breathed; there like seed to stalk to flower to fruit, it patiently endured the potters tactile search. The clay speaks softly but firmly to
the potter, it is not afraid because it will always have the last word, even if it must atomize itself to return again and seeks its destiny anew in
another's hands. My hands see the clay and the clay murmurs to them take it easy, you're in good hands. The dialogue continues long after the brief
communication when the hands and the clay see each other, they know. They know." This statement was said to take great poignancy because of the
last two years of his life. Fairbanks was diagnosed with malignant brain tumor, which created little to no studio activity. As his disease progressed,
Fairbanks lost more and more eyesight. This passage softly

Around the interior rim there is a vegetative design contained with in two rims, concentric to each other as well as to both the shape of the bowl and

Both of these details have the most variation in value and line, while the background of the illustration is drawn mostly with contours. The clouds are
reduced to thick, expressive lines that refer to the thickness and energy of the calligraphy on the outer sides of the bowl. A sun or moon is drawn

IMPORTED TRADITIONAL POTTERY: METHODS OF OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGES FOR TRADITIONAL CERAMICS INDUSTRIES
IN OMAN
DR. BADAR MOHAMMED ALMAMARI
Department of Art Education,
Sultan Qaboos University, Oman
Introduction
In the new global economy, the development of traditional ceramics industries has become a central issue for individual ceramicists and craft
enterprises alike. In Oman, over the past decade the Public Authority for Crafts Industries (PACI) has played a strong role in supporting the traditional
ceramics industry. However, recently, competition from importedpottery and the negative impacts on local markets has become a pressing issue. The
purpose of this paper is to address the ways in which individual Omani ceramicists and traditional pottery enterprises can successfully compete against
imported ceramics.
Imported Ceramics
Nearly two–thirds of ceramic tableware in Oman now comes from abroad (PACI, 2016). Although extensive studies have been conducted into crafts
consumption and marketing, very limited research has sufficiently explored competition from imported ceramics and its negative impact on local
markets. Exploring the threat of imported pottery for local traditional craftspeople would seem to link clearly to the subject of protecting local
ceramicists. Therefore, it is impossible to study this issue and contribute to this area of research without examining the challenges that the Omani craft
industry is facing in general.

Play Doh Essay
Clay is a certain type of ground, created by weathered and deposited rocks. When sent to sell, minerals and other problematic things are removed. On
the other hand, sand may be added perfect it. Clay used to create art is called modeling clay. Modeling clay may be used for pottery or just plain
sculpting. To continue, there are actually many types of clay than just "regular." Types of clay include polymer, air dry, oil based, water based, and
ceramic clays. In my experiment I will be using Play–Doh and air–dry clay. Many characteristics contribute to the creation and structure of Play–Doh.
These main ingredients include water and salt. The salt dissolves most of the water in clay, so it doesn't make the clay too spongy. This modeling
dough is composed of water, starch–based binder, salt, lubricant, surfactant, preservative, hardener, humectant, fragrance, food coloring, and wheat.
Water, starch–based binder, and salt create the clay itself. The rest of the ingredients help the mixture, adding specific characteristics. Lubricant,
preservative, and humectant helps make the dough stay fresh. Hardener obviously allows the clay to stay solid without getting slushy again. Fragrance
and food coloring adds to the clay itself, making it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, as clay begins to dry the piece will shrink because of the water evaporating. The particles inside will compact together as it hardens. If the
drying is considered "uneven", for example one part dries faster than the other, the clay might crack. If one clay's particle sizes are smaller than
another's, it will shrink more. This is because all the small particles are now far apart so they have to cover more space in order to make up for all
the missing spots. However, large particles can cover spaces easily since they have less open areas to cover. To conclude, both clays may be similar
yet can take different amounts of time to harden due to their

The Neolithic Era, Or New Stone Age
AR6_SA_U1_L11_LC
Introduction and Objective
The Neolithic Era, or New Stone Age, was a period in the development of human technology. Traditionally considered the last part of the Stone Age, the
Neolithic commenced with the beginning of farming. Metal tools became widespread, along with the use of wild and domestic crops and of
domesticated animals.
When people think of pottery, they might think of bowls and cups, of eating and drinking. But pottery can, in fact, be art as well. During the Neolithic
Era, most of this pottery was hand built. These red, gray, and black wares often revealed a craftsmanship and beauty exceptional for their age.
http://mrg.bz/Tt8E3p
Of course, clay isn't exactly glamorous. Once the crafting of bronze, lacquer, and precious metals were mastered, the ritual status afforded ceramics
declined. Soon after, ceramic shapes began to imitate those of metal almost as soon as the latter appeared.
There are four main types of Neolithic pottery:
Neolithic soft ware
Djeitun ware
Ismailabad ware
Burnished gray ware
Let's explore these forms of Neolithic ceramics and how they defined the art of the time period.
Today's lesson objective is: The student will learn about Neolithic ceramics.
Take a moment to think about this objective. What learning skills will you use to achieve this goal? Why do you think pottery was so important to
the Neolithic artists? Do you think pottery is more of a useful tool or an art form? How do you think the Cave

Eric Serratella Sassy Pottery
Pottery is an ancient form of art created by people as early as 29,000 BC. The Gravettian "Venus" figurines (appendix A) are the earliest discovered
ceramic works, dating from 29,000 BC to 25,000 BC (Carr, 2015). Since then ceramics have significantly evolved, and the pots created today can be
described as interesting and unique masterpieces. An example of one of these masterpieces is "Sassy Birch" (appendix B), which is a teapot created
by Eric Serratella (appendix C). Eric Serritella received primary applied art training from two artist residencies studying with Ah Leon and clay

Ceramics Of The North And South Coasts Essay

  • 1. Ceramics of the North and South Coasts Essay Ceramics of the North and South Coasts Ancient Peruvian Ceramics of the North Coast March 11, 1997 The first pottery pieces found in Peru were made somewhere between 1500 and 1000 b.p. The pieces were found in the central Andean region where a religious cult lived. This cult was called ChavГn, after the best known ceremonial center, ChavГn de HuГЎntar. The religious center was the home to massive temples that were highly embellished with low relief sculptures of gods, animals, and symbols. The pottery found in the area where vessels that were well made and highly decorated with a similar motif as the temples. But the evolution of Peruvian pottery becomes somewhat confusing and complex after this first civilization of potters. There ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Three other cultures in north coast valleys contributed their pottery style to the over all Cusisnique style that was evolving into the Mochica style. These people were the Gallinazo, Recuay, and VicГєs. The Gallinazo constructed double chamber vessels with whistle spouts and a type of decoration called negative decoration where they painted their simple designs on after the pieces were fired. The Recuay also had double chamber vessels but these had one functioning spout and one sculpted, usually an animal or figure. They also used negative decoration but theirs were much more elaborate designs than the Gallinazo vessels. The VicГєs lived in the highlands on the Ecuadorian border. They made very sculptural vessels with a stirrup handle and central spout. Although a hand full of VicГєs artifacts have been found, not much is known about these people, but one can see a visible connection between all of these different cultures and the Mochica style that evolved out of them. The Mochica civilization flourished for nearly 1000 years and as time passed slight changes in the style could be seen and are chronologically separated into Mochica I–V. The first two are formative phases with lots of experimentation. The third concentrated on a distinctive art style, which continued through the forth and gradually declined in the fifth. They expressed many aspects of their culture and daily life in their ceramics. Things like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Personal Narrative: My Midwestern Diagramic Career As a self–taught potter, I have been working with clay for nearly 2 years. I make primarily functional wares fired to cone 10(2345В°f) using porcelain or stoneware clay. I obtained a degree in political science from Winona State University in 2015. I am highly influenced by my experiences as a production potter, other midwestern ceramic artists, and my rural/military upbringing. After graduating college, I promptly moved to Minneapolis, MN and started what was meant to be a temporary position making coasters for Dock 6 Pottery owned by Kerry Brooks. Urged by my potter/co–worker Johnne Law McMahan, I began to throw pots after work just to get a sense of what a day in the life of my co–workers (production potters) was like. It turned out I ... • 3. Terracotta Skyphos The first work I studied is the Terracotta Skyphos. It is a cup from early imperial time. It belongs to the Roman culture. It was made at Tarsus in Cilia. It is from Cyprus. The cup is made out of Terracotta, which is a clay–like substance. It is fired clay that can that is durable and strong. It can be molded into any shape. In Italian terracotta means "baked earth." Making a terracotta sculpture is quick, simple, and cheap. This cup was lead glazed; the shape of the cup represents the Hellenistic period. It's a fancy work, decorated with plants and flowers. The plants look like it is popping out. It resembles the repousse technique. The cup has a rough texture and the way the light hits it almost looks dark in some areas. On the display it... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Art encourages me to look at the world differently. The statue makes me think of how people were portrayed in the imperial period. The story behind the copy of the original statue of Barberini Suppliant is compelling. It is of a young woman who has been taken advantage of. It is a bold work of art. The original is more detailed and draws more attention then the one I analyzed but both works show and portray different stories. I believe that they made minor changes to the copy but leaving out the body of the woman made it mysterious and hard to analyze. Greek art had a major influence on Roman art and I see elements within these two works. These two works of art emphasized the importance of details. Without details there is a lack of meaning. Without looking at the original work I would not know how to analyze the copy. It looks like a completely different work of art. These two works of art have less in common than I thought. They come from the same time period but they are used and looked at in different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Ware : Practical Vessel Kenzan Ware: Practical Vessel A section dedicated to the art of "chanoyu", meaning "hot water for tea" in Japanese, and also known as tea ceremony is located in the "Asia: Paintings and Decorative Arts" room at the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts. Within a glass case, there are four objects on display, signifying few of the many vessels used for a tea ceremony. Many of them were created during or near a same time frame: Edo period, Japan, which spans from 1615 to 1868. One of them is a tea bowl with a unique, almost modern looking design given a descriptive title called, "Tea Bowl with Spring Grasses" created during the 18th century in Japan. Unlike its companion in the same case, a Satsuma black glazed tea bowl made of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kenzan learned pottery from famous Nonomura Ninsei who established "Kyo–yaki", Kyoto Pottery, in mid 17th century. Kenzan opened his kiln when he was 37 years old in 1699 in Narutaki, Kyoto where he created many artistic ceramics "Kenzan–yaki". His brother, Korin, often collaborated Kenzan on decoration of pottery and created innovative artworks together (Wilson). While the raku (meaning enjoyment, comfort, or ease) ware is commonly used when creating tea bowls, Kenzan avoided this technique due to having a cousin who adopted into the Raku family (Wilson). So rather than using the hand molded approach that is often used for objects later to be used in a tea ceremony, he decided to use his own methods and approach that still fitted the aesthetics of the tea ceremony. The bowl, which was treated like a three–dimensional canvas, is distinctive to Kenzan's background in painting and calligraphy. He formed the clay into a smooth, consistently shaped vessel. Then after the lid is formed, the two parts would be checked together to see if the size of the lid is too large or small to cover the bowl. As it remained unfired, he later applied the decoration with a similar approach to a painter. In order to imitate the effect of brushwork on absorbent paper, he applied colored pigments underneath a transparent glaze (Wilson). Kenzan first started on the white background, painting a wave like shape reminiscent of mountains in the far distance behind the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Josiah Wedgewood's Life And Work Josiah Wedgewood (1730–1795) Potter, Craftsman, Entrepreneur His early contribution was a process of making "creamware" which was more refined and cheaper and local than the preferred luxury alternatives. He was a friend and later business partner with Thomas Bently who connected him into the luxury ceramics market. After securing work for the Queen of England at the time Wedgewood was able to create the popular Queensware products of ceramics. This caused him to look at expanding and reimagining his manufacturing process. He created a new process that saved time and ensured uniformity and high quality in his products. Batch Production was a division of labor that used small standardized shapes of all his products and used mold over potters wheels to make his ceramics. Adam Smith (1725–1790) Economist... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His views became popular because of his pin factory analogy which described the process. In it, he mentions the division of labor which he praised for its efficiency. The Americans used Adam Smith's principles to allow for specialization in their machine operations. This benefit of dividing the labor allowed the fabrication of more complicated products and items with interchangeable parts Frederick Taylor (18–1915) Engineer Frederick Taylor was an engineer who ran experiments in the 1880's on the common manufacturing process of his time. His goal was to increase the productivity of the workers. The experiments measured the time to perform different tasks. He created recommendations for the workplace that became business standards and were enforced in the workplace. Businesses used these as a measure of productivity and rewarded wages and other rewards on a basis of performance. These changes created a shift in the workplace and a demand for higher compliance became the norm. Taylor helped create the need for standards in the workplace. Henry Ford (1863–1947) ... • 6. Conical Hat Definition The thoughts about ceramic shape's history gave me a ground to be able to create the Conical Hat series works, and the investigation of conical hat provides the depth of my work. However, it still has lots of space for my personal concepts and understandings in this series of work. According to those studies on object and shapes, my central idea can be concluded into just one word which is "container". I view the Conical Hat series are containers. Then, what is the container? Container is a Middle English word. It comes from contain with –er. It is a noun which means anything that contains or can contain according to The Macquarie Dictionary. In The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, container appears as a word under the explanation of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beyond to describe different kinds of containers, the act to be a container can mean something else and worth to think about it. Being a container can be seen as taking the role of protection, storage or transportation. Different container can have different roles. It gives container a character that can be classified. Besides, from the other side of this idea, after a container been found, the act afterwards also be assigned. It is like when you found a jar, what you put in it will give the jar its value. Or like, you give different values to the same jar than other people did to it. According to the analysis of container, there are two levels of how my Conical Hat series links to the concept of the container. First, conical hat is a kind of container. Second, conical hat is a container of emotion. Conical hat is the container is the direct connection. From geometric sense, conical hat is a hollow cone shape, which enables it could contain something in it. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Results This lab will record the growth process of embryo rescue in a hormone–free media. The results on the percentages of attempts that resulted in the isolation of an intact embryo was 33%. This is due to the fact that this was the first time that I performed an embryo rescue, and made a few mistakes along the way. The first mistake that occurred was that I cut too deep into the endosperm, and cut into the embryo itself (a few times). Another mistake that was made was that I found it hard to cut into the seeds while using the forceps, without losing the seed. The percentage of intact embryos that developed into a plant was 33%, meaning the only one out of the three sprouted. The changes that occurs during the progression from dormant embryo to active growth is that the crown becomes a reddish color, which is that is appeared on most Wayfaringtree Viburnum. The red crown is due to the flavonoids that are apparent in the molecular structure. Since Wayfaringtree Viburnum has to go through the cold stratification to break dormancy, the mechanism practice that would have to take place would have to be a type of refrigeration or freezing process. This process is done for 8–10 weeks of holding temperature of 4В° C. These orthodox seed will be placed in a refrigerator to break dormancy, and will continue to have continuous ... • 8. Taking a Look at Shino Glazes Shino Glazes Shinos are traditional Japanese glazes that have high feldspar and clay content, and can produce a range of color and texture depending highly on application and firing. The main colorant in shino glazes are the iron oxide impurities contained in various clays. Historical Information Shino originated in the Mino region of Japan during the Momoyama period (1573–1615 A.D.) and was discovered in an attempt to recreate a white feldspathic glaze brought from China that belonged to the shogun Shino Soshin (1444–1523 A.D). The ceramic aesthetic of the time was largely created by tea masters for Buddhist tea ceremonies. The first shino attempts were most likely the result of removing iron and iron rich clays from temmoku, and the resulting glaze named for the Shogun; a celebrated tea master. Contemporary glaze developments of the period also included seto and oribe. The Momoyama period marked the end of internal wars and final unification of Japan. Japan and Europe came into contact for the first time, while trade flourished and encouraged social mobility. Mino and neighboring seto are of particular interest because they are the only areas that produced glazed ceramics in the medieval period, and invented an improved kiln design; a variation of the Korean anagama, the ogama. The most important features were a side entrance and domed main chamber that created a partial downdraft, producing a more even and efficient firing than previously possible. Traditional ... When visiting the McKissick Museum I was engrossed by the American Folk Art, ceramic Face Jugs, also known as ugly or grotesque jugs. There are gaps in the history in regards to how the face jugs were made, what they were used for, and the meaning of the face vessel pottery. However it is believed that these vessels were original, useful, creative expressions of the African slave culture of the time created as early as the seventeenth century. Few artists of face jugs have been identified and their inspirations for producing the vessels are not completely known. According to Hirst, it is believed that this art form originated in Edgefield County South Carolina, from African slaves who worked on the plantations as potters. They worked on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Face Jugs have become more imaginative and peculiar as they became marketable. Today, either you love them or hate them. I personally find these jugs intriguing. There is a mystery surrounding them which make them extremely interesting to me. Because South Carolina is a big tourists attraction face jugs have attracted the attention of tourists. Replications of face jugs are made for tourists. They are not used as much for functional use today, as they are more of a decorative or aesthetic art form. The jugs come in all shapes and sizes with a variety of facial features and expressions. Many of the faces that I like have a symmetrical balance which, throughout this course, has caught my attention. The glaze used makes the face jugs shiny and smooth. Ceramic Face Jugs are different, unique, mysterious, and good conversational pieces. In summation, face jugs are representations of folk art by African–American slaves. • 10. Caesarea Maritima Essay The site of Caesarea Maritima contains many unique challenges for archaeological excavations. In spite of this, through pottery analysis, archaeologists are able to learn about different aspects of the site. Nonetheless, Caesarea Maritima has a variety of specific challenges associated with it for archaeologists. Not only does it cover a significant section of the coastal region, but the immense harbour, over time, has been completely submerged in the sea. Along with geographical challenges, there are also historical ones. The site of Caesarea Maritima was inhabited from Hellenistic time until the Crusaders, a period spanning over 900 years. As it was continuously inhabited, the archaeological layers contain the remnants of many different cultures.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the site of Tell el–Hesi, Petrie noticed specific styles of pottery at different stages of the dig (Petrie 1890). By a comparison of the different pottery forms with similar pieces dated from previous sites, Petrie was able to date the surrounding material through the pottery. Significantly, by studying the pottery forms, Petrie created an association between specific dates and forms of pottery (Petrie 1891) thus created a chronology which revolutionised the archaeology of the Levant. To give an illustration of the impact which Petrie's discovery has had upon archaeology in the Levant, his chronology has been used on archaeological sites in the region throughout the past century (Cole 1984; Tushingham 1986). In Caesarea Maritima Petrie's discovery of dating a site through the pottery has assisted with dating both the city and the harbour of Sebastos. In the harbour, the discovery of pottery was interpreted as evidence that the city was importing goods via sea trade, during the 3rd century AD (Hohlfelder 1988). While excavating Caesarea Maritima the Department of Antiquities in Israel discovered that an area they were excavating was abandoned during the Arab conquest (Yeivin 1955, p. 123). Yet, because there was evidence of pottery from the eighth and ninth centuries in addition to some lamps, it was evidence that after the site had been abandoned it was resettled. Because of the discovery of Mameluke pottery, it became apparent that the site was superceded during the Crusader period (Yeivin 1955, p. 123). Craft specialization is an indicator of societies becoming more complex. Stone bead–making and pottery are both different types of craft specialization which indicate that the early of cities and villages of the Harappan period have become more aware of society and economy. In Kenoyer, Vidale, and Bhan's "Contemporary stone bead–making in Khambat, India," the stone beadmaking industry is studied and described as "important for supporting the state," (Kenoyer, Vidale, Bhan 1991). This occupational specialization let to the development of an organized social structure that was closely monitored. Although there are many references to multiple craft specializations at different sites, this article focuses on craft specialization that appears to be identified with highly ranked societies. The fact that some scholars associate craft specialization with these highly ranked societies is incorrect because in all societies technology was important and required individuals to be able to produce items efficiently. "The ability to create specific and efficient technology requires specialization which is a sign of economic and social adaptions," (Rice 1984). Craft specialization was an adaptive process because the ability to gather raw materials and produce special objects required a high level of competence and ability to work together. These individuals had to learn how to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This paper will explore two examples of Greek pottery and explain their uses and what is seen on them and why. The first vessel is a red figure bell krater, from around 380 BC, attributed to artist known as the Erbach painter. Typically red figure style deals with scenes of everyday life rather than myth, this pot differs from this as it does contain myth but rather than depicting the action from a mythological tale, it portrays a general scene of the Greek god, of wine drama and fertility, Dionysus. Like the other, it is a red figure bell krater featuring Dionysus. To the right we see a satyr playing the flute. The satyr could be one of the Titiyroi classes of satyr as he shares many of the main characteristics of them, such as the flute and his tail. To the left of Dionysus stands a woman holding a wine jug (oinchoe). It is hard to tell who this woman is, as there are many possibilities. She could be a maenad for the reason that maenads show up in a lot of artwork with Dionysus. However this would not be a normal showing of a maenad. Maenads are usually seen holding a thyros, wearing a wreath of ivy, holding a musical instrument or wearing some kind of animal print. This woman could be Ariadne, the wife of Dionysus. In Greek artwork, Ariadne is often seen with Dionysus. Both pots share a similar artistic style and depict Dionysus in a very comparable way. The slight differences that you do see between them could be because of the time difference between each work. Nevertheless both vessels depict Dionysus in the usual way. A Lekythos in the Ancient World A lekythos (plural: lekythoi) is a container for oil, ointments, and were sometimes used as offerings for the dead (Folsom, Handbook of Greek Pottery, 175). How did this object come to be? A potter must start with an idea. The shape of the object was good for the careful pouring required when dealing with oil. In starting to fashion this idea, the potter first must grab a large ball of clay and lift up the edges to make the body. Next, the potter places the clay on a pottery wheel and, using various tools, the potter is able to scrape the base and other areas in order to add ridges. The neck is created through a small ball of clay that's then ripped apart to form a hollow neck and mouth at the top. The potter will flatten the rim and turn the neck to get rid of excess clay. Next, the potter will attach the neck to an open hole on top of t the body. He will then use a sort of place–holder in order to make sure it is applied straight–on. Lastly, the handle will be added. Two semesters ago I met a very strong woman, and she opened up a part of me that I had mostly given up on. The part of me I had given up on over a decade ago was my artistic side. I simply felt that it was a waste of time to spend hours perfecting something that would most likely never make me money. Also, I would look at the multitude of staving artists online, and consider how much better they were than myself, and how even the most talented artist starves from time to time. The bowl is on display in Gallery 453 – Iran and Central Asia (9th – 13 th centuries) in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is 14 inches in diameter and stands 4 1/4 inches high. It is earthenware, a ceramic vessel fired from 900–1200В° centigrade. It has been treated with a white and polychrome slip, a surface treatment that suspends the vessel in water while the clay is in the leather–hard stage. Most likely the slip was used to change the color of the brown or red earthenware clay to white, and also to seal the earthenware's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Around the interior rim there is a vegetative design contained with in two rims, concentric to each other as well as to both the shape of the bowl and the rim around the illustration in the center of the bowl. The emphasis of the drawing is on the two figures's clothing and the vegetation on the rim. Both of these details have the most variation in value and line, while the background of the illustration is drawn mostly with contours. The clouds are reduced to thick, expressive lines that refer to the thickness and energy of the calligraphy on the outer sides of the bowl. A sun or moon is drawn above the boy and woman's heads in a linear style as well. The calligraphy seems as though it was painted, rather than written, though refers more directly to the actual Chinese characters than the Arabic inscription does to Arabic characters on the Islamic bowl. The brush strokes are visible, expressive, and dynamic. In many ways the writing has much more character and intensity than the carefully drawn illustration at the interior center of the ... • 34. Traditional Pottery : Methods Of Overcoming The Challenges... IMPORTED TRADITIONAL POTTERY: METHODS OF OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGES FOR TRADITIONAL CERAMICS INDUSTRIES IN OMAN DR. BADAR MOHAMMED ALMAMARI Department of Art Education, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman Introduction In the new global economy, the development of traditional ceramics industries has become a central issue for individual ceramicists and craft enterprises alike. In Oman, over the past decade the Public Authority for Crafts Industries (PACI) has played a strong role in supporting the traditional ceramics industry. However, recently, competition from importedpottery and the negative impacts on local markets has become a pressing issue. The purpose of this paper is to address the ways in which individual Omani ceramicists and traditional pottery enterprises can successfully compete against imported ceramics. Imported Ceramics Nearly two–thirds of ceramic tableware in Oman now comes from abroad (PACI, 2016). Although extensive studies have been conducted into crafts consumption and marketing, very limited research has sufficiently explored competition from imported ceramics and its negative impact on local markets. Exploring the threat of imported pottery for local traditional craftspeople would seem to link clearly to the subject of protecting local ceramicists. Therefore, it is impossible to study this issue and contribute to this area of research without examining the challenges that the Omani craft industry is facing in general. Today, modern factories

  • 36. Play Doh Essay Clay is a certain type of ground, created by weathered and deposited rocks. When sent to sell, minerals and other problematic things are removed. On the other hand, sand may be added perfect it. Clay used to create art is called modeling clay. Modeling clay may be used for pottery or just plain sculpting. To continue, there are actually many types of clay than just "regular." Types of clay include polymer, air dry, oil based, water based, and ceramic clays. In my experiment I will be using Play–Doh and air–dry clay. Many characteristics contribute to the creation and structure of Play–Doh. These main ingredients include water and salt. The salt dissolves most of the water in clay, so it doesn't make the clay too spongy. This modeling dough is composed of water, starch–based binder, salt, lubricant, surfactant, preservative, hardener, humectant, fragrance, food coloring, and wheat. Water, starch–based binder, and salt create the clay itself. The rest of the ingredients help the mixture, adding specific characteristics. Lubricant, preservative, and humectant helps make the dough stay fresh. Hardener obviously allows the clay to stay solid without getting slushy again. Fragrance and food coloring adds to the clay itself, making it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, as clay begins to dry the piece will shrink because of the water evaporating. The particles inside will compact together as it hardens. If the drying is considered "uneven", for example one part dries faster than the other, the clay might crack. If one clay's particle sizes are smaller than another's, it will shrink more. This is because all the small particles are now far apart so they have to cover more space in order to make up for all the missing spots. However, large particles can cover spaces easily since they have less open areas to cover. To conclude, both clays may be similar yet can take different amounts of time to harden due to their ... • 39. The Neolithic Era, Or New Stone Age AR6_SA_U1_L11_LC Introduction and Objective The Neolithic Era, or New Stone Age, was a period in the development of human technology. Traditionally considered the last part of the Stone Age, the Neolithic commenced with the beginning of farming. Metal tools became widespread, along with the use of wild and domestic crops and of domesticated animals. When people think of pottery, they might think of bowls and cups, of eating and drinking. But pottery can, in fact, be art as well. During the Neolithic Era, most of this pottery was hand built. These red, gray, and black wares often revealed a craftsmanship and beauty exceptional for their age. http://mrg.bz/Tt8E3p Of course, clay isn't exactly glamorous. Once the crafting of bronze, lacquer, and precious metals were mastered, the ritual status afforded ceramics declined. Soon after, ceramic shapes began to imitate those of metal almost as soon as the latter appeared. There are four main types of Neolithic pottery: Neolithic soft ware Djeitun ware Ismailabad ware Burnished gray ware Let's explore these forms of Neolithic ceramics and how they defined the art of the time period. Today's lesson objective is: The student will learn about Neolithic ceramics.

  • 41. Radiometric Dating Essay Issues with dating techniques Most experts cannot agree as to when exactly Sahul was colonized. Most of this debate stems from how accurate the various dating methods are, when aging archaeological evidence. One method that proves beneficial to items such as pottery is known as thermoluminescence. This is a type of procedure is used when determining the age of sedimentary crystals (Webb, 1998:749). Another technique for dating is known as radiometric dating, or 14C. Unfortunately, this technique is considered unreliable when dating objects greater than 40,000 years (Allen, 2001:952; O' Connell and Allen, 2004:837). Upon first glance I deemed this to be a red clay vessel, but after further familiarizing myself with the artist's work it became clear that this was bronze, based on comparable material use in other still life examples. Because of the Netherlands regional location within Europe, bronze was plentiful and valuable. In multiple examples of Jean–Michel Picart's still lifes the bronze vase is used to display a full bouquet of flowers. Often, these vessels were detailed with unique patterns engraved on the exterior portion of the vase. In this example, the vase is decorated with natural motifs of vines and leaves which are mimicked in the floral arrangement it holds. At the time of production, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Gravettian "Venus" figurines (appendix A) are the earliest discovered ceramic works, dating from 29,000 BC to 25,000 BC (Carr, 2015). Since then ceramics have significantly evolved, and the pots created today can be described as interesting and unique masterpieces. An example of one of these masterpieces is "Sassy Birch" (appendix B), which is a teapot created by Eric Serratella (appendix C).
