Observe many cells and organisms
such as:
• Rotifers
• Bacteria
• Sperm cells
• Blood cells
A Dutch Scientist that state
that cell is a unit of life
Henri Dutrochet (1776-1847)
a French physiologist who
suggested that the cell is not
just only a structural unit of life
but also a physiological one.
• Poposed that all animals is
composed of cells and product of
cells.
• He even proposed that both
animals and plants are governed
by the same fundamental
principles of cells.
Matthias Jakob Schleiden
• proposed that all plants are
made up of cells .
• Suggest that the cells were
formed due to crystallization
rather than crystallization
Rudolf Virchow and Robert
Remak
• Cells arise from pre-
existing cells through cell
division.
• Omnis cellula e cellula
• “All cells come from cells”
• Every cell is born of a previous
cell, which was born of a
previous cell.
Cell Theory
Cell is the smallest
entity that exibits
the characteristics
of life.
1. Reproduction
• Cells produce new
cells of the same
kind through cell
division.
2. Development
• Overtime a multitude of cell
divisions will change an
organism’s form from simple to
a complex one.
3. Movement
• To better interact with its
environment and have a higher
chance of surviving, a cell must
be able to change its physical
position
4. Responsiveness
• Cells react
accordingly when
they encounter other
organisms or objects.
5. Metabolism
• Cell utilize the energy that they
obtain from their diet for daily
activities.
• Forms of energy are assimilated by
cells and transformed into other
forms for use by the cell of
neighboring tissues.
6. Homeostasis
• A cell can maintain a stable
internal environment in the face
of changing external conditions.
It achieves this by creatin a
feedback loop, which is a
reaction to any disturbance or
perturbation in the cell’s bodily
functions that restores the latter
to it’s original state.
7. Organization
• A cell is made up of smaller
units called organelles.
8. Presence of Genes
• All life forms contain information
in the form of genes that allow
them to pass on their physical
traits to their offspring.
9. Evolution
• Cells with better adaptations
with respect to their
environment will have a higher
chance of surviving.
Cell Theory
1. All organisms are made up of cells
• Protobiont-first cell which look
like a bacterial cell
• Archaea, bacteria and eukarya
2. The cell is the basic structural and
functional unit of life
• Physiological
• Biochemical
• Genetic
• And other functions
3. All cells arise from pre-existing cells
• Mitosis
• Cell division
• Meiosis
• Energy flow within the cells
• Inside the cell, there are lot of biochemical
reactions that regularly take place. When chemical
bonds get broken inside the cell energy is
produced. Meanwhile, chemical bond formation
uses up energy.
Modern Interpretation of Cell Theory
2. Cells contain genetic material that can be
passed on.
• All cells have a certain genetic materials, which can either be
DNA or RNA or both. These genetic materials are self-replicating
and are essential in cell-division. They contain genetic
information that drives the functions of entire cell and ultimately,
the organism
Modern Interpretation of Cell Theory
3. The activity of an organism depends on
the activity of each individual, independent
cell.
• Movement, metabolism and division.
• The cells in each type of tissue are
functionally related but posses a certain
degree of independence.
Modern Interpretation of Cell Theory
4. The genetic makeup of the cells of
organisms that belong to the same species
is the same.
• All organisms belonging to the same species
have cells that are structurally and
physiologically similar.
Modern Interpretation of Cell Theory
Any
questions?
About Cells
• Who are the proponents of
cell theory?
• Give at least 5 functions of
the cell that is shown
through characteristics of
life.
• What is the importance of
understanding the cell
theory?
Create an infographic that can show
the timeline of formulating the cell
theory. Make it creative and
informative
