The Industrial Revolution Of Maryland By Lewis W. Hine And...
Following the end of the American Civil war, the Industrial Revolution came rushing in and brought
with it tremendous changes the mechanization of agriculture, the invention of steam and electricity
used machinery led to mass production factories, and the emergence of a massive railroad system.
Change in the economy and society brought great wealthto the United States. Consequently, it was a
giant magnet for immigrations. However, the distribution of wealth across the population was not
even. The American working class in the last half of nineteenth century suffered from povertyand
oppression. Several documentations and stories were written in response to the people suffering.
Two of them Child Labor in The Canning Industry of Maryland by Lewis W. Hine and Maggie: A
Girl of The Streets by Stephen Cranevividly described the living and working conditions for the
working poor. In the period of 1860 1900, the majority of the working class, including native born
and immigrants, clustered in two largest industrial areas: the North East industrial cities and the
West agriculture farms. In the West, agricultures were dominated by land and railroad companies.
Although the farming industry grew simultaneously, workers life did not improve. In fact, they
faced many hardships such as severe oppression from their owners, unfair payment for their work,
and serious lack of education for their children. In his 1909 report, Lewis H. Hine revealed the
harsh working condition

Summary Of Mr. Memory, Hunger Of Memory By Richard Rodriguez
Before I got engaged in writing on a constant and more personal level, a level from which I can
boost my skills, I oftentimes misunderstood the mere purpose of writing. In the beginning of my
academic childhood, I, similar to many children, was introduced to literature from an angle that
was related to my academic progess. I was given the idea that you write in order to satisfy the
teacher and receive a grade. Therefore, my understanding of writingwould continuously be that of a
common learning skill that would assist me in becoming a standard citizen in the future who was
taught the correct placement of an adverb in a sentence. Richard Rodriguez, in `Mr. Secrets, Hunger
of MemoryВґ, stated that Writing, at any rate, was a skill I didn t regard... Show more content on

I focus harder on wondering why Rodriguez decided to become a writer, then I actually do reading
the context of the book. Rodriguez, revealing his comfortability with strange audiences, states
that This is what I have learned by trying to write this book: There are things so deeply personal
that the can be revealed only to strangers (Rodriguez, 200). From my viewpoint of Hunger of
Memory, it is evident that Rodriguez shares that contentment with strangers because the content
of the book was so personal that they can only be said to someone who is not close. Someone
you don t know (Rodriguez, 200). But I m also adamant in trusting that he is an Author because
he has acquired the necessary aptitudes in becoming an Author. Certainly, the skills do not have a
bearing on the physical characteristics. After reading a group of imposingly structured sentences,
I look back at the image of the once young man who worded these words and I, again,
unsuccessfully, compare the words with the face. These skills are, must be, derived from his
passion for sharing personal literature to the public. Because he loves it, he does it. Consequently,
he becomes good at it. This is the meaning of

Identity Contingencies
This paper will explore the world of stereotypes that are put on certain races or groups known as
Stereotype threat and identity contingencies. The author shows numerous experiments on a broad
spectrum from testing ability and physical activities when stereotype threats are and aren t present
and how that affects people s ability to perform. It will bring to light the way people feel when
identity contingencies are present in a society, along with the consequences. Stopping the issue
completely is going to be difficult, but there are ways to reduce the risk and improve the situation.
Already, in today s society improvements can be seen compared to when the issues were first
recognized.
Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do Identity contingency affect a
lot more people than you would imagine and in a number of ways. Claude M. Steele proved this
in his book Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do by providing
numerous tests that show just how much they affect a person and their ability to perform. This
book brings to light the hardships that are faced by identity contingencies and how they can be
fixed.

Reliability and Validity
Reliability and Validity Dede Kendrick BSHS/382 January 16, 2012 Angela Heads Reliability and
Validity Evaluating human services is a task that can be very complex. People can have different
interpretations of the same event. Another concern is that people are not always honest. Therefore,
human services will gain from effective, high quality evaluations of data collection methods. This
requires that the data collection methods supply accurate and dependable information. This paper
will define and describe 2 concepts of measurement known as reliability and validity, provide
examples and supporting facts as to how these concepts apply to data collection in human services,

When multiple people are given assessments of some kind or are the subjects of some test, then
similar people under the same circumstances should lead to scores that are similar or duplicates (
Types Of Reliability , 2011). This is the idea of inter rater reliability. Another mode of reliability
is the administration of the same test among different participants and expecting the same or
similar results ( Types Of Reliability , 2011). This is known as Test retest reliability. This method
of measurement might be used to make determinations about the effectiveness of a school exam or
personality test ( Types Of Reliability , 2011). Surveys and other methods of research present the
appropriate avenues for data collection. Data collection and measurement methods are used in
human services to help organizations achieve leadership capacity and to achieve high performance
outcomes. Agencies that track the effectiveness of their services through field studies and surveys
will have a record of techniques that have worked best to fulfill mission goals. The evidence of
such reported facts will come in handy in terms of funding, policy efforts, and keeping
professionals educated. From psychological and behavioral aspects, interviews, test groups, and
random assignment are just a few ways to collect data in controlled and uncontrolled environments.
Human services use these methods to apply theory to real life situations. Human services depends

Where The Wild Things Are Again Analysis
Since the dawn of time, humans have learned to communicate through certain writings or
stories. Many individuals have benefitted from the gift of reading that we take so much for
granted these days. The hunger for knowledge is a basic human instinct that has took place and
influenced many people s lives, including mine. But I ask myself these questions. Is knowledge
reading, or is reading knowledge? Can reading influence your life choices? Well here I am,
thinking back on my childhood clouded by parental disputes and my adventure as a reader and
how it has influenced my life today. My reading experiences as a child up to the present have had
a great influence on me. My goal in this paper is to take you through a journey of my experiences...

My family moved just about every other year, which made my life full of new experiences and
adventure! Which brings me to my next memorable reading experience. My dad introduced me
to a series that was important to him and his childhood. My Grandpa read him the same series as
he went to bed and my father wanted to pass on the tradition as I will to my children as well. My
all time favorite book series has remained The Lord of the Rings since my father read it to me on
one of the few nights he had off work. That series really spoke to me as a child who spent his
whole life moving places and experiencing new things. I felt like Bilbo taking his first step
outside of Hobbiton, not knowing anything of what mysterious new wonders or terrors awaited
his company. At the time I was moving to Colorado from the middle of nowhere in New York.
When Bilbo was on his journey to the Lonely Mountain it really spoke to me personally since I
was starting my journey to a state full of some of the most rigid, marvelous mountains you ll ever
see. I finished the book with my dad on the way to colorado and I wanted more. The adventure
excited me more than anything else ever had. I loved the thrill of not knowing what was ahead and
not turning back. Walking into a strange new place, full of strange new people can be thrilling yet
terrifying. I had become accustomed to it. Adventure was my

Essay on Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock
Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock
A running theme that is presented to the audience in Psycho is the opposition that exists between
good and evil. This is shown throughout the movie among the different characters. Examples can
also be taken from conflicts within the characters. Certain conflicts and how the characters deal
with them and each other are what shape the structure of the movie. The perception that the
audience receives of the characters change throughout the movie by the different conflicts that arise.
These conflicts show the audience many sides of good and evil portrayed by the different characters.
One of the first impressions of evil in this movie is the character Tom Cassidy. His character is an

At this point the audience is drawn towards Marion s flight. They want her to succeed. Her goals
have become the viewers goals. With Marion, the audience loses all power of rational control,
and discovers how easily a normal person can lapse into a condition usually associated with
neurosis. After her encounter with the cop, Marion quickly loses her ability to think rationally.
She starts to imagine conversations, and knows that Sam will never accept the money. This fact
itself shows that her sense of logic is gone. A rationally thinking person would have realized that
she would never get away with the crime. As Marion drives on into darkness rain begins to fall
heavily. The viewers begin to feel as Marion does, hopeless and weary. Her endless journey takes a
turn due to an illumination on the side of the road.
Marion exits her car at the Bates motel and finds a deserted office. She then turns to discover a
large Transylvanian type house on the hill above the motel. A shadow is seen walking past an
upstairs window, then a young man is then seen running down the stairs to greet her. He introduces
himself as the proprietor of the motel, Norman Bates. As he is checking her in the two begin to
converse. Norman finds out that Marion is very hungry. He offers to fix her dinner in the kitchen
of the house on the hill. He shows her to her room and tells her to make herself comfortable. He
said he would return once dinner was done. As

Women In The 1800 s
In the early 1800 s, many of the women in the United States were coming to realize that they
wanted to obtain more rights. The male gender had way more rights than women, and they had
run more things than women. Finally, women began to come forward to voice their opinions
about how men and women are made to be equal; no less, no more. It was now time for women to
go out and pursue whatever they wanted to pursue and not have to worry about the fact that they
are females or that they are weaker or have less education than a man. The Seneca Falls
Convention would soon be one of the biggest victories for women s rights. The Seneca Falls
Convention of 1848 was the first women s rights convention in American history. This convention

The Indians were forced to leave their homes and even families to move to the west, which is
now known as Oklahoma. The trail was not a specific road, trail, route, or river that was

Some of the Indians traveled upriver on steamboats, and some of the Indians even got into large
caravans that carried wagons full of their belongings and labor animals. A majority of the Indians
traveled through Arkansas to arrive in Oklahoma. Other Indian tribes and regular people would
leave food, supplies and firewood along the way to help the Indians on their treacherous journey
to the west. Not only was the route a long one, but the weather was very harsh. It was often
freezing in the winter and very dry and boiling during the summer. This led to a high mortality rate
in the Indian tribes because the weather was so harsh. Additionally, many of the Indians did not

To discover is to gain sight or knowledge of something. How have ideas about discovery been

into themselves and others. This is evident in Michael Gow s Away, as seen through the characters
of Gwen, Coral and Tom. The three gainsight and knowledge into their lives through the different
perceptions and ideas of discovery. Similarly, in The Book Thief, Liesel gains sight and knowledge

As a result of Gwen s upbringing in the depression, she consequently places a false value upon
materialistic goods. At the night of the play, Gwen asks Meg Why did you have to do Shakespeare
for? We couldn t see a blessed thing . Through her dialogue in relation to the Shakespearean
allusion, this displays that Gwen resists the emotional depth that Shakespeare represents, and that
she is metaphorically blind. Once Gwen discovers the knowledge about Tom s condition, she gains
sight, and is no longer metaphorically blind to reality. Through her sight, she realizes that family is
more important than placing a false value on materialistic goods. This idea of discovery has been
explored through relationships and events which significantly impacted on her new found
knowledge and sight.
Tom, the agent for change gains sight and knowledge into the acceptance of his impending death.
The opening of the play starts with the ending of A Midsummer Night s Dream where Tom as
Puck says Gentles, do not reprehend. If you pardon, we will mend. This foreshadows Tom s
healing role in the play. Although Tom seems to be the character in the least need of a discovery,
he still gains sight into the reality of his condition and knowledge that he needs to accept this. This
is evident through reading King Lear. The scene is set outside, as instructed by

Chinese History And American History
I have been studying Chinese history for a long time, but the interesting phenomenon is in 5000
year history of China, there is only one formal empress called Wu Zetian, and the amounts of
emperors are four hundred and eight. The percentage of women to be a leader of China is 0.25%.
Nowadays, Hilary Clinton has been reported by all the newspaper and TV shows, because she is
the only woman who has possibility to be the first femalepresident. Comparing Chinese history and
American history, it is rare to see that the women become the decision maker of the country. Also
there is an article points that
Studies show that women in the United States often face doubts about their leadership and are
judged more harshly than men. Alice Eagly, who teaches management and psychology at
Northwestern University, points to studies showing that female college presidents and police chiefs
face additional criticism when they fail. (1)
After looking at these information, there are some questions suddenly popped in my head about
women in leadership. Why women have lower percentage of being a leader than man? Can women
achieve true equality?
Depending on the research, of all the people in parliament in the world, 13 percent are women. In
the corporate sector, women at the top, C level jobs, board seats tops out at 15, 16 percent. The
numbers have not moved since 2002 and are going in the wrong direction. (2) This information
shows that women are having hard time to achieve parity with

The Marxist And Postcolonial Lenses
There are a million ways to read a story, a million perspectives to choose from, a million lenses to
closely examine every carefully written word. When taking on a reading persona, when looking
through one of these lenses, the story can be seen in a light completely alien to what is shown on
the surface. One can see the story through the eyes of the famous communist politician Karl
Marx, the psychologist Sigmund Freud, or even the feminist Susan B. Anthony. With each of
these perspectives comes a set of important analytical questions that break the story apart and
delve deeper into the author s true meaning. One such author famous for hiding a deeper
meaning beneath the surface of his stories is Ernest Hemingway. By analyzing literature through
the Marxist and Postcolonial lenses, one can see Hemingway s inner thoughts about how people
view and interact with each other, on both a classist and racist level. The Marxist standpoint is
known to illuminate the struggles and tensions of different social classes in literature. In
Hemingway s A Cat in the Rain , the main character is on a lavish vacation in a foreign country,

Falling Down

Once upon a time, in a land far away a french fry named Garrett was taking a stroll. He was going

went downhill. I was headed to Kerens chicken tender box otherwise known as her house. I m a

He was so fearful he afraid of his own shadow. And to add to that he s very small and fragile. We

why is it raining in a carpet?
I replied I have no clue why this happening.

Gender Roles In The Sun Also Rises Robert Cohn
Gender Translation During the post war modernism era writers portray the gender compound in
interesting and unique ways. The book follows a group of Americans as they travel around Europe
soon after World War One. In Ernest Hemingway s masterpiece The Sun Also Rises the narrator,
Jake Barnes, and the other main character s gendercharacterization is unique in that the main
character s gender traits juxtapose each other throughout the novel. Jake Barnes masculinity shifts
multiple times throughout the novel. Even after he had an accident that leads all the women to
believe he is impotent (Hemingway, 120). After Jake was almost literally emasculated during the
war, he gets into fights with Robert Cohn trying to prove... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cohn is a notorious American writer but he still shows his insecurity. One of the reasons for his
insecurity is that Cohn is one of the few men in the story who is revealed to not be a veteran of
the war. Cohn also experienced a lot of racial discrimination as a Jew when he went to Princeton
(Hemingway, 12). To compensate for his self consciousness, he became the middleweight boxing
champion of Princeton (Hemingway, 11). Despite his athletic achievements, Cohn is still portrayed
as feminine. His first wife left him before he could leave her and the next woman he had a
relationship with was very forceful and she treated Cohn as a careless possession (Hemingway,
13). The woman, whose name is Frances, took advantage of Cohn s insecurities and she used them
to dominate, not letting him look at another woman (Hemingway, 13). Cohn s weakness for women
causes him to nearly kill Romero in a fistfight. Jealous of Romero after [Lady Ashley] told [Cohn]
off, Cohn attacked Romero (Hemingway, 204). Cohn After dominating Romero in the fight, he fails
to sustain the dominance when he attempts to shake Romero s hand and as a result, the bull fighter
chap hit [Cohn] in the face (Hemingway, 205). Cohn then started crying and telling [Lady Ashley]
how much he loved her (Hemingway, 205). Cohn s fails to display masculinity throughout the novel

Under the cheque truncation, the clearing of cheques are focused around the image and Magnetic

Essay On Macbeth s Loyalty To A Green Heart
Illustrated with a green heart, you can see Macbeth s first aspect of his character being loyalty.
In the beginning of the play, Macbeth tells how he feels about king Duncan by stating that the
service and the loyalty I owe in doing it pays itself (Act 1, scene 4). Macbeth most certainly had a
heart and loads of compassion to the ones he was close to. At the start, he may have even been the
only person to express such loyalty to the king. Just like fresh grown trees, Macbethstill had that
clean mindset and that goodness in his heart. Therefore coming into the play, Macbeth is introduced
as a green, healthy heart.
Consequently, Macbeth s ambition for power turned him into a greedy man which is shown as
a yellow crown. Wanting even more, Macbeth says the Prince of Cumberland! That is a step On
which I must fall down, or else o erleap, For in my way it lies (Act 1, scene 4, lines 55 57). After
all that Macbeth has gone through, he only had the crown in mind now. He was made Prince of
Cumberland by the king that he showed his loyalty to. But at this point of the play, the crown was
the only thing for him. The power of a king was more than anything. Greedy Macbeth falls into this
trap, and now the green fades to yellow. This mello unsatisfying color is what Macbeth turns ...

of maintaining his ambition, and that made him just get rid of them like it was nothing. His one
long time friend was just an obstacle to get over, so that he could keep on striving for the power
that was more important than his close ones. Red is that perfect reflection of how crazy and just
evil Macbeth has become. Macbeth is that red dagger that kills those in his

An Analysis of Personality Theory
An Analysis of Personality Theory by for Everyone has a personality, of course, but until fairly
recently, there were no personality theories available to help understand what factors contribute to
its development. In recent years, though, personality theories such as McCrae and Costa s Big
Five and Schwartz s theory of basic values have been advanced for these purposes. To gain some
deeper insights into these issues, this paper presents a review of the relevant peer reviewed and
scholarly literature to provide a definition of personality and an examination of theoretical
approaches to studying personality. Finally, an analysis of those factors that may influence an
individual s personality development is followed by a summary of the research and important
findings concerning personality theory in the conclusion. Review and Analysis Definition of
Personality An individual s personality is comprised of several factors, some of which may be more
prominent at some times than others. The dictionary entry personality defines it as, the complex of
characteristics that distinguishes an individual or a nation or group; especially the totality of an
individual s behavioral and emotional characteristics (Merriam Webster, 2001, p. 1687). In this
regard, Barrick and Mount (1999) advise that, Personality may to advantage be broadly analyzed
into five distinguishable but separate factors, namely intellect, character, temperament, disposition
and temper (p. 2). Examination of

Example Of A Femme Fatale
A femme fatale, a French term for fatal woman (Schimkowitz, 2014), is a strong willed,
manipulative woman who is as alluring as she is dangerous. She is an irresistibly attractive woman
who leads a man into difficult and dangerous situations with her seductive charms (Blakely, 2014).
They used to be physically characterized as fierce sexing looking women with sharp eyeliners. This
female archetype has been in existence since ancient times all around the world.
The first example of a femme fatale in this paper is Veda Pierce (Ann Blyth) in Mildred Pierce,
which was released in 1945, when many American soldiers returned from World War II. During
the WWII period, women were the main providers for their families while American men were
at war, which led to increase independent American women. Mildred Pierce, the mother of Veda,
is one of the strong women who is working hard to support herself and her children. In contrast to
her mother s effort, Veda takes advantage of her mother s kindness and money. She also betrays
her by having an affair with Monte Beragon, who is already married to her mother. Veda has the
looks and knows how to use her looks to attract men. And she is so ambitious that she does
anything in order to get the most important thing to her which is money to live the high class life.
Ultimately, a femme fatale leads the male into ruin. Veda fulfills this characteristic of the femme
fatale by shooting Monte to death when he denies that he is going to marry her.

The Impact Of Political Change On Russia
How significant was war in bringing about political change in Russia in the year 1856 1964?
War had a huge political impact on Russia from 1856 to 1964, but it was not the only factor that
brought about political change. Political change was influenced by many aspects. A big part of
what brought about political change was the different wars that took place which included; The
Crimean war of 1853, The Russo Japanese war of 1904 and lastly the First World War that began
in 1914. These Wars were all significant in motivating political change for Russiafrom the years
1856 to 1964, but again they cannot be seen as the only factor which had led to a political turning
point. Reforming leaders such as Alexander II, Nicholas II, Stalin and Khrushchev all played
significantly big roles in also bringing about some political change for Russia. Although events
such as War and the acts of leaders did accelerate political change for Russia, we must not forget the
impact that Revolutionary movements such as the Murder of Alexander II and the Bolsheviks
revolution had.
The Crimean war of 1853 1856 was fought at Crimean Peninsula, where Russia was fighting
mainly against Britain, France and the Ottoman Empire. The war was known as a long bloody
war, as a result of poor organisation, leadership and communication of both Russia and the allies.

Symbolism In The City Of Ember
Throughout a book, many authors use a symbol or object to help readers find the deeper meaning
in a story. Jeanne Duprau , the author of The City of Ember emphasizes darkness vs the light
throughout the whole book. The author does this because the symbols hidden in the story, has a
huge impact and role throughout it. In the story, the author uses both symbols lightand darkness.
The light represents life and hope for another world, while the darkness symbolizes fear and death.
In the book, The City of Ember, the author uses the symbol light to show life and hope for another
world. Specifically, the text declares, She longed to have colored pencils for her pictures of the

The Essential Function Of The Lymphatic System In The...
The lymphatic system is a system made up of tissues and organs, located inside and throughout the
human body. The essential function of the lymphatic system is to keep fluid balance by
transporting lymph, a fluid containing white blood cells, and depositing them into the blood stream.
The lymphatic system helps the body get rid of waste, toxins and other undesirable substances.
The lymphatic system can be looked at as a waste system required in the human body. This waste
system performs a specific circulation to keep the bodily fluids balanced. As blood flows through the
human body, blood plasma spills in the tissues through the narrow walls of the capillaries. The part
of the blood plasma that leaves is known as extracellular or interstitial fluid. Extracellular fluid
contains amino acids, oxygen, glucose and different supplements required by tissue cells. Although
the vast majority of this fluid leaks instantly over into the blood stream, a level of it, alongside the
particulate matter, is left out. The lymphatic system expels this fluid and these materials from
tissues, returning them through the lymphatic vessels to the blood stream, hence keeping a fluid
imbalance that results in the organism s death.
The lymphatic system contains lymph nodes that are tiny glands placed all throughout the human
body. Lymph nodes produce red blood cells and stores cells that fight infections also known as
white blood cells. There are about 600 700 lymph nodes in the human body. Some can

Frank Lloyd Wright Falling Water Essay
Silsbee enjoyed designing buildings that were inspired by the Victorian movement. Thus, his
buildings were very narrow and tall with an asymmetrical house design. Wright enjoyed
designing buildings that were more progressive with low pitched roofs and an open floor plan.
He described his own work as gracefully picturesque compared to the other brutalities of his time.
In 1888, Wright began working for the Adler and Sullivan firm. The firm was looking for
someone to finish the drawings for the inside of an Auditorium Building. Wright was quickly
chosen for the job and soon became an apprentice in the firm. However, while working at this firm,

Once Wright heard this, he grew offended and threatened to leave the project if his drawings weren

Outline on Celiac Disease in the U.S
1.Introduction
Celiac Disease is a digestive condition that makes the small intestines to become inflamed and
unable to absorb nutrients (Kamycheva, Goto, Camargo 2017). The condition affects more than 3
million Americans. One in 133 American people are known to have the disease. The condition is
triggered when an individual eats gluten. Mostly gluten is found in barley, wheat, rye, and other
grains that most Americans love to eat. What if you couldn t eat sandwiches, pasta, cakes, pies,
pizza? Sound terrible, right? This has been my life for 10 years now.
2.Symptoms and causes
Celiac disease is different from other food allergies. Celiac disease is where the small intestine is
diseased. A person with celiac accidentally consumes something with gluten will be more likely to
have intestinal problems such as constipation, gas, and diarrhea (Liu, Dong, BarГіn, Taki, Norris,

opened doors for scientists to better understand the use of gene therapy for humans. Genetics is
now playing an important role in curing, monitoring, and diagnosing diseases that can make
someone very sick. With gene therapy it can save lives and help cure the world of its deadly
diseases. Genetics Home Reference states, Hundreds of research studies (clinical trials) are
under way to test gene therapy as a treatment for genetic conditions, cancer, and HIV/AIDS

A woman as fanciful and dreamy as this in such a position is not going to survive.
As we continue to read this novella we must notice the governess wild and unnecessary use of
elaborate adjectives to describe the simplest of things. Her style of writing in itself is quite
romantic and poetic, full of metaphors and oxymorons. However sometimes her choice of
words is so prompting we must take a closer look into perhaps a double or triple meaning. When
she first sights the ghost of Peter Quint on top of the house she is able to describe his position
with amazing precision in note of the fact she was some distance from him and her sighting was
quite brief. She comments he stood at an angle, tall and erect... he fixed me with a hard gaze and
when yet again she confides in Mrs Grouse she gives a very elaborate description commenting on
his tight red curls, pale face, long in shape, small tiny whickers, darker arched eyebrows and the
fact that he had no hat . The governess even uses phrases such as the intercourse of our
conversation added to the intensity of our meeting in description of everyday things such as normal
conversation. The governess certainly has deeper meaning behind most of her words.
The last and most important point in regards to the governess repressed sexual desires is her highly
inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour with both her pupils, in particular Miles. There is a
constant underlying power struggle between the two. The

Arguments For Self Identification
A different argument for self identification comes from an old social norm developed during the
era of slavery known as the one drop rule. This rule states that a multiracial person is assigned to
the race with the lowest social standing among the races represented. Going off of previous
history and other social norms, the hierarchy would be as follows: non Hispanic white, Asian,
Latinos, and lastly black. When forcing a youth to choose between one of their multiple races,
those with some black or Latino heritage are far more likely to report being black or Latino than
those with white or Asian heritage are to report being white or Asian (Herman 2009). Herman s
study in 2009 examines the difference in grades between students of mixed races. Her ultimate
conclusion is that self identification is the main indicating factor in academic achievement.
Students possessing black or Latino ancestry are associated with decreased grades whereas
students with white or Asian ancestry tend to do better. However, she also looked at the difference
in grades between students of the same biracial category who self identify differently. Those who
identify as Asian or white do significantly better in school than those who identify as black or
Latino. An interesting conclusion from the study shows that where there is a difference between
those who identify as Asian and those who identify as white, there is almost no difference in if the
student identifies as black or Latino. In an attempt to

Interestingly, both companies started as food based and moved to provide other services over
time. This is perhaps why the companies have a passion for serving quality food, since it is in
their roots. This is common in the fast food industry, and Sheetz and Wawa have taken this service

Causes Of Power Corrupts
The Power Magnet
Award winning author David Brin once stated, It is said that power corrupts, but actually it s more
true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power.
In a perfect world there would be no corruption or lust for power; however, humans are not perfect,
therefore, mistakes are made and many crave money, pleasures, and power causing them to lose
sight of what truly matter. Throughout the history of our existence, there have been instances of
corruption for various reasons. Some cases include the terror of Maximilien Robespierre amid
revolutionary France, the recent American Olympic scandal at the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics,
and the ascension of the narcissistic rapper Kanye West.
While corruption isn t always the reason for gaining power, it can become the reason why certain
actions are taken to maintain that new power. Initially, Maximilien Robespierre was a French
revolutionary who supported the people despite being a bourgeoisie, commonly seen as an enemy
of the oppressed. Once the revolution gained control of the French monarchy, Robespierre let his
greed and ambition take hold of him. He devised the plan to behead former King Louis XVI in
order to assure the success of the revolution. Robespierre let this new power overcome him resulting
in the shelving of the Constitution so he could pursue the elimination of all suspects against the
Republic, allowing him to legally capture and kill almost anyone.

Willy Wonka: Confectioner or Pedophile Empty space eventually fills up with something. A void,
cultivated in the aftermath of misfortune, begins to attract the wrong kind of attention. Rahma
Krambo, Guardian Cats and the Lost Books of Alexandria It can be inferred from modern
technology and studies that maltreatment during childhood can lead to detrimental effects such as
depression as well as impaired cognitive and socio emotional skills. This is true with distinguished
individuals like Ludwig van Beethoven and Eleanor Roosevelt. Ludwig van Beethoven suffered
through years of abuse from an alcoholic father and managed to overcome his burdens, adapt to his
restrictions, and fill the void left from his mother dying at such an early age by creating beautiful
music. In the same way, Eleanor Roosevelt dealt with an alcoholic father who, in turn, forced her
into feeling at fault for being a victim of his abuse. Against all odds, Eleanor rose above the cruelty
that she faced and surrounded herself with literature and politics where she could release the
smothering thoughts that would follow. Though some outcomes of abuse cases have the ability to
turn into inspirational testimonies, many are not as favorable. About one third of parents who have
previously been abused in their childhood will continue the trend of torment onto their children (1).

Hot Topic Essay
1. What makes Hot Topic so successful as a retailer? What makes them so popular with their
employees? How can they keep their success going? Hot Topic as a retailer is so successful
because their culture is based on a passion for a concept (Manning Curtis, 2015, p. 281). They
focus on what is hot at the moment and use people s passion for music as their driving force.
Having employees at an average age of 25 years, helps keep the store and its products young and
hip. Employees of Hot Topic are very loyal to the company because they are treated very well and

adequate ideas and solutions for the company. This helps them to constantly stay on top of the
latest trends because ideas are freely flowing from their employees, who are in the same age
bracket of their intended market. This is actually quite smart of the company because they are
able to get ideas on what the store needs without having to pay for them. I most definitely would
love to work in such an atmosphere. The idea of an open communication system is very
appealing and the fact that it comes with perks makes it even more alluring. I am sure everyone

Dramatic irony is when the audience or reader knows the words and actions of the characters in
a work of literature, but certain characters in the story do not know them. The reader or audience
has a greater knowledge of many of the characters themselves. Shakespeare employs dramatic
irony in many of his tragedies; so that the audience is engaged, and so they are able to witness
characters errors in their action, predict the fate of the characters, and experience feelings of
tragedy and grief. As a tragedy, Hamletdeals with the problems that arise as a result of Hamlet s
attempt to avenge his father s death. Throughout the play Hamlet is on the search of his self, while

His intellectual powers are of the highest order. (Kittredge, 18)
The irony found in the characterization of the antagonist is balanced by an equal irony in the
presentation of the protagonist. Hamlet is present at the court gathering dressed in black, the
color of mourning, for his deceased father. He is not a man of the world, but rather protesting
and thoughtful and by himself. His first words say that Claudius is A little more than kin and
less than kind, indicating a dissimilarity in values between the new king and himself, thus, in a
sense, demoting himself to the position of an outcast, one who counts for nothing. At this point
Hamlet is disoriented and does not know who he really is; he is beginning to lose his sanity.
And, incredibly, he is the greatest of people, in terms of what really matters in life one s spiritual
ideals or morals. He is combating himself because he is attempting to do what is right for
Denmark but before everyone s eyes he is evil. This outcast is a prince; he is a genius. His
speeches confront problems which most easily besets men of genius (Coleridge, 345). His first
soliloquy illustrate his idealism by emphasizing the worthlessness of the corrupt world and the
frailty of women, which contribute to his raging madness,

Han leaders preferred to gift the Xiongu with extravagant gifts to persuade them from taking Han

revolutionize China s foreign relations and trade economy. Wu set up colonies to force the Xiongu

The Help: A Discussion of Reality Kathryn Stockett s The Help is a novel set in 1960s Jackson,
Mississippi and follows the lives of two black maids, Minny and Aibileen, and a privileged young
white woman, Eugenia Skeeter Phelan. Together these three women set out to compile a book
explaining how it is to work as a black maid in Jackson. While some critics argue The Help
perpetuates black stereotypes and confines black women into Mammy roles, the novel actually
promotes discussion of racial issues faced in the 1960 by black maids in a realistic manner
without confining black women to a racist role. One of the novel s most common criticisms is the

In fact the character with the most noticeable change is Minny. At the beginning of the novel,
Minny is closed off, in constant fear of losing her job and stuck in an abusive marriage. Even
when she decides to help Skeeter with her book, Minny remains guarded and almost reluctant to
tell her everything. Yet, at the end of the novel, Minny not only is noticeably relaxed around
Skeeter, but even offers her life advice such as running her white butt to New York when Skeeter
gets offered her dream job (Stockett 499). Minny also leaves her abusive husband, Leroy, after a
particular volatile attack that leaves her standing barefoot and [at] rock bottom [at] the gas
station, when she realizes that for the first time in her life, she has a secure job, Leroy s once
needed support is now gone, and that she has the potential to be so much more than an abused
wife (515). Minny Jackson is the pinnacle of development among the three narrators of the novel,
and yet ABWH claims Skeeter is the main character. Another example is Aibileen, who at the
beginning feels she does not have much left to offer in her older age, claims in the final few lines
that maybe it is not too late to start anew (522). If The Help really is a coming of age story about
Skeeter, then this revelation of Aibileen s would not be the last thought

What? Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano located near the bay of Naples in Italy (at the convergent

(Cashdollar et al. 1982) A Plinian eruption, also known as a Vesuvian eruption, is an eruption
marked by columns of gas and volcanic ash extending high into the atmosphere, as well as a large
amount of pumice and very continuous gas blast eruptions. A pyroclastic flow is one of the most
dangerous forces released by an erupting volcano. A column of hot gas and ash is thrown into the
air and collapses under its own weight. It then roars down the side of the volcano, obliterating
everything in its path. (Watson 2011) The collapse of the gases in the pyroclastic flow was
divided into several surges, and it is believed that surges 4 and 5 destroyed Pompeii. Pompeii,
along with Herculaneum, was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 meters of ash and pumice.

Importance As we know now, Pompeii was buried although not completely destroyed by the
powerful eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Today, the buried buildings of the ancient city have been
uncovered and have survived to show us in amazing detail what town life was like under Roman
rule, and because of this, the discovery of Pompeii is of huge importance for our understanding of
the Roman world. When the pyroclastic flow enveloped Pompeii, its inhabitants were buried along
with their city. Ash solidified around their bodies that eventually rotted away, leaving behind human

Native Ancestors Practice Cannibalism For Ritual Purposes...
Our prehistoric ancestors practiced cannibalism not because of cultural expectations, but for
survival. Our oldest taboo has been the source of many debates, with researchers having different
ideas about why our ancestors would partake in such a barbaric activity. Evidence of this practice
can be found throughout the world, but in some cases the reasons differ. This presents a difficult
question to be answered, did our prehistoric ancestors practice cannibalismfor ritual purposes or for
survival? In one of the sites where humanremains were found to have been cannibalised was
14,700 years ago in Gough s Cave. Biological anthropologist Silvia Bello and her colleagues have
used microscopic analyses to confirm that at least six people were dismembered and eaten.
Human bite marks were found along the ribs and other bones and evidence also shows that tools
were used to obtain marrow. It is one of the most well known archaeological examples of
cannibalism being used by our ancestors. The time period in which these remains existed was
when England s climate was becoming colder than usual, thus killing of prey and plants. Therefore,
the search for food made the hunter gatherer s of this time period desperate for food (Bower).
Author and scholar specializing in paleoanthropology Carole Henikoff breaks down the question of
why our ancestors practiced cannibalism even further by asking, Do our emotional and physical
reactions to incoming stimuli reflect instinct or

upon a third party seller. Samsung Galaxy is always a great line of products that everyone is
waiting for every year since it always brings the latest innovating technologies. The new phone
will be equipped with very good resolution and an exceedingly powerful processor to run any
applications smoothly. Recording 4K video and mobile gaming will also see vast
improvements. The phone will run on the latest Android software (Android Nougat) with many
new features (Reisinger D, 2016). Therefore, this product is already shaping up to be very
expensive to own. The previous product was the Samsung Galaxy S7, and it costs over $600
dollars. The Galaxy S8 may cost higher since it will have a better battery and more RAM (random
access memory) to satisfy consumers. It does not matter how good a phone can be if the battery
cannot keep up with it. Every mobile manufacturer has invested in improving the battery for their
products so consumers can enjoy more.
The Galaxy S8 also needs to keep up with Apple iPhone upgrades every year. Apple also comes
out a new iPhone every year to compete with other mobile brands. In 2017, Virtual Reality is very
popular because many gaming console manufacturers such as Sony and Microsoft has been heavily
focused on making virtual reality games for consumers. Samsung mobile has been introducing its

Essay on The Doctrine of the Mean in Aristotles Politics
The Doctrine of the Mean in Aristotle s Politics.
Examining the texts of Aristotle s Nicomachean Ethics and Politics side by side, one is bound to
find parallels between his reasoning with regard to the individual and to the state. In Nicomachean
Ethics Aristotle discusses happiness, virtue, and the good life on an individual level and lays out
necessary provisions for the good life of a person. He maintains that virtue is a necessary element
of happiness: a man will be happy if he has virtues of justice, courage, and temperance, each
constituting a balance between the extremes. But this requirement of virtue for the happy life goes
beyond the individual level, as we see it in Politics . There, ... Show more content on

Therefore, the mean relative to us is not one, and is not the same for everyone .
With respect to this, Aristotle states that virtue seeks the mean relative to us, and this is how each
science produces its product well : by focusing on what is intermediate and making the product
conform to that. A well made product will be that to which nothing can be added or taken away
without making it worse, since it assumes that excess or deficiency ruins a good result, while the
mean preserves it. And just like good craftsmen focus on an intermediate when they produce a
product, one should aim at intermediate in regard to virtue.
Thus we see that virtue is to be achieved by concentrating on the optimal mean between the
extremes of deficiency and excess. But the discussion of virtue would be incomplete if one did
not investigate its role with respect to the object possessing virtue and its effect on that object.
Since Aristotle defines virtue as a state that decides the optimal mean relative to us, he asserts
that every virtue causes its possessors to be in a good state and to perform their functions well;
the virtue of eyes, e.g., makes the eyes and their functioning excellent, because it makes us see
well , and this is argued to be true in the case of all objects. At this point, the role of virtue with
respect to the object is apparent: something will be functioning at the best level only if it reaches an

Victoria s Influence On Tom Luis Luis De Victoria
The 16th century was a time of the Spanish Inquisition, which reigned for almost 400 years,
forcing those who weren t Catholic to convert to Catholicism (Koeller). Catholicism was a major
influence in all aspects of Spanish life at that time, ranging from music to art and daily living.
Being a 16th century composer, TomГЎs Luis De Victoria was greatly influenced by the Catholic
Church. Most, if not all of his music consisted of sacred pieces (Ferris). He was a Spanish
polyphonic composer whose specialty was in motets. Not only was he one of the greatest
composers and musicians of his time, he was also a scholar, a mystic, and a priest.
Victoria was born in 1548 in SanchidriГЎn, Spain, a province of Avila, Castile to father, Francisco
Luis de Victoria and mother, Francisca SuГЎrez de la Concha. Victoria was seventh of eleven
children who were born into a family already leading vast and successful careers. Three of his male
cousins (on his mother s side) achieved success by being a naval commander, a pioneer in Mexico,
and a merchant in Florence. The merchant married Grand Duke Cosimo I de Medici s sister in law
and was ennobled. The uncle on Victoria s father s side, who he was named after, was a lawyer
who pleaded cases before the royal chancery at Valladolid (a city in north central Spain) and was
later a priest. His other uncle on his father s side was also a priest (Stevenson).

Following the end of the American Civil war, the Industrial Revolution came rushing in and brought with it tremendous changes the mechanization of agriculture, the invention of steam and electricity used machinery led to mass production factories, and the emergence of a massive railroad system. Change in the economy and society brought great wealthto the United States. Consequently, it was a giant magnet for immigrations. However, the distribution of wealth across the population was not even. The American working class in the last half of nineteenth century suffered from povertyand oppression. Several documentations and stories were written in response to the people suffering. Two of them Child Labor in The Canning Industry of Maryland by Lewis W. Hine and Maggie: A Girl of The Streets by Stephen Cranevividly described the living and working conditions for the working poor. In the period of 1860 1900, the majority of the working class, including native born and immigrants, clustered in two largest industrial areas: the North East industrial cities and the West agriculture farms. In the West, agricultures were dominated by land and railroad companies. Although the farming industry grew simultaneously, workers life did not improve. • 4. Summary Of Mr. Memory, Hunger Of Memory By Richard Rodriguez Before I got engaged in writing on a constant and more personal level, a level from which I can boost my skills, I oftentimes misunderstood the mere purpose of writing. In the beginning of my academic childhood, I, similar to many children, was introduced to literature from an angle that was related to my academic progess. I was given the idea that you write in order to satisfy the teacher and receive a grade. Therefore, my understanding of writingwould continuously be that of a common learning skill that would assist me in becoming a standard citizen in the future who was taught the correct placement of an adverb in a sentence. Richard Rodriguez, in `Mr. Secrets, Hunger of MemoryВґ, stated that Writing, at any rate, was a skill I didn t regard... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I focus harder on wondering why Rodriguez decided to become a writer, then I actually do reading the context of the book. Rodriguez, revealing his comfortability with strange audiences, states that This is what I have learned by trying to write this book: There are things so deeply personal that the can be revealed only to strangers (Rodriguez, 200). From my viewpoint of Hunger of Memory, it is evident that Rodriguez shares that contentment with strangers because the content of the book was so personal that they can only be said to someone who is not close. Someone you don t know (Rodriguez, 200). But I m also adamant in trusting that he is an Author because he has acquired the necessary aptitudes in becoming an Author. Certainly, the skills do not have a bearing on the physical characteristics. After reading a group of imposingly structured sentences, I look back at the image of the once young man who worded these words and I, again, unsuccessfully, compare the words with the face. These skills are, must be, derived from his passion for sharing personal literature to the public. Because he loves it, he does it. Consequently, he becomes good at it. This is the meaning of ... The hunger for knowledge is a basic human instinct that has took place and influenced many people s lives, including mine. But I ask myself these questions. Is knowledge reading, or is reading knowledge? Can reading influence your life choices? Well here I am, thinking back on my childhood clouded by parental disputes and my adventure as a reader and how it has influenced my life today. Which brings me to my next memorable reading experience. My dad introduced me to a series that was important to him and his childhood. My Grandpa read him the same series as he went to bed and my father wanted to pass on the tradition as I will to my children as well. My all time favorite book series has remained The Lord of the Rings since my father read it to me on one of the few nights he had off work. That series really spoke to me as a child who spent his whole life moving places and experiencing new things. I felt like Bilbo taking his first step outside of Hobbiton, not knowing anything of what mysterious new wonders or terrors awaited his company. At the time I was moving to Colorado from the middle of nowhere in New York. When Bilbo was on his journey to the Lonely Mountain it really spoke to me personally since I was starting my journey to a state full of some of the most rigid, marvelous mountains you ll ever see. I finished the book with my dad on the way to colorado and I wanted more. The adventure excited me more than anything else ever had. Her goals have become the viewers goals. With Marion, the audience loses all power of rational control, and discovers how easily a normal person can lapse into a condition usually associated with neurosis. After her encounter with the cop, Marion quickly loses her ability to think rationally. She starts to imagine conversations, and knows that Sam will never accept the money. This fact itself shows that her sense of logic is gone. A rationally thinking person would have realized that she would never get away with the crime. As Marion drives on into darkness rain begins to fall heavily. The viewers begin to feel as Marion does, hopeless and weary. Her endless journey takes a turn due to an illumination on the side of the road. Marion exits her car at the Bates motel and finds a deserted office. She then turns to discover a large Transylvanian type house on the hill above the motel. A shadow is seen walking past an upstairs window, then a young man is then seen running down the stairs to greet her. He introduces himself as the proprietor of the motel, Norman Bates. As he is checking her in the two begin to converse. Norman finds out that Marion is very hungry. He offers to fix her dinner in the kitchen of the house on the hill. The male gender had way more rights than women, and they had run more things than women. Finally, women began to come forward to voice their opinions about how men and women are made to be equal; no less, no more. It was now time for women to go out and pursue whatever they wanted to pursue and not have to worry about the fact that they are females or that they are weaker or have less education than a man. At the night of the play, Gwen asks Meg Why did you have to do Shakespeare for? We couldn t see a blessed thing . Once Gwen discovers the knowledge about Tom s condition, she gains sight, and is no longer metaphorically blind to reality. Through her sight, she realizes that family is more important than placing a false value on materialistic goods. This idea of discovery has been explored through relationships and events which significantly impacted on her new found knowledge and sight. Tom, the agent for change gains sight and knowledge into the acceptance of his impending death. The opening of the play starts with the ending of A Midsummer Night s Dream where Tom as Puck says Gentles, do not reprehend. If you pardon, we will mend. This foreshadows Tom s healing role in the play. An Analysis of Personality Theory An Analysis of Personality Theory by for Everyone has a personality, of course, but until fairly recently, there were no personality theories available to help understand what factors contribute to its development. In recent years, though, personality theories such as McCrae and Costa s Big Five and Schwartz s theory of basic values have been advanced for these purposes. To gain some deeper insights into these issues, this paper presents a review of the relevant peer reviewed and scholarly literature to provide a definition of personality and an examination of theoretical approaches to studying personality. • 30. The Essential Function Of The Lymphatic System In The... The lymphatic system is a system made up of tissues and organs, located inside and throughout the human body. The essential function of the lymphatic system is to keep fluid balance by transporting lymph, a fluid containing white blood cells, and depositing them into the blood stream. The lymphatic system helps the body get rid of waste, toxins and other undesirable substances. The lymphatic system can be looked at as a waste system required in the human body. This waste system performs a specific circulation to keep the bodily fluids balanced. As blood flows through the human body, blood plasma spills in the tissues through the narrow walls of the capillaries. The part of the blood plasma that leaves is known as extracellular or interstitial fluid. Extracellular fluid contains amino acids, oxygen, glucose and different supplements required by tissue cells. Although the vast majority of this fluid leaks instantly over into the blood stream, a level of it, alongside the particulate matter, is left out. The lymphatic system expels this fluid and these materials from tissues, returning them through the lymphatic vessels to the blood stream, hence keeping a fluid imbalance that results in the organism s death. The lymphatic system contains lymph nodes that are tiny glands placed all throughout the human body. Lymph nodes produce red blood cells and stores cells that fight infections also known as white blood cells. There are about 600 700 lymph nodes in the human body. Some can ... Thus, his buildings were very narrow and tall with an asymmetrical house design. Wright enjoyed designing buildings that were more progressive with low pitched roofs and an open floor plan. The firm was looking for someone to finish the drawings for the inside of an Auditorium Building. Wright was quickly chosen for the job and soon became an apprentice in the firm. While it only took Wright two hours to design, it took nearly 3 years to build the house because of conflicts between Wright and the construction contractor. The contractor thought Wright was inexperienced and doubted his choice of using reinforced concrete. Thus, to help settle any worries the contractor had, Kaufmann sent Wright s design to a firm of consulting engineers to approve of the said design. Once Wright heard this, he grew offended and threatened to leave the project if his drawings weren t returned. Kaufmann gave in to Wright s demands and ended up burying the consulting engineer s report within a stone wall of the house. Another conflict Kaufmann and Wright had dealt with supporting the West terrace. Kaufmann decided to instal a supporting wall underneath the West terrace because there was a noticeable sag after the concrete formwork was removed from the cantilever. A woman as fanciful and dreamy as this in such a position is not going to survive. As we continue to read this novella we must notice the governess wild and unnecessary use of elaborate adjectives to describe the simplest of things. Her style of writing in itself is quite romantic and poetic, full of metaphors and oxymorons. However sometimes her choice of words is so prompting we must take a closer look into perhaps a double or triple meaning. When she first sights the ghost of Peter Quint on top of the house she is able to describe his position with amazing precision in note of the fact she was some distance from him and her sighting was quite brief. She comments he stood at an angle, tall and erect... he fixed me with a hard gaze and when yet again she confides in Mrs Grouse she gives a very elaborate description commenting on his tight red curls, pale face, long in shape, small tiny whickers, darker arched eyebrows and the fact that he had no hat . The governess even uses phrases such as the intercourse of our conversation added to the intensity of our meeting in description of everyday things such as normal conversation. The governess certainly has deeper meaning behind most of her words. The last and most important point in regards to the governess repressed sexual desires is her highly inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour with both her pupils, in particular Miles. This rule states that a multiracial person is assigned to the race with the lowest social standing among the races represented. Going off of previous history and other social norms, the hierarchy would be as follows: non Hispanic white, Asian, Latinos, and lastly black. When forcing a youth to choose between one of their multiple races, those with some black or Latino heritage are far more likely to report being black or Latino than those with white or Asian heritage are to report being white or Asian (Herman 2009). Herman s study in 2009 examines the difference in grades between students of mixed races. Her ultimate conclusion is that self identification is the main indicating factor in academic achievement. Students possessing black or Latino ancestry are associated with decreased grades whereas students with white or Asian ancestry tend to do better. However, she also looked at the difference in grades between students of the same biracial category who self identify differently. Those who identify as Asian or white do significantly better in school than those who identify as black or Latino. An interesting conclusion from the study shows that where there is a difference between those who identify as Asian and those who identify as white, there is almost no difference in if the student identifies as black or Latino. Sheetz was founded in 1952 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and began to spread out as primarily convenience stores. In 1972 the company had expanded to seven to fourteen stores, and a year later Sheetz added gasoline pumps. It was in 1995 that Sheetz began to introduce touchscreen ordering and their food and beverage products, offering high quality food at a gas convenience store ( Our History ). The sane are usually attracted by other things than power. In a perfect world there would be no corruption or lust for power; however, humans are not perfect, therefore, mistakes are made and many crave money, pleasures, and power causing them to lose sight of what truly matter. Throughout the history of our existence, there have been instances of corruption for various reasons. Some cases include the terror of Maximilien Robespierre amid revolutionary France, the recent American Olympic scandal at the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics, and the ascension of the narcissistic rapper Kanye West. While corruption isn t always the reason for gaining power, it can become the reason why certain actions are taken to maintain that new power. Initially, Maximilien Robespierre was a French revolutionary who supported the people despite being a bourgeoisie, commonly seen as an enemy of the oppressed. Once the revolution gained control of the French monarchy, Robespierre let his greed and ambition take hold of him. Ludwig van Beethoven suffered through years of abuse from an alcoholic father and managed to overcome his burdens, adapt to his restrictions, and fill the void left from his mother dying at such an early age by creating beautiful music. In the same way, Eleanor Roosevelt dealt with an alcoholic father who, in turn, forced her into feeling at fault for being a victim of his abuse. It s costed $10 but was the best ice cream I ve probably ever ate. Zach said the same but London, Drew, and Chris were to full to eat dessert. Overall the food wasn t as good as Ficus Restaurante but both were delicious. Hotel in Pucon: Hotel Las Terrazas Next, where we stayed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the waitress took our order which took 10 minutes, the cooks only took about 10 15 to get our food to us. The thing that was even better was that the food was amazing. The reason the food was so amazing is that all the meat was natural like everything else, well that s what the waitress told us. It also says that on the menu. Also some pros were that it was very cheap. Meals costing anywhere from $5 $25 isn t bad especially considering how good it tasted. Overall, we completely recommend this restaurant. Service was great, food was great and we hope to visit it again. Entertainment We had lots of fun in Chillan, Chile. What we did first was we went to the Southern Lakes. Man the southern lakes were great and had an amazing view of the crystal blue water. We got to learn about the Mapuche culture and meet new people all around. After that we got to go ski on some cool Volcanoes. These volcanoes were the best because they had snowy slopes and we had never imagined this. Finally this was amazing because this volcanos you would think is a hot magma experience but in general we had lots of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Stereotypes In The Help The Help: A Discussion of Reality Kathryn Stockett s The Help is a novel set in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi and follows the lives of two black maids, Minny and Aibileen, and a privileged young white woman, Eugenia Skeeter Phelan. Together these three women set out to compile a book explaining how it is to work as a black maid in Jackson. While some critics argue The Help perpetuates black stereotypes and confines black women into Mammy roles, the novel actually promotes discussion of racial issues faced in the 1960 by black maids in a realistic manner without confining black women to a racist role. One of the novel s most common criticisms is the reprise of the stereotypical role of Mammy. Mammy is a fictional character from Gone with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact the character with the most noticeable change is Minny. At the beginning of the novel, Minny is closed off, in constant fear of losing her job and stuck in an abusive marriage. Even when she decides to help Skeeter with her book, Minny remains guarded and almost reluctant to tell her everything. Yet, at the end of the novel, Minny not only is noticeably relaxed around Skeeter, but even offers her life advice such as running her white butt to New York when Skeeter gets offered her dream job (Stockett 499). Minny also leaves her abusive husband, Leroy, after a particular volatile attack that leaves her standing barefoot and [at] rock bottom [at] the gas station, when she realizes that for the first time in her life, she has a secure job, Leroy s once needed support is now gone, and that she has the potential to be so much more than an abused wife (515). Minny Jackson is the pinnacle of development among the three narrators of the novel, and yet ABWH claims Skeeter is the main character. Another example is Aibileen, who at the beginning feels she does not have much left to offer in her older age, claims in the final few lines that maybe it is not too late to start anew (522). If The Help really is a coming of age story about Skeeter, then this revelation of Aibileen s would not be the last thought ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Mount Vesuvius Eruption 79 A.D. Mount Vesuvius What? Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano located near the bay of Naples in Italy (at the convergent boundary where the African Plate is being subducted beneath the Eurasian Plate), and it is mostly known for its eruption year 79 A.D. that buried the city Pompeii under a thick layer of volcanic ash. Although the destruction of the Roman cities Pompeii and Herculaneum is mostly mentioned when talking about the eruption, Mount Vesuviusalso affected other cities such as Oplontis, Stabiae, and Nuceria. (Santillo Frizell 2006) Stratovolcanoes What? Stratovolcanoes are tall, conical volcanoes that are heavily layered with hardened lava and volcanic ash. (Cashdollar et al. 1982) A Plinian eruption, also known as a Vesuvian eruption, is an eruption marked by columns of gas and volcanic ash extending high into the atmosphere, as well as a large amount of pumice and very continuous gas blast eruptions. A pyroclastic flow is one of the most dangerous forces released by an erupting volcano. A column of hot gas and ash is thrown into the air and collapses under its own weight. It then roars down the side of the volcano, obliterating everything in its path. (Watson 2011) The collapse of the gases in the pyroclastic flow was divided into several surges, and it is believed that surges 4 and 5 destroyed Pompeii. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum, was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 meters of ash and pumice. (Santillo Frizell 2006) Importance As we know now, Pompeii was buried although not completely destroyed by the powerful eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Today, the buried buildings of the ancient city have been uncovered and have survived to show us in amazing detail what town life was like under Roman rule, and because of this, the discovery of Pompeii is of huge importance for our understanding of the Roman world. When the pyroclastic flow enveloped Pompeii, its inhabitants were buried along with their city. Ash solidified around their bodies that eventually rotted away, leaving behind human shaped holes found by archaeologists more than 1,000 years later. These casts reveal the final ... • 50. Native Ancestors Practice Cannibalism For Ritual Purposes... Our prehistoric ancestors practiced cannibalism not because of cultural expectations, but for survival. Our oldest taboo has been the source of many debates, with researchers having different ideas about why our ancestors would partake in such a barbaric activity. Evidence of this practice can be found throughout the world, but in some cases the reasons differ. This presents a difficult question to be answered, did our prehistoric ancestors practice cannibalismfor ritual purposes or for survival? In one of the sites where humanremains were found to have been cannibalised was 14,700 years ago in Gough s Cave. Biological anthropologist Silvia Bello and her colleagues have used microscopic analyses to confirm that at least six people were dismembered and eaten. Human bite marks were found along the ribs and other bones and evidence also shows that tools were used to obtain marrow. It is one of the most well known archaeological examples of cannibalism being used by our ancestors. The time period in which these remains existed was when England s climate was becoming colder than usual, thus killing of prey and plants. Therefore, the search for food made the hunter gatherer s of this time period desperate for food (Bower). Author and scholar specializing in paleoanthropology Carole Henikoff breaks down the question of why our ancestors practiced cannibalism even further by asking, Do our emotional and physical reactions to incoming stimuli reflect instinct or ... • 52. Essay on The Doctrine of the Mean in Aristotles Politics The Doctrine of the Mean in Aristotle s Politics. Examining the texts of Aristotle s Nicomachean Ethics and Politics side by side, one is bound to find parallels between his reasoning with regard to the individual and to the state. In Nicomachean Ethics Aristotle discusses happiness, virtue, and the good life on an individual level and lays out necessary provisions for the good life of a person. He maintains that virtue is a necessary element of happiness: a man will be happy if he has virtues of justice, courage, and temperance, each constituting a balance between the extremes. But this requirement of virtue for the happy life goes beyond the individual level, as we see it in Politics . There, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the mean relative to us is not one, and is not the same for everyone . With respect to this, Aristotle states that virtue seeks the mean relative to us, and this is how each science produces its product well : by focusing on what is intermediate and making the product conform to that. A well made product will be that to which nothing can be added or taken away without making it worse, since it assumes that excess or deficiency ruins a good result, while the mean preserves it. And just like good craftsmen focus on an intermediate when they produce a product, one should aim at intermediate in regard to virtue. Thus we see that virtue is to be achieved by concentrating on the optimal mean between the extremes of deficiency and excess. But the discussion of virtue would be incomplete if one did not investigate its role with respect to the object possessing virtue and its effect on that object. Since Aristotle defines virtue as a state that decides the optimal mean relative to us, he asserts that every virtue causes its possessors to be in a good state and to perform their functions well; the virtue of eyes, e.g., makes the eyes and their functioning excellent, because it makes us see well , and this is argued to be true in the case of all objects. At this point, the role of virtue with respect to the object is apparent: something will be functioning at the best level only if it reaches an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. Victoria s Influence On Tom Luis Luis De Victoria The 16th century was a time of the Spanish Inquisition, which reigned for almost 400 years, forcing those who weren t Catholic to convert to Catholicism (Koeller). Catholicism was a major influence in all aspects of Spanish life at that time, ranging from music to art and daily living. Being a 16th century composer, TomГЎs Luis De Victoria was greatly influenced by the Catholic Church. Most, if not all of his music consisted of sacred pieces (Ferris). He was a Spanish polyphonic composer whose specialty was in motets. Not only was he one of the greatest composers and musicians of his time, he was also a scholar, a mystic, and a priest. Victoria was born in 1548 in SanchidriГЎn, Spain, a province of Avila, Castile to father, Francisco Luis de Victoria and mother, Francisca SuГЎrez de la Concha. Victoria was seventh of eleven children who were born into a family already leading vast and successful careers. Three of his male cousins (on his mother s side) achieved success by being a naval commander, a pioneer in Mexico, and a merchant in Florence. The merchant married Grand Duke Cosimo I de Medici s sister in law and was ennobled. The uncle on Victoria s father s side, who he was named after, was a lawyer who pleaded cases before the royal chancery at Valladolid (a city in north central Spain) and was later a priest. His other uncle on his father s side was also a priest (Stevenson). Victoria s father died on August 29th, 1557. Afterwards, an uncle of Victoria s, Juan Luis who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
