The ad that my partners and I analyzed is one with interesting components to it. This
assignment made me think more about how ads convey the intentions of the creators
as well as what one can interpret through studying the ad. My partners and I studied

As photography was being used more and more as a method of documentation, they
were among the first to use it to push social reform efforts. They closely documented
the devastating effects of industrialization and urbanization on the working class

article Violent Media Is Good For Kids, comic book author Gerald Jones, claims that
violent media such as comic books and cartoons can have a positive effect on our
children because children use violent stories to meet their emotional and
developmental needs. Jones argues against other people s views that violent media
will have a negative influence on children. Gerald Jones had many strengths in his
article which helped support his argument and could possible make his argument
effective. His strengths were mainly the use of emotional appeal like story telling and

Another cinematic technique that Burton incorporates throughout his films is
sound. Sound establishes the mood of the scene and complements the cinematic
technique of color. For example, in Corpse Bride, Burton not only uses vibrant
colors as a contrast to the real world but sounds as well. The scenes presented in the
real world were very uptight and bland, however, in the underworld, we are given an
array of different sounds and music, involving a lively band playing groovy music.
This sets a mood of a lively vibe in comparison to the depressing mood in the real

Since this Friday is Remembrance Day, I decided to read an article about the
veterans of Canada. This article was about the mental health of veterans when they
return home from war, and how they need support. This article revealed that at least
70 veterans that went to war in Afghanistan, have died from suicide after their return
home. In several cases, familymembers told the stories of their loved ones and gave
information about their treatment and how they died.
In many cases, soldiers didn t seek treatment in fear that their military careers would
come to an end. Others were on waiting lists or were directed to the bottom of the list
among treatment providers without getting consistent care, or seemed to slip under
the radar completely.

In the poem I crafted, The Roads Within , it extend the ideas of the original poem,
The Road Not Taken . One of the major ideas of the original poems is that we all
have a choice in the decisions and paths we take in life. In my poem I enforce that

able to move out of poverty. For example, a poor parents child becomes a poor

Angela s Ashes takes place in Ireland during the 1930s, a period of time when the
economy in Limerick was declining. The Street takes place in Harlem, New York
City during World War II. The settings in both novels take place in the bitter cold
during hard times. The settings play a huge role in the theme because it shows how
the characters live. Frank McCourtand Lutie Johnson are two characters who deal
with povertythroughout their lives. Frank McCourt, the author and main character
of Angela s Ashes, writes about the struggles with poverty he had as a child.
Through this time he has to make hard decisions in order to survive. Ann Petry
portrays poverty in her writing by using the cold to show the despair of the people
walking along the streets of New York. The authors way of showing poverty in their
novels differs in some ways but is very similar to one another. The author of Angela s
Ashes and the author of The Street convey the theme of poverty through their similar
settings and the characters need for survival.
The authors are able to convey the theme of poverty by creating similar settings in
New York City and Ireland. Lutie, the main character of The Street, walks down the
frigid sidewalk of New York observing the setting surrounding her. The author
illustrates the cold by writing, She shivered as the cold fingers of the wind touched
the back of her neck... (Petry). This quote shows the way the author portrays the
wind. She uses personification to give it life.
