Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas produced during incomplete burning of carbon-containing materials. It is toxic because it binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells instead of oxygen, interfering with oxygen transport throughout the body. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea and fainting, and in severe cases can lead to coma, weak pulse and respiratory failure. Prompt treatment focuses on respiratory assistance and administration of oxygen, sometimes with added carbon dioxide or under high pressure.
