In this 'PERICLES in practice' workshop, Fabio Corubolo used the EUMETSAT example to demonstrate the change of a policy in a real life scenario applying the Policy Editor and the Entity Registry Model Repository (ERMR).
The PERICLES in practice workshops presented specific outcomes of the PERICLES project set in an example workflow, combining tools to accomplish a goal defined by practitioners and derived from real life challenges they experience in their field of work.

This presentation was delivered by Pip Laurenson and Patricia Falcao (Tate/PERICLES) at the PERICLES final project conference 'Acting on Change: New Approaches and Future Practices in LTDP' (Wellcome Collection Conference Centre, London, 30 Nov -1 Dec 2016).
Tate partners joined Simon Waddington (King's College London), Barbara Reed (Recordkeeping Innovation) and Tomasz Miksa (SBA Research) in a thematic session on 'Risk assessment for preservation in the active life of complex digital objects'.
This session looked at how to characterise different types of risk which are relevant to the preservation of a range of digital objects in different contexts including those described by continuum theory. It also considered what type of information is available and required for accurate assessment within different preservation contexts, namely digital artworks, scientific data, records and archives. The focus of this session was largely on complex digital objects.

This thematic session entitled 'Policy Management & Ontology Supported Preservation' aimed at exploring the PERICLES ontology-based digital ecosystems approach, through studying a use case brought to us by Justin Simpson (Director, Archivematica Technical Services - Artefactual ). Mainly focusing on preservation policy management, the use case was a guiding thread to understand how the Linked Resource Model (LRM) ontology and its derivatives (e.g. Digital Ecosystem Model (DEM)) can be applied to address the change issues, notably to track and control the evolution of the objects we are interested in, to document and capture knowledge regarding the external tools associated to them as well as to understand the sensitivity of those objects to their overall technical context.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
