- Just to make it clear, the ‘F-word’ refers to ‘funding’.
- In the past, I used to run the eAssessment Scotland conferences, so was slightly obsessed on the topic of assessment and challenges in general.
- There are a lot of good coding challenge services out there - some like Code Combat which embed programming within the context of a game, or Robocode which simulates a robot battle. Coderbyte is definitely worth a look, but parts sit behind a firewall.
- Our solution offers a few differences - one, we want to tie the challenges to SQA qualifications; two, we are looking to make links with businesses (such as IBM and others) to places the challenges within a context and show pathways to employment and study opportunities; three, we have a sophisticated set of metrics to report back on the quality and validity of submitted code; and four, we want to use the data collected over time to further enhance the feedback, e.g. analysing the originality of solutions.
- Here’s the bit where I introduce our secret weapons - Shakya is our resident coding wizard who’s working on a pretty innovative coding interface with real-time feedback. Amanda, who also sets the definition of awesome, is developing our challenges.
- Okay, I have to admit that I like pretty fonts and text that lines up … we don’t always agree about the priorities in this project, though I (grudgingly) admit that getting everything to work is probably the most important thing on our ‘to-do’ list.
- So, time for the demo - now I do apologise for those who are just looking at the slides after the presentation, because you’ll miss out on Shakya’s magical presentation.
