Three studies have found that psychedelic drug use may reduce criminal behavior: 1) A 2017 study of over 480,000 people found that lifetime use of psilocybin and other psychedelics was associated with reduced odds of arrest and crimes like larceny, property crimes, violent crimes, and assault. 2) Between the 1950s-1970s, studies administering LSD and psilocybin to criminal offenders observed improvements in empathy, insight, and treatment engagement. 3) However, the 2017 study results are based on self-reports rather than observations, and more research is needed to understand how psychedelics impact the brain to influence behavior.
