Digital rights management (DRM) aims to restrict copying and use of digital media through encryption and licenses. However, DRM is difficult to implement securely as media must be decrypted to use, watermarks can be removed, and general purpose computers are hard to fully control. Previous DRM systems from Sony-BMG had serious technical issues, installing malware and transmitting user data without consent, damaging their brand. New architectures aim for more control through machine authentication and encrypted links, but fundamental technical limitations remain around watermarking and widespread file sharing. DRM may only feasibly support live events and interactive systems where use can be highly controlled. The document concludes that while DRM aims to restrict copying, an insecure personal computer allows users more
