Our Arts, Our Culture: That’s What It Means To Be A Filipino
Can [adapted] religion destroy a culture? How? How these restrictions impact on artists?
Adapted religion can or cannot destroy a culture. Why have I said so? It is because I believe
that there are a lot of situation in which a certain culture benefits from the religion that has come
to co-exist with the religion that we already have. For the reason that sometimes with the adapted
religion, we were reformed into something new and for the better, nevertheless only at times there
could be conflict of interest. Yes, a conflict of interest I say, because there are reasons why we
chose to be a part or a certain religion. Reasons we only know to ourselves. Those are reasons
which we think are valid enough to be part of that certain religion. And it is for us to judge if it has
destroyed our culture or not. How does it affect our culture? How does it destroy if it does? Or
how does it help if it does not destroy? Well, it’s for us to judge through our own selves if it has
destroyed our culture or not. As form me I believe that in everything we do, we do for a certain
reason. So when we chose to adapt a new religion it is in our own risk. Somehow we believe it is
for the better. And because in every religion there are things that we are told to do and not to do,
things to follow and things which are forbidden, so there are restrictions in our thoughts, actions
and the way we do things for our living. If we talk about how this could impact on artists, well
then it has an immense effect on every artist. Why? Because as I have made mention, there are
restrictions, there are prohibitions, there are limitations to what an artist’s could do. That is why
as an artist, you may not be able to freely express your thought, your creativity, your imagination
through your work because you are not allowed to do so by a certain religion, a hindrance to every
artist who is expressing his work or art. It is evident that with our religious beliefs there are those
in authority who created rules. And rules must be followed either it may be based on human
perspective or through the words from the bible. Absolutely, if you are an artist in the creation of
your work of art, you have to analyze if what you have created is not against your faith, which it
could not show rebellion against the religion you are in.
