Calibration of Biomedical instruments

Patient care now a days, is dependent on wide
variety of medical equipment for diagnosis as well
as for therapeutics and follow up action . Unless
properly calibrated, the outcome of the diagnostic
equipment and effect generated by therapeutic
equipment will be error prone and may adversely
affect the treatment of the patient. There for
 regular calibration against appropriate standards
becomes essential function to be carried out.
What is Calibration ?
A set of operations, performed in
accordance with a definite procedure, that
compares the measurement performed by
an instrument to those made by a more
accurate instrument or a standard for the
purpose of detecting and reporting or by
adjusting, error met in the instrument
                   tested.
Purpose of Calibration ?
To ensure reading from an instrument are
 consistent with other instruments.
To determine the accuracy of the
instrument (that it can be trusted for its
 observed/ displayed measured value).
Objective of Calibration facility
 To ensure that products are manufactured to
  specifications.
 To improve the quality of Health care facilities.
 To ensure patient safety and welfare of human life.
 To increase quality & value of product.
 It will improve international acceptability of test
  results.
 It will reduce technical barriers in trade.
Measuring & calibrating
instruments used for Calibration
   of Biomedical Equipments

 Multi Parameter Simulator:

It generates number of ECG waveforms to test
& verify ECG machine& patient monitor.
These waveforms are used to test frequency
  response,sensitivity,gain,paper speed, internal
  calibration, system dumping, R-wave
calibration. This instrument also offers signals
to calibrate parameter of Bed side Monitor &
  calibration i.e., respiration, temperature, BP.
SpO2 Simulator:

 It determines the performance of standard
  Pulse Oximeter.
 It acts as virtual patient’s index finger, to
simulate a patient with virtually any
combination of blood oxygen condition &
pulse condition (BPM) to see whether the pulse
  oximeter’s results match the simulator.
 It can also tests the complete probe and
  electronic assembly optically or electrically.
Defibrillator Analyzer :

 It measured the delivered energy in Jules
  (Watt-Second) from defibrillator by simulating
  the human body’s resistance.

 It also measured the synchronization time in
millisecond & defibrillator charge time in
  second.
Infusion Device Analyzer:

It can measure following parameter of infusion
 device.

 Volume.
 Flow Rate.
 Occlusion Pressure.
Electrosurgical Analyzer:

It can measure following parameters of
 Electrosurgical Unit.

 Generator Output.
 HF Leakage Current.
 Contact Quality monitor
Incubator Analyzer:

It can measure the following parameters of
 Baby Incubator/ Radiant Warmer.

 Temperature.
 Air Flow.
 Humidity.
 Sound.
Ultrasound Wattmeter:

 It measures the parameter of Ultrasonic
 Therapeutic Device i.e.,
 Output Power in watts (For variety of
 transducer shapes & sizes)
International Safety Analyzer:
This instrument is used to measure the
parameter for electrical safety of hospital and
  laboratory electromedical equipment.
  It can measure following parameters.

 Main voltage
 Current consumption
 Earth resistance
 Patient Leakage current
 Earth Leakage current
 Insulation resistance
