Results and Benefits
After go live, VELUX has obtained business
benefits by implementing SAP BW powered by
HANA.
The initial benefits achieved by simple putting the
existing data warehouse on HANA:
•  Up to 4x faster report execution
•  Faster loading performance of process chains.
Average load time went down by 50%
•  Up to 40x shorter DSO activation time
Long term benefits which can be realized due to
the implementation of HANA:
•  Future proof data warehouse solution. By
migrating the entire existing BW solution to
HANA VELUX got a data warehouse platform
that can leverage future technology and tools,
i.e. Predictive Analysis, HANA studio
•  Improving performance of data warehouse, by
utilizing the in-memory calculations VELUX will
be able to implement new planning process
which requires real-time calculation of data
•  Drastically improve reporting performance. By
redesigning data flows and reports gain the
true potential that BW on HANA brings
Challenge
The challenge was to migrate the entire BW
system on to HANA. The scope of the project
were:
•  Migrate BW to HANA, migrate all four
systems (Sandbox, Development, Quality &
Production)
•  Install disaster tolerant solution, HP’s
solution for disaster tolerant HANA
environment
•  Allow for new functionality, enabling VELUX
to implement new planning process (BPC)
and analytics capabilities (Predictive
Analysis, Management dashboards)
•  Start small think big, migrating current data
models and flows. Get initial benefits from
migration and then optimize solution going
forward
•  Going from good to great, VELUX had a
stable and well performing data warehouse.
Reporting performance was achieved
through the use of BW Accelerator and
effective data modeling
Solution
Scope: The project should migrate the entire
BW system which consisted of:
•  40 functional areas, including finance,
logistics, planning, budgeting (IP), BPC
consolidation
•  5000+ reports
•  290 infocubes, 370 DSO’s
•  Multiple frontends; Bex (xls, web), BO
(Webi, Analysis, Dashboards), IP, BPC
•  Integration within VELUX landscape (SAP
ECC, BO XI 4, SAP APO, SAP CRM,
legacy systems)
•  2000+ users
•  6,5 TB of data
Time: Project was delivered in 7 months. This
included the following activities:
•  Patch BW to SP8
•  Split stacks (ABAP & JAVA) on BW system
•  Migrate BW database to HANA
•  Install HP High Availability Disaster Tolerant
Scale Out Solution
Scenario
VELUX is the worlds largest roof windows manufacturer. VELUX has 15 production companies and 40 sales companies around the globe. A
strong SAP tradition has resulted in a large and complex BW system which supports all companies with reporting from the entire SAP functional
landscape. Whilst redefining the corporate performance model they sought to energize their BI solution in order to meet future demand by
introducing HANA.
