A Sound and Liberal
Education.
In 1843 our founders declared their goal “to offer the country a sound and liberal education.”
To this day our primary focus remains delivering a broad-based education in an intimate
learning environment that encourages exploration and discovery. Located in the beautiful
Eastern Townships of Quebec, Bishop’s is an English University offering programs in
Business, Education, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities.
Learning at Bishop’s starts with a small group and a question.
With fewer than 2,500 students, we offer some of the smallest class sizes in the country.
You want to get to know your professors? No problem. You won’t be a number here.
We won’t let you. We provide our students with personalized attention. We listen.
We debate. We push students to expand their horizons. We believe in interdisciplinary
study, and in gaining a broad foundation of knowledge about the wider world.
Our students are empowered to deal with complexity, diversity, and change.
Choosing to study at Bishop’s means you are seeking an educational experience
that is going to be unique, exceptional, and transformational.

One thing’s for sure. You’re going to change a lot during your time here.
First year classes are all about introductions—to new subjects, to your professors
and to your peers. In many ways it’s an introduction to yourself—you’re about
to see what you’re made of. You’ll be hitting the books, and the material will
challenge you. Over time, you will be confident in your ability to form an argument,
write an excellent paper, and speak your mind.
Learning in a non-judgmental community is the best way to build one's identity
and to develop the confidence to try new things.  That's why Bishop's students
have consistently rated their experience as amongst the most satisfying and most
engaging in Canada, and why they go on to do amazing things with their lives.
A lot of what happens here depends on you. Creating an academic environment where
you can grow and change depends on us.

on the civilizations of Greece and
Rome and study their literature,
mythology, history, art, archaeology,
and language. Classics students can
study Latin or Greek. If your goal
is to go to Law or Med-school,
you should study Latin. 70% of the
English language is Latin in origin!

on campus? Come to Bishop’s. With
two student-run theatre festivals
and multiple studio and main
stage productions each year, there

Discover the ancient world through "swords and sandals" movies.
Uncover the concepts and cultural expressions of world religions. Take a photography
class in the Molson Fine Arts Building. Spend a spring semester studying Italian in Italy.
Humanities students love to get creative and combine their interests. Many choose to
double-major or add a minor in order to explore new disciplines.
Studying the humanities has long been at the heart of a liberal education.
Why? Because studying human achievement across time and cultures develops
critical inquiry, the ability to express and communicate bold ideas,
and prepares students for a lifetime of learning.
Explore people,
societies, and cultures.

left behind on ancient ecosystems?
What are the physical processes that
underlie environmental systems?
Search for solutions while studying
the history of human impact on the
environment. Hands-on fieldwork
and research projects play a great
role in understanding environmental
changes like global warming, acid
rain, ozone depletion and water
conservation. Our students are
encouraged to positively shape the
future of our environment.
Economics
How does an economy work? How
well is it performing? How can it
perform better? Economics is where
business, applied mathematics, and
human behaviour meet. Studying
Economics at Bishop’s means honing
your problem solving skills and
examining complex issues through
the specialized lenses of Business
Economics, Public Policy, and
International Public Economy &
Global Economy.
Political Studies
What is the role of government,
politicians, citizens and private
industry in shaping accepted political
norms? How is Canada’s political
system different from the American
system? The European Union? Take
national politics one step further
and explore worldwide relations,
the impact of globalization and the
emergence of a new international
economic and political order.
Psychology
Why do people procrastinate? What
causes schizophrenia? Explore these
questions from the perspective of
psychological theories as you study
the mind and human behaviour.
Learn how to design studies, collect
and present data that stands up to
scientific scrutiny. Many students
work as research assistants with
faculty members involved in exciting
initiatives underway at Bishop’s—

Dr. Valerio Faraoni
"People look to theoretical
physicists to predict
how the universe works,"
explains Valerio Faraoni, Physics professor.
"A lot of the work is actually asking the
right questions. That's one of the great
things about studying Physics at Bishop's.
There are opportunities to jump right into
the big questions and to refine the skills you
need to make a contribution to the field
of Physics.”
With his own wide-ranging research interests
in gravitation, cosmology and black holes,
Dr. Faraoni is committed to introducing his
students to the exciting research of visiting
physicists from around the world through
a series of seminars offered throughout the
school year. "We have alumni teaching and
conducting research in institutions such as
the California Institute of Technology and
The Australian Astronomical Observatory. I
really enjoy seeing what my former students
are up to."
Dr. Jessica Riddell
“Studying literature develops an internal
lens for critical thinking which applies
equally to an ad, a television show,
or a piece of public policy,"
states Dr. Jessica Riddell. This strong
conviction, her infectious love of learning,
and pop culture sensibilities has made a big
impression on her students. Dr. Riddell's early
interests in reading, social justice, and the
desire to shape the world in profound ways
has led to a dynamic teaching career as an
English professor at Bishop’s.
Equally passionate about learning outside
the classroom, Dr. Riddell founded the
Quebec Universities English Undergraduate
Conference for undergraduate English
students from across Canada and the U.S. This
annual conference provides a collaborative
and supportive environment for students to
share their ideas and research. "I only do
things that have the energy of the student
body behind me. Projects that are student
focused, student driven, and student run. I am
constantly inspired by my students."

Dr. Michael Teed
"Choosing a university is a lot
like finding the right job.
It's all about the fit."
As an industrial organizational psychologist,
Business professor Dr. Michael Teed loves to share
hispassionforhumanbehaviourintheworkplace.
"Bishop's is a place where the classroom is only
five rows deep. So when I introduce a theoretical
perspective on something like leadership, the
intimate environment really supports discussion."
Dr. Teed's newest initiative is harnessing this
classroom setting as an opportunity for group
learning with real-world, practical implications.
"One of the things student face when they leave
university and start looking for work is the
demand for work experience. I knew this was a
stressor and started to think about ways I could
address it in the classroom. I've been working on
a model to train students in résumé writing and
interview coaching, as well as HR consultation
for small businesses. They will then offer these
services to members of the community. It's a great
exercise in experiential learning.”
Dr. Michele Murray
"I came to teaching in the same way
I came to be an academic — driven by my love
of learning,"
explains Dr. Michele Murray, professor
of Religion and Dean of Arts and Science.
"While I was working on my Master’s degree
in Jewish history, becoming a professor in
a university wasn't on my radar. I actually
took a break half way through my degree
to pursue training as a commercial pilot. I
realized towards the end of that training that
I had reached a point where I would master
the crucial aspects of flying. The times that
would be exciting, would be emergencies—
times you don't want. I learned something
really important about myself. I didn't want
to arrive—I wanted to always be learning.
I feel that I am always learning from my
students. It's a joint effort in the classroom.
Students come with perspectives and insights
that have never occurred to me. I love how
my students are always stimulating me to
look at something in a different way."

Located an hour

Montreal, Bishop’s
is nestled in the
English borough of
Lennoxville in the
city of Sherbrooke.
The local pubs,
shops and bakeries

warmly.
This region of Quebec is well known for its natural beauty, and
multi-cultural flair. You’ll find theatre, dancing and music fill the
air in all four seasons. Trade summer bike paths and hiking trails
for ski slopes and snowshoes when the snow starts flying.
Bishop’s is located in the heart of ski country; eight hills within
90 minutes of Lennoxville. Did we mention the golf course
on campus? And how about the food? It’s local and exceptional.

The ability to recognize opportunities.
The confidence to act.
The tools to live the kind of life you want.
Come for the experience.
Leave with your story.
In my first year as Principal, I addressed the entering
class. I shared with them my career as a lawyer,
community leader and newspaper publisher, and invited
students who were interested in such topics to visit my
office for further discussion. The next day, six students
arrived at my office door. This is the personal nature
of Bishop’s. It is truly education on a human scale.
I'm proud to watch students realize their potential,
whether on stage, in a classroom or as a member of one
of our varsity teams. This is a community bursting
with ambition, full of students who are capable and
willing to take on the challenges our world faces. Our
model of education provides them the tools to act,
the confidence to perform and the knowledge to ask the
right questions. In an increasingly complex world, our
most effective leaders will be those who can innovate
across disciplines. Students from across Canada and

to building lifelong friendships and to realizing their
future ambitions.

  • 3. bishop’s UNIVERSITY 54 - h i s t o r y a n d t r a d i t i o n - A Sound and Liberal Education. In 1843 our founders declared their goal “to offer the country a sound and liberal education.” To this day our primary focus remains delivering a broad-based education in an intimate learning environment that encourages exploration and discovery. Located in the beautiful Eastern Townships of Quebec, Bishop’s is an English University offering programs in Business, Education, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities. We believe in interdisciplinary study, and in gaining a broad foundation of knowledge about the wider world. Our students are empowered to deal with complexity, diversity, and change. Choosing to study at Bishop’s means you are seeking an educational experience that is going to be unique, exceptional, and transformational. • 4. bishop’s UNIVERSITY6 7 One thing’s for sure. You’re going to change a lot during your time here. First year classes are all about introductions—to new subjects, to your professors and to your peers. In many ways it’s an introduction to yourself—you’re about to see what you’re made of. You’ll be hitting the books, and the material will challenge you. Over time, you will be confident in your ability to form an argument, write an excellent paper, and speak your mind. Learning in a non-judgmental community is the best way to build one's identity and to develop the confidence to try new things.  That's why Bishop's students have consistently rated their experience as amongst the most satisfying and most engaging in Canada, and why they go on to do amazing things with their lives. A lot of what happens here depends on you. Creating an academic environment where you can grow and change depends on us. - T h e B i s h o p ’ s e x p e r i e n ce - - T h e B i s h o p ’ s e x p e r i e n ce - The Bishop's Experience. I really enjoy seeing what my former students are up to." Dr. Jessica Riddell “Studying literature develops an internal lens for critical thinking which applies equally to an ad, a television show, or a piece of public policy," states Dr. Jessica Riddell. This strong conviction, her infectious love of learning, and pop culture sensibilities has made a big impression on her students. Dr. Riddell's early interests in reading, social justice, and the desire to shape the world in profound ways has led to a dynamic teaching career as an English professor at Bishop’s. Equally passionate about learning outside the classroom, Dr. Riddell founded the Quebec Universities English Undergraduate Conference for undergraduate English students from across Canada and the U.S. This annual conference provides a collaborative and supportive environment for students to share their ideas and research. "I only do things that have the energy of the student body behind me. Projects that are student focused, student driven, and student run. I am constantly inspired by my students." bishop’s UNIVERSITY 15 Photos:ShelleyWhitehead

It's all about the fit." As an industrial organizational psychologist, Business professor Dr. Michael Teed loves to share hispassionforhumanbehaviourintheworkplace. "Bishop's is a place where the classroom is only five rows deep. So when I introduce a theoretical perspective on something like leadership, the intimate environment really supports discussion." Dr. Teed's newest initiative is harnessing this classroom setting as an opportunity for group learning with real-world, practical implications. "One of the things student face when they leave university and start looking for work is the demand for work experience. I knew this was a stressor and started to think about ways I could address it in the classroom. I've been working on a model to train students in résumé writing and interview coaching, as well as HR consultation for small businesses. They will then offer these services to members of the community. It's a great exercise in experiential learning.”  Dr. Michele Murray "I came to teaching in the same way I came to be an academic — driven by my love of learning," explains Dr. Michele Murray, professor of Religion and Dean of Arts and Science. "While I was working on my Master’s degree in Jewish history, becoming a professor in a university wasn't on my radar. I actually took a break half way through my degree to pursue training as a commercial pilot. I realized towards the end of that training that I had reached a point where I would master the crucial aspects of flying. The times that would be exciting, would be emergencies— times you don't want. I learned something really important about myself. I didn't want to arrive—I wanted to always be learning. I feel that I am always learning from my students. It's a joint effort in the classroom. Students come with perspectives and insights that have never occurred to me. I love how my students are always stimulating me to look at something in a different way."
