Future of the Learning Management System and SakaiJoshua
This session will begin with a short presentation on one possible vision for the future of Sakai over the coming decade as means to stimulate a community-wide discussion on the topic. The presentation will explore a future in which the ?monolithic? LMS of today becomes ?unbundled?, allowing for unconstrained customization of both the learning platform as well as the learning experience. This future will be viewed through the Sakai Learning Design Lenses, which were created, by the Teaching and Learning Group in 2010, to help defining the capabilities that the LMS needs to support. Session attendees will be invited to share their own visions and question that which was presented through an open community dialog. The session will conclude with a discussion of possible next steps in reaching community-wide consensus on a common vision and the work needed to achieve it.
Impact Well-Beyond Market Share: Synergy Between Open Source and StandardsCharles Severance
While there are a few very successful open source projects that achieve significant market share such as the Apache Web Server, Tomcat, Linux, and PHP, the vast majority of Open Source projects often achieve a relatively small fraction of market share. This is not surprising given the lack or a profit motive by open source projects. Individual participants in open source projects may have profit motives, but generally the project itself is focused on building the best quality software regardless of the ultimate market share. Even when an open source project has a relatively small market share, it can have a strong influence in the overall market by participating in standards activities as well as providing high-quality reference implementation of standards when those standards are approved. Open Source projects are often the best way to get a standard to the tipping point in terms of market adoption even if the open source software only represents a small fraction of the real market. This talk will discuss standards in general and in particular standards for teaching and learning produced by the IMS Global Learning Consortium. We will discuss the progression of the IMS Learning Tools Interoperability Standard and how open source involvement in the process has greatly affected the overall marketplace.

Empowering Teachers with More Pluggable Educational TechnologyCharles Severance
Teachers are often greatly limited in the educational technology they can use in their classes because it becomes increasingly complex to use on the web software from many different vendors. Students must get a separate account for each new system, teachers need to jump between systems to assess and grade student work and transfer grades between the different systems.
Thorough the IMS Global Learning Consortium (www.imsglobal.org), the marketplace is developing standards that will allow course rosters and roles to be moved from one system to another and for graded to be moved between systems without rewiring hand-copying of data between systems. The new standard is called 'IMS Learning Tools Interoperability'. For example if your school uses Moodle and you would like to use www.chemvantage.org for Chemistry homework, you can simply 'plug' ChemVantage into Moodle and the rest is handled automatically.
This presentation will introduce IMS Learning Tools Interoperability at a very high level and show some demonstrations of it working with Sakai, Moodle, and Blackboard.

The IMS Learning Tools Interoperability standard exists in Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Sakai, Moodle, and WebCT, which allows a learning tool to be written to integrate with these LMS systems. This presentation will give an overview of IMS LTI, demonstrate its use in an LMS, and provide developer resources for LTI.
This talk about functionality mashup and IMS Learning Tools Interoperability was presented at the IMS Korea meeting on 22-Oct-2010 at the Vivaldi Ski Resort in South Korea. It looks at the challenges of having far too many accounts to make use of the "Web 2.0" software.
This is my talk from the 2011 Blackboard Developer's Conference July 11, 2011. It was a lot of fun and ended with a chaotic demo of a new feature connecting Sakai and Blackboard CourseSItes. Recorded version of this coming.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

12. The Challenge
• Need to develop more sophisticated
standards for interoperability
• Need to train 1000's of developers to
read ,understand, and implement the standards
• As standards improve they expand and get more complex
• Impossible?
13. We need "WordPress"
• A free downloadable off-the-shelf software package that gets
people going quickly
• Allow thousands of educational sites to be built and put into
production by anyone
14. "EduPress"
• An Learning Management System (LMS) of my own
• An Open Educational Resource site of my own
• A Learning Object Repository (LOR) of my own
• A Learning Record Store (LRS) of my own
• Millions of sites – millions of courses
all similar with common capabilities
structure and similar but at the same
time unique and distinct
15. What is 次?
Software to allow anyone to build and deploy interoperable
educational web sites, content, and learning tools
20. Use Cases
• Campus IT Staff – App Store with locally owned data
• Instructional Designers – Can focus programmers on
building functionality – not reading standards
• Faculty – Can build learning content once and use it over
and over – content can be open
• Book Authors - Can build a site with
supporting materials and software with
seamless integration into LMSs
21. Use Cases
• OER Publishers – Excellent way to share truly reusable
and remixable software and content
• MOOC Platform – Small Schools / Single Course /
Professional Society
• EdTech Startups – A couple of students can have a
seamlessly integrated learning tool at MVP in weeks
• LMS Vendors – Can encourage their customers to easily
build tools that work smoothly rather than break
24. Tsugi is Ongoing Research
