Building Value - Understanding the TCO and ROI of Apache Kafka & Confluent
For a product or service to be cost effective, it must be considered to be good value, where the benefits are worth at least what is paid for them. But how do we measure this, to prove the case? Given that value can be intangible, it can be hard to quantify and may have little relationship to cost. Modern businesses have the same needs nowadays, whether it’s due to competitive pressure or because their customers have much higher expectations of how they want to interact with a product or service. At the heart of this movement are events: in today’s digital age, events are everywhere. Every digital action—across online purchases to ride-sharing requests to bank deposits—creates a set of events around transaction amount, transaction time, user location, account balance, and much more. The technology that allows businesses to read, write, store, and compute and process these events in real-time are event-streaming platforms, and tens of thousands of companies like Netflix, Audi, PayPal, Airbnb, Uber, and Pinterest have picked Apache Kafka as the de facto choice to implement event-driven architectures and reshape their industries.

Apache Kafka can act as both an enemy and a friend to traditional middleware like message queues, ETL tools, and enterprise service buses. As an enemy, Kafka replaces many of the individual components and provides a single scalable platform for messaging, storage, and processing. However, Kafka can also integrate with traditional middleware as a friend through connectors and client APIs, allowing certain use cases to still leverage existing tools. Abstract: Would you cross the street with traffic information that’s a minute old? Certainly not. Modern businesses have the same needs nowadays, whether it’s due to competitive pressure or because their customers have much higher expectations of how they want to interact with a product or service. At the heart of this movement are events: in today’s digital age, events are everywhere. Every digital action—across online purchases to ride-sharing requests to bank deposits—creates a set of events around transaction amount, transaction time, user location, account balance, and much more. The technology that allows businesses to read, write, store, and compute and process these events in real-time are event-streaming platforms, and tens of thousands of companies like Netflix, Audi, PayPal, Airbnb, Uber, and Pinterest have picked Apache Kafka as the de facto choice to implement event-driven architectures and reshape their industries.
Michael Noll explores why and how you can use Apache Kafka and its growing ecosystem to build event-driven architectures that are elastic, scalable, robust, and fault tolerant, whether it’s on-premises, in the cloud, on bare metal machines, or in Kubernetes with Docker containers. Apache Kafka can act as both an enemy and a friend to traditional middleware like message queues, ETL tools, and enterprise service buses. As an enemy, Kafka replaces many of the individual components and provides a single scalable platform for messaging, storage, and processing. However, Kafka can also integrate with traditional middleware as a friend through connectors and client APIs, allowing certain use cases to still leverage existing tools. In complex environments with both new and legacy systems, Kafka acts as a "frenemy" - replacing some functions but integrating with other existing technologies to provide a bridge to new architectures.

Software Architecture in Process Automation: UML & the "Smart Factory"
Distributed control systems are currently evolving towards Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) systems. Still, they still suffer from complex commissioning processes that incur high costs. Researchers have proposed several so-called ''Plug and Produce'' (PnP) approaches, where commissioning shall be largely automated, but they have suffered from semantic ambiguities and usually rely on proprietary information models. We propose a novel reference architecture for PnP in IIoT systems, which is based on OPC UA and PLCopen standards and can reduce industrial device commissioning times across vendor products to a few seconds. Our proof-of-concept implementation can handle more than 500 signals per millisecond during runtime, sufficient for most application scenarios.
