Have you ever had your upstream producers write poisoned data that breaks your downstream consumers? Did Personal Identifiable Information (PII) land in a Kafka topic that wasn’t supposed to have it? Tinder’s Quickfire Pipeline powers all things data at Tinder. It was originally built using AWS Kinesis Firehoses and has since been extended to use both Kafka and other event buses. It is the core of Tinder’s data infrastructure. This rich data flow of both client and backend data has been extended to service a variety of needs at Tinder, including Experimentation, ML, CRM, and Observability, allowing backend developers easier access to shared client side data. We perform this using many systems, including Kafka, Spark, Flink, Kubernetes, and Prometheus. Many of Tinder’s systems were natively designed in an RPC first architecture.
Things we’ll discuss decoupling your system at scale via event-driven architectures include:
– Powering ML, backend, observability, and analytical applications at scale, including an end to end walk through of our processes that allow non-programmers to write and deploy event-driven data flows.

GumGum relies heavily on Cassandra for storing different kinds of metadata. Currently GumGum reaches 1 billion unique visitors per month using 3 Cassandra datacenters in Amazon Web Services spread across the globe.
This presentation will detail how we scaled out from one local Cassandra datacenter to a multi-datacenter Cassandra cluster and all the problems we encountered and choices we made while implementing it.

Predicting Loan Delinquency at One Million Transactions per SecondRevolution Analytics
Real-time applications of predictive models must be able to generate predictions at the rate that transactions are generated. Previously, such applications of models trained using R needed to be converted to other languages like C++ or Java to achieve the required throughput. In this talk, I’ll describe how to use the in-database R processing capabilities of Microsoft R Server to detect fraud in a SQL Server database of loan records at a rate exceeding one million transactions per second. I will also show the process of training the underlying gradient-boosted tree model on a large training set using the out-of-memory algorithms of Microsoft R.

Providing an easy way for developers to use event streams without having to learn all the complexity of how to build a streaming application from scratch was key to the adoption of an event-driven architecture at Babylon.
Java/Scala engineers could be well catered for by KStreams and the like. But we wanted a super simple way for all of our python developers to be able write code that does super simple things (like: react to an event, do some processing and then optionally output some more events). They should only have to write a single (typed) function, and not have to worry about consumers, producers, serdes or any other things that us Kafka-folk love to harp on about.
We found that by using the ""agent"" concept in faust we could provide our engineers with a ""Function as a Service""-like experience specifically for processing events on Kafka streams. By ruthlessly focussing on the developer experience we massively increased the number of developers using the data streams available at Babylon and reduced the time to deployment for a new stream processing app by an order of magnitude.

Abstract: Until today existing enterprise applications are integrated, tested, and deployed as monoliths. This is very time-consuming and hinders agile business models. Cloud technology promises unlimited scalability, short release cycles, quick deployments and antifragility. But can we evolve these systems into the cloud with reasonable effort? What do we have to change and what are the risks involved? This talk will share the experiences from a real world customer project and present an industrialized approach for the Cloud-native evolution of existing IT landscapes.
Cloud native applications are popular these days. They promise superior reliability and almost arbitrary scalability. They follow three key principles: they are built and composed as microservices. They are packaged and distributed in containers. The containers are executed dynamically in the cloud. But which technology is best to build this kind of application? This talk will be your guidebook.
In this hands-on session, we will briefly introduce the core concepts and some key technologies of the cloud native stack and then show how to build, package, containerize, compose and orchestrate a cloud native showcase application on top of a cluster operating system such as Kubernetes or OpenShift. Throughout the session we will be using an off-the-shelf MIDI controller to visualize the concepts and to remote control the cluster.

This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
