2. A Personal Learning Network is a collection
of people with whom you engage and share
information using a wealth of connections
(Buchanan 2011).
3. The problem
The way we learn is changing
due to new technical and social
opportunities with little help
from the formal education
system. The line between formal
education and other kinds of
learning and knowledge
acquisition is blurring.
(Beetham and Oliver 2010)
4. There is a wealth of digitally
available information and the term
“continuous partial attention” as
described by Bawden (2012)
describes the anxiety that can be
felt from information overload.
5. The solution
A Personal Learning Network
would allow you to learn, share
and converse with professionals
within your industry and to group
what is most important for your
development together, through
effective content curation.
6. Couros (2008) developed the networked
teacher model, described by Drexler
(2010), which is one that represents an
educator’s professional learning
environment (PLE). It serves as an example
of the numerous connections that
comprise a professional network and will
equip an educator to facilitate networked
learning if he or she has experienced the
construction of such a model first hand.
7. How it works (Dale 2014)
Step 1
Step 2
Organise information
through categorisation
Step 3
Networking through
participation in
networks to enhance
learningUse tools to find and
filter information
8. How it works (Dale 2014)
Step 4
Step 5
Use sense making skills
Step 6
Add insight through
your own storytelling
Use critical thinking
skills
9. Selected
Aggregation
Tools
● Feedly
● Hootsuite
● Tweetdeck
● Evernote
● Diigo
Aggregation has to do with collecting of information with minimal focus on weight and value of
particular pieces of content - a way to filter the web (Grant in Herther 2012)
10. Selected
Curation Tools
● Paper.li
● Scoopit
● Storify
● Pearltrees
● Pinterest
The result of curation is new value in the group - as opposed to filtering (Grant in Herther 2012)
11. The warning
Drexler (2010) warns that construction
of a Personal Learning Network does
not necessarily facilitate
comprehension or deep
understanding. Learning potential
exists in what you do with the
compilation of content and how it is
synthesised.
12. So add your story…..
Mihailidis (2013) confirms that Storytelling advances the core media
literacy principles of analysis, evaluation and creating. Using content
curation, you can compose a story with heightened awareness of purpose
and audience.
