Introduction
The site of the project is within the area of the Malaysian Nature Society
Environmental Interpretive Centre in Sepang, Selangor. Located approximately 75 minutes
from Kuala Lumpur, the Environmental Interpretive Centre (EIC) is dominated by landscape
of mangroves and rivers. It also acts as a sanctuary to many species of flora and fauna such
as the endangered smooth otter, which has been adopted by the EIC as its logo.
The task of this project is to design a Nature Appreciation Center with
approximately floor area of 800 sq. m. The facilities included should provide a mixed use
facility to accommodate community needs. The space in NAC are divided into Core Spaces
and Additional Spaces. The core spaces are meeting/interactive space, learning area,
refreshment and commercial meanwhile the additional spaces are souvenir shop and
cafeteria.

INDUSTRIALIZED BUILDING SYSTEM (IBS)
Industrialized Building System (IBS) is a new construction method that benefit client and
constructor in reduce unskilled and foreign workforce, provide a safe environment on site.
Besides, it has shorten the time consume of construction process to ensure the quality of
structural works and saving cost.
At the beginning process, the production of component may involve planning, managing
and maintaining quality to reduce waste (material and cost) and to ensure the component
has no defect and can be delivered on time.
DEFINITION OF INDUSTRIALIZED BUILDING SYSTEM (IBS)
An Industrialized Building System(IBS) may be defined in which all the building components
such as wall, floor slab, beams, column and staircase at site under strict quality control and
minimal on site activities.( Rollect, 1986, Trika, 1999)
MEHOD OF CONSTRUCTION
1. Allow the efficient placement and connection of reinforcement in the criticall wall
2. Provide for more reinforcement in the wall than current practice
3. Ideal in seismic area
4. Site based casting operations using fiber reinforced plastic casting beds opens the
market to a large market of subcontractors
5. Combined with ½ slabs its provide a 100% IBS solution
6. It is more cost effective the conventional construction.
Figure : Example of installation of hollow core slab and wall at site
5
ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE OF IBS
Compared to conventional construction method, the Industrialized Building System (IBS) has
Advantages:
 Reduce unskilled worker
 Less wastage
 Less volume of building materials
 Better Quality Control
 Construction operation is not affected by adverse weather conditions
 Safe and more organized construction on site
Disadvantages:
 There are several limitation and restriction for the industrialized Building System (IBS):
 System is more expensive
 Lack of modular coordination in buildings make its difficult to coordinate the manufacture
of standard sized components for IBS products
 Cost effective with high quantities of modular coordinated design elements
 Water leakage becomes a major problem

ADVANCED ROOF SYSTEM
COATED FIBRE GLASS MENBRANE (PTFE)
Teflon is the registered trade name of the highly useful plastic material polytetrafluoroethylene
(PTFE). PTFE is one of a class of plastics known as fluoropolymers. A polymer is a compound formed
by a chemical reaction which combines particles into groups of repeating large molecules. Many
common synthetic fibers are polymers, such as polyester and nylon. PTFE is the polymerized form
of tetrafluoroethylene. PTFE has many unique properties, which make it valuable in scores of
applications. It has a very high melting point, and is also stable at very low temperatures. It can be
dissolved by nothing but hot fluorine gas or certain molten metals, so it is extremely resistant to
corrosion. (Derived from http://www.madehow.com/Volume-7/Teflon.html)
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES
 Outstanding chemical resistance
 Low coefficient of friction
 High continuous use temperature
(180°C / 360°F)
 Very high oxygen index
DISADVANTAGES
 High cost
 Low strength and stiffness
 Cannot be melt processed
 Poor radiation resistance

METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION
Figure : Erection of Steel Structure Figure: The lower membrane
The erection of the steel structure has always started at a radius with inner column. Following steps
were used. Firstly came the outer columns and the steel and pre-cast R/C elements of the
perimeter beam. The inner column was then erected and temporarily supported. Afterwards the
assembly made by the parts of the radial trusses adjacent to the inner column and lying between
this column and the outer beam was erected. All spatial parts were welded outside the stadium
and were already equipped with the steel arches, which had to carry the upper textile membrane
(Fig.15). At this stage the structure became self stabilized, there was no longer need for the
temporary support of the inner column.

MATERIALITY
PVC coated fiberglass is mainly used shaped tensile fabric structure. Wide range of colours for
printing makes it ideal for banners as PVC coated fiberglass can be folded. This system is suitable
for temporary and stractable structure.

PRECAST REINFORCED CONCRETE STAIRCASE
Every precast concrete stair flight is designed in accordance with BS8110 & to suit the application.
ACP’s precast concrete stairs are available in various configurations from a single stair flight to a
complete precast stair well with landings. Precast concrete landings can be designed as individual
units or can be manufactured as complete precast stair flight and attached landing. Precast
landings can be attached to the top or bottom of the precast stair flight, or supplied with both top
and bottom landings.
METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION
A stairs is a set of steps or flight leading from one floor to another. It is designed to provide easy
and quick access to different floors. The steps of a stair may be constructed as a series of horizontal
open treads with a space between the treads (as in a ladder or a foot-over bridge) or as enclosed
steps with a vertical face between the treads, called a riser. The enclosure or part of the building
containing a stairs is called staircase.

9
ADVANTAGES
 Suitable to construct in high traffic
 High quality gives concrete staircase for long maintenance free life
 Maintenance free service
 Excellent durability
DISADVANTAGES
 Settling – Precast concrete stairs are very heavy
 Repairing damage precast concrete steps such as crack occurred are difficult.
 Foundation and exterior surface damage

CONCLUSION
INDUSTRIALIZED BUILDING SYSTEM (IBS) represent the refabricating construction concept
in Malaysia. It has become a new construction recommendation and highly encourage to practice
in Malaysia in 2015. IBS should be seen as innovation in construction. This innovation has been
promoted worldwide as in industrialized construction. Besides, the classification of IBS should be
expanded to cater the scope of volumetric (modular) and hybrid construction. The more advanced
IBS is in the level of industrialization where need to play more roles and has to be involved in project
life cycle. It is hoped that the generic definition and classification that had been proposed in this
paper will be initiate positive debate into it and receive constructive reaction to enhance our
understanding of IBS.
