Alternative Media - Audiences that Don't Readmedc3260
We all know what mass media is – TV, radio, movies, books and magazines. Alternative media are the techniques used when mass media is not available. Many developing countries have few TVs and spotty electricity. The population may be illiterate. In those cases, smart communicators use alternatives that exist where the population is.
The word "community" is derived from Latin and has been used in the English language since the 14th century. The word community is derived from the Latin communitas (meaning the same), which is in turn derived from communis, which means "common, public, shared by all or many" (encyclopedia).
A community is a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common such as norms, religion, values, or identity.
UNDP Round Table on Indigenous Trade and DevelopmentWayne Dunn
In October 1994 the concept of an international round table on Indigenous production and trade was considered ground-breaking. The UNDP, as part of its preparations for the Decade of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, engaged Wayne Dunn to assist with the development of program and project ideas. The concept of Indigenous trade and partnerships between Indigenous peoples in Canada and those in Latin America, to enable the sharing of development accomplishments and challenges, as well as facilitate direct economic collaboration, emerged as an area of intense interest to Latin American Indigenous Peoples and their leaders. The UNDP Round Table on Indigenous Production and Trade was held at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, DC. It brought together Indigenous Leaders, Indigenous development experts, UNDP and IDB Officials as well as many other stakeholders. The report summarizes the proceedings and findings of the Round Table and contains concrete recommendations for moving forward on the Indigenous Trade and Development Agenda
Fostering independence: How to get out of the way when consumers don’t need usDaniel Greene
The NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct (CPC), Tenet 4, Respect for Consumers, admonishes interpreters to “Facilitate communication access and equality, and support the full interaction and independence of consumers.” Supporting consumer interaction and independence demands that we get out of the way when consumers don’t need us to interpret for them. Various models of interpretation have viewed the interpreter-client relationship in different ways, but do not focus much on the client-client relationship. This workshop will review some well known and lesser-known models of the interpreter-client relationship, examine the “Rescue Triangle,” and introduce a model of interpretation that focuses on the client-client relationship. Participants will have ample time to reflect upon their own professional practice and see how they may be sometimes standing in the way of their clients’ relationships with each other; participants will be guided to identify ways in which they can get out of the way of client-client relationships and foster independence.
