The decline of the Iberian world (Spain and Portugal) was a slow process caused by financial overextension, misguided economic policies, and failure to adapt to new geopolitical challenges. Spain focused on acquiring gold and silver from its colonies in the Americas but lacked economic development at home. It faced revolts in Europe and its navy grew weaker as other powers like France, England, and the Dutch rose. By the late 19th century Spain had lost most of its overseas possessions like Cuba, Philippines, and Puerto Rico.
