This meta-analysis evaluated 5 randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) injections for reducing upper limb spasticity in stroke patients. The analysis found that BTX-A injections significantly reduced muscle tone on the Modified Ashworth Scale and improved scores on the Global Assessment Scale compared to placebo. While BTX-A decreased spasticity, its effect on functional improvement was unclear. The analysis concluded that BTX-A is an effective and safe treatment for reducing post-stroke upper limb spasticity. However, further research is needed to evaluate its long-term effects and impact on quality of life.
