2. Freeform concrete – what is possible today?
We have developed technology that can produce freeform
(reinforced) concrete
• A giant 3D printer prints freeform sand moulds
• Mould elements are stacked like Lego to create larger
structures
• Moulds are filled with concrete through a conventional
casting process
• Reinforcing with long fibres or steel bars is possible
• Sand moulds are removed with pressurised water or air

3. Benefits
• This technology is available today
• Freeform concrete can be applied for complex structures and
ornamental/architectural projects
• High resolution printing (~0.1 mm) enables detailed structures and artwork
• Internal honeycomb/mesh structures enable lighter and energy efficient construction
• Possibility to create reinforced concrete widens scope of application
• All prints can be different, which is applicable for:
• individually scalable objects
• completely asymmetrical constructions
• Product size not limited by printer size
• Sand moulds can be embedded in conventional concrete formwork
• Conventional types of concrete can be applied, which have well‐known properties
and conform to existing standards and certifications

4. Limitations (current or inherent)
• Powder bed technology difficult to apply 'outdoors'
• For solid flat and angular structures, there is limited advantage over current prefab
methods
• Printing a mould requires mould removal and recycling or discharge
