Modern construction formworks:-
1. Aluminium formwork
2. Precast system
3.Modular formwork
4.Tunnel formwork
5.Fiberglass shuttering
Description of each formwork with their advantages and disadvantages
2. FORMWORK
Formwork (shuttering) in
concrete construction is used as
a mould for a structure in which
fresh concrete is poured only to
harden subsequently.
Types of concrete formwork
construction depends on
formwork material and type of
structural element.
Formworks can also be named
based on the type of structural
member construction, such as
slab formwork for use in a slab,
beam formwork, column
formwork for use in beams and
columns, respectively, etc.
3. Requirements of Formwork
Strong enough to
withstand all types
of dead and live
loads.
Rigidly constructed and
efficiently propped and
braced both horizontally
and vertically, to retain
its shape.
The joints in the
formwork should be
tight against leakage
of cement grout.
Construction of formwork
should permit removal of
various parts in desired
sequences without damage to
the concrete.
The material of the
formwork should be
cheap, readily
available, and should
be suitable for reuse.
It should rest on a firm
base and should be as
light as possible.
The material of the
formwork should not
warp or get distorted
when exposed to the
elements.
The formwork should
be set accurately to the
desired line, and levels
should have a plane
surface.
4.
5. Old technique
Done in 2 forms
First the skeleton of
the structure which
comprises of beams
and columns
Foundations,
columns, beam slabs
are constructed using
plywood & timber MS
sheets.
21 days to complete
one slab
Large manpower
required
Material wastage is
more
6. ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
•Initial investment is quite
less
•Large number of manpower
required.
•Mostly used for small
scale structures.
•Slab cycle or 21 days.
•Duration of project will be
long.
•Large number supporting
materials required.
7. MODERN FORMWORK
1. Aluminum formwork
2. Precast system
3. Modular formwork
4. Tunnel formwork
5. Fiberglass formwork
8.
9. Used in construction of
residential units & mass
housing projects
Made up of aluminum
materials molded into
required shapes and
sizes
Used extensively in
various countries.
10 days slab cycle can be
achieved.
Manpower required is quit
minimal
No blocks work required
Shuttering wastages are
very less
10. ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Easy to fix and dismantle Huge capital cost
Handled easily due to its light
weight
Architectural modification are
not possible
Can be re used
The walls and slabs of
structure can be casted
simultaneously.
Monolithic crack free structure
can be built using aluminum
formwork.
Cement mortar plastering not
needed
11.
12. A new method of construction
used worldwide.
Concrete is poured in reusable mold
/shutters in a controlled environment.
Elements are divided into various
members that are casted & cure at
plant and then transported to site for
erection.
It is time saving
required elements can be casted in
advance
Quality is high in precast construction
as it’s built in an ideal environment
with exact measurements.
Durable and stable
Man power is very less compared to
any construction
•Though initial
investments are high
the returns are very
quick.
•Precast construction
gives increased
productivity and
reduces the
mobilization of labors
which saves a huge
amount of cost.
13. Advantages Disadvantages
•Very quick and precise •Comes with huge capital cost
•Saves huge time at site •Architectural modification are
not possible
•Low manpower required •It is being assembled more
number of joints to be closed
•No plastering required
•Minimal strength of concrete can
be achieved within hours with
acceleration.

16. Modular formwork systems are
designed with standardized
panels and component items to
reduce or limit the need for
cutting material on site.
This speeds up the overall
process and therefore
requires less labour on site. They
are also interchangeable with
conventional methods.
Modular Formwork Systems are
generally easy to assemble and
much faster than conventional
Formwork, saving time,
allowing you to pour sooner.
17. Advantages
Does not require
a crane to place
the formwork
Speed of
construction
with unskilled
labour
Fast assembly
comparably
There will be
less
complications
Designed with

18. Modular Formwork can be used to:
1. Concrete housed construction
2. Elliptical columns construction
3. Large columns construction
4. Reinforced concrete pools construction
5. Bunker construction
6. Art stone textured panels
7. Integration
8. Wall construction
9. Lintels and curtain walls construction
10. Foundation plinths construction

20. Fibre glass
shuttering does not
require plastering
They represent in
the area of
shuttering because
of their lightness,
simplicity, durability,
solidity resistance
to temperature
changes
21. Advantages
Smoothest finish

concrete formwork

systems
Unmatched building

Durability
Lower cost
No plastering

Faster project
delivery
Easy customization
and reparability
High re-usability

23. Tunnel Formwork is a steel formwork
It is used during the placing of the
concrete to form the floor and the wall at
the same time.
They can be in different shapes, sizes
and modules.
It allows to cost walls and slakes in an
operation on daily cycle
Construction decorations are reduced
significantly in comparison to the others
Hi tech technologies for steel formwork
makes its strong and durable
It is known as most earthquake
structures
Tower cranes are required for the
erection, removal and carriage of
formworks, scaffolds, and pre-cast
components.
Skilled labours are required
24. Advantages
The project can be
completed in a short time
compared to traditional
construction systems.
Due to accelerated
production, effects of
climatic conditions on
productivity are minimized.
Smooth surfaces for the
walls and slabs are obtained
that can be covered with
wallpaper right after easy
and quick cleaning.
Standard dimensions for the
other components such as
carpet, windows, and doors
can be applicable due to
strict dimensions of load-
bearing system elements.
Due to smooth surfaces,
walls and slabs do not need
any additional finishing such
as plaster.
Early completion of project
provides financial
opportunities such as rental
incomes
