Existential Faith - Three Ironic Heroes of FaithAlister Pate
This was a session in Cafechurch Melbourne (www.cafechurch.org) where we talked about the sort of faith we want - a faith which underpins our lives, even when we don't get the things we prayed for so hard, things which God seems to approve of. The three heroes were Job, Jonah, and St Thomas - all people who had to walk a hard path, but who were fundamentally, existentially open to God

Don't waste your times of suffering. Suffering has the power to change us into our true identity as followers of a suffering Messiah who "learned obedience by the things which he suffered." (Hebrews 5:8) Here are some lessons I have learned about times of suffering.
I consciously and deliberately choose to submit to God by denying my self (self effort), and picking up my cross daily and following Jesus (Jesus’ finished work).
Pastor Brent encourages us and challenges us to surrender our will to the leading of God's Spirit instead of settling for judgments, disconnections, and addictions (living from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil). Slides for a talk given Jan 30, 2021.
Today's SS lesson, "Living As Strangers". We Christians are to be in the world, looking to love and point people to God's grace by our examples and our genuine good deeds. We first must reject falseness (the old life) in our own lives, then we will be free to be Jesus servants by others
The bible says that "man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). What does God see when He peers into your heart? Comparison? Jealousy? Lust? Allow the Lord to purify your heart with His word over this 6-day topical devotional.
Pain always has a purpose in a child of God's life. The devil has a purpose--to weaken our faith. God has a purpose--to cause us to grow so He can promote us on earth and in heaven.

Pastor Brent invites us back to the place where we trust the completeness of God's salvation work in us, and can confidently state that we're fully accepted and loved as God’s favored child! Coming Home To Our True Identity - Charles Razzellrfochler
Charles Razzell contrasts the attitudes and outcomes for two men who encountered God's power: Simon the Sorcerer and Paul the Apostle (Acts chapters 8 & 9). God calls us to experience sonship and values us accordingly, whereas many of us still tend to assess each other for what we do. The best possible outcome is when we know who we are in Christ and live accordingly; Jesus being the Vine, and we the branches. Rather than treat these ideas as confined to the first century, Pastor Brent demonstrates that breaking of bread, praying for one another and taking care of each other's practical needs remain as defining marks of Holy Spirit-inspired communities today. Pastor Brent Lokker explores the authority Jesus endowed on his ekklesia (assembly), when He declared, “whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19) Brent helps us understand the connection between intimacy and authority: our ability to bear much fruit depends on living in union with Jesus (John 15:5). Specific breakthroughs require specific keys, which can only be discerned through prayer and prophetic insight, again highlighting the importance of relationship over formulas and methods. In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Renewed in Grace
Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

2. Keys to Truly Living Life
• God resists the proud but gives
grace to the humble (1 Peter 5:5b,
James 4:6, Prov 3:34)
• Blessed are the “poor” in spirit.
(Matt 5:3)
• After Jesus’ death, His disciples
prayed for boldness (Acts 4:29)
• We give our Father pleasure when
we live boldly instead of fearfully.
(Heb 10:38)
3. But, We’re Tempted to
Misuse and Excuse
• My stiff-necked, hard-driving, steam-
roller ways? Oh, but I’m just being
“Bold in Lord”! I’m making things
happen!
• My avoidance of uncomfortable conflict,
hiding from challenges, putting myself
down? Oh, but I’m just being “humble”.
I’m “staying low”!
4. True Humility
Means We Are Receptive:
• To God’s heart - via impressions,
pictures, thoughts, feelings…
• To new information that may not “fit” with
what we’ve assumed.
• To the possibility we may need to change
what we are doing — in order to stay “in
alignment” with what is true and loving.
5. Humility Like Jesus:
• Jesus resisted being offended when
others put him down, and sought to
hurt his reputation. Jesus didn’t ask
his Father to send angels to prove
His divinity.
• Yet Jesus strongly stood up for the
work of Holy Spirit and Father God.
6. True Humility:
Doesn’t Force It’s Way
• Lives in unforced rhythms of grace.
• Motivated by 1st Cor 13 ways of Love.
• “Love is patient and kind. Love is not
jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It
does not demand its own way. It is not
irritable…” (1 Cor 13:4-5a)
7. “Checking In” with our heart:
What is my true motivation here?
• Fear and Anxiety?
• Love and Trust?
• Afraid of looking silly? Fear of being
misunderstood? Fear of appearing
vulnerable? Anxiety about my needs?
• Connecting with God’s heart? Loving
someone God loves? Confidence that God is
with me. Trusting He cares about my needs?
8. Godly Boldness Comes When
• Our heart is aligned with Jesus’ heart;
when our passion for His Kingdom to
come into a situation is strong.
• We move in the power of the Holy Spirit.
• We feel confident — a confidence that
comes from Father’s confidence in us.
We “know” that we are flowing in an
aspect of our destiny.
10. Godly boldness and confidence often are
“fruit” from what you and God walked
through earlier. He uses all things for
our good — He wastes nothing.
Moses starts his life’s work at 80,
Churchill at age 65, yet David had godly
boldness as a youth (the bear, and the
lion before Goliah).
11. 1 Peter 5:6
Therefore humble yourselves under the
mighty hand of God, that He may exalt
you in due time, 7 casting all your care
upon Him, for He cares for you.
