2. James 1:19-21
19 know this, my beloved brothers: let every
person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow
to anger;
20 for the anger of man does not produce the
righteousness that god requires.
21 therefore put away all filthiness and
rampant wickedness and receive with
meekness the implanted word, which is able
to save your souls (James 1:19-21).
4. • THE COMMAND;
• THE REASON FOR THE COMMAND
• HOW TO DEAL WITH ANGER
5. THE COMMAND:
James is commending more listening, less
talking, and less anger.
“Let every person be quick to hear, slow to
speak, slow to anger.”(V. 19).
“MY BELOVED BROTHERS”
“KNOW THIS.”
“TRUE FAITH IS SHOWN BY YOUR
WORKS”.
6. THE COMMAND:
Faith in Jesus affects
how you listen,
how you talk,
and
how you handle anger.
7. ‘ORGE’: means to seek revenge and
punishment
It can also mean:
1. a sudden, impulsive and outward
anger or
2. a deep seated, slow-burning, internal
anger.
8. • VENTED ANGER – yelling/screaming,
slamming things around, cursing, telling
someone off, attacking verbally, name-calling,
hitting.
• THE SLOW BURN – clamming up,
moodiness, being frustrated, being irritated,
being disgusted, and glaring.
(Stuart Scott, 2009)
9. LIST OF SOME SINS ROOTED IN
ANGER:
• FRUSTRATION – being angry at whatever
or whomever is blocking or hindering our
plans.
• RESENTMENT – internalizing anger by
holding on previous wounds and dwelling on
mistreatment.
• BITTERNESS – a feeling of on-going
animosity because of a real or perceived
10. CONTINUED…
• HOSTILITY – the outward expression of
internal bitterness through demeaning,
hateful speech or actions.
• STRIFE – open conflict or turmoil between
people.
(Jerry bridges, 2007)
11. Warnings about anger and how we
communicate:
• A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a
prudent man overlooks an insult (Prov. 12:16)
• A man of quick temper acts foolishly, and a
man of evil devices is hated (Prov. 14:17)
• Whoever is slow to anger has great
understanding, but he who has a hasty temper
exalts folly.
(Prov. 14:29)
12. CONTINUED…
• A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is
slow to anger quiets contention (Prov. 15:18)
• Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city
(Prov. 16:32)
• Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor
go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and
entangle yourself in a snare (Prov. 22:24-25)
13. It is better to be controlled than to be a
hot-head,
better to be cautious than to be corrosive
with your words,
better to be tolerant than intolerant.
“a hot-tempered man commits many sins.”
(Proverbs 29:22)
14. And do not grieve the holy spirit of god, by
whom you were sealed for the day of
redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath
and anger and clamor and slander be put
away from you, along with all malice. Be
kind to one another, tender-hearted,
forgiving one another, as god in Christ
forgave you
(Eph. 4:30-32).
15. The Reason for the command:
It doesn’t produce the righteousness that
God requires.
17. What about sinful anger?
Sinful anger manifests itself when my desires
and god’s designs clash.
It relates to a choice between God’s
righteousness and my own desires.
“Is being pleasing to God really important to me
or not?”
18. WHEN YOU FEEL ANGRY ASK
YOURSELF THREE QUESTIONS:
1.Why am I angry?
2.What do I want?
3.What do I love?
19. HOW TO DEAL WITH ANGER
1.Recognize that your anger is usually
sinful
2.Confess your sinful anger
3.Learn to trust in the sovereignty of God
4.Choose to love
5.Develop a forgiving heart
20. CONCLUSION
• Can you discuss difficult subjects
without it becoming overly emotional?
• Do you have a list of grievances against
certain people?
• Are you easily angered?
• Are your kids starting to sound like you?
21. Anger is one of the most obvious
expressions of a proud heart. It surfaces
when your desires collide with God’s
designs.
God resists the proud but gives grace to
the humble, and
The anger of man doesn’t produce the
righteousness that God requires.
